: Which frame?
tunaboat 12-12-2008, 04:21 PM I want to build a Formula Four, and I got a quick question. First off im not competing. My plan is to run full width (d60 14bff) I found a free 77 k5 frame, and I also found an 84 4runner frame for $100. With the Formula Four chassis's min wheelbase, I know it will fit on the k5, will it fit on the runner frame?

benttoy 12-12-2008, 04:30 PM Not sure how long the runner frame is. The 4 seater chassie i belive is built to fit a long bed frame
zukjunk 12-12-2008, 05:05 PM you could use the 4runner frame and shorter f-toy chassis and put 4 seats in it.
I'd build an all new frame frame 2x3 or 2x4 tubing...
Brian Ellinger 12-12-2008, 07:01 PM I'd build an all new frame frame 2x3 or 2x4 tubing...
Im with you, just more thinking 1.75 and ~.188 wall would do nicely, and lighter than the box tube.
Yeah, but could a bit more than what he wants to do. the rectangle tube makes for easy spring mounts, steering box etc.
Similar to what we built my brother a few years back http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=553767&highlight=seater+leaf+sprung
tunaboat 12-12-2008, 11:02 PM building my own frame would be sweet, but Im trying to get this build done with the least amount of fab I can, and the least amount of weight.

chvyhs 12-13-2008, 08:34 PM I built by Formula Four on an '81 Toyota long bed frame. Before I was into Toyotas I was a Chevy guy. l like the Toyota Frame because it's boxed right from the factory. If you were to use the Chevy frame you'd probably have to or want to box it. i would suggest going with the Toyota frame. If the Runner frame isn't long enough you could easily extend it to the length needed for the Formula Four. My wheelbase is about 120".

x2 on everything he said.
you could use the 4runner frame and shorter f-toy chassis and put 4 seats in it.
At best, a standard FToy is a 2+2. If you want to seat four adults regularly and comfortably, go for the F-Four with a longbed, xtracab, or lengthened 4Runner frame. The xtracab will have the longest "cab area" of the three--so you can keep your back seats a bit lower without having to raise the chassis.

I would go get your $ back.
waskillywabbit 01-10-2009, 05:39 PM ok, well its all moot at this point. I just bought this today for $700, I know its a little rough, but we'll fix that.
Plan is 60's, 4.3, and dual toy cases. I got the front 60, just need to find a rear 60. I still havent decided what size tire I want to run.

He paid you to take it away right? :shaking:

tunaboat 01-11-2009, 01:05 AM O ye, of little faith
MT4Runner 01-11-2009, 09:00 AM OK, I'll dissent.
If the motor runs, it's worth $500. $200 for the IFS rear axle. You're back to even.
Tubework doesn't look like a complete abortion. Looks like it was a healthy live birth that was left in the weather for oh, about 15 years. Be really critical of the welds and all the rust on that thing. You're going to go through a mile of flapwheels and emory cloth!
I dig the tall boat sides---and it looks like it has a lot of leg room.
Ditch the plastic seats! :nuke:
There's nothing FToy about it, but it has the potential to be a pretty cool "Toy-based" buggy. At least it's a Toy frame and T-cases, right? right? anyone?
i dont get it. what on that thing are you supposed to use?
building the frame and putting the ftoy chassis on it is the easiest part of fab on an ftoy. making it a rolling chassis again is the easiest part. its all the other stuff that takes a ton of fab work and time to make it clean. if you are afraid of making a frame for the ftoy chassis, i would go back to full bodied rigs. you might not know what you are getting into. but what do i know

You're joking about buying that hunk of shit, right? Tell me it was just some abortion you saw on craigslist and thought you'd have some fun with us.
