I can get a Chevy 305 w/ a turbo 350 mated to it for $300 bucks and it only has 77k on it, never been rebuilt...is this a good HP engine?? Or should i wait to get a good 350, im in the south and need High HP and good high reving engines. Obviously an IH 392 is not the best for High rpms and high HP...good for pulling stumps and trees though. But would i be at a loss for going from a 392 to a 305??
thanks

392-305=87
you will loss 87. LOL
sorry i couldn't resist.
how much HP do you want? do you still want a lot of torque?
you can make just about any motor rev if you build it right. i've seen 454's rev to 9,000 rmps. i have friends that are 327 die hards for reving. but i like 350's cause there are a ga-jillion different things you can buy for them and do to them compared to any other small block. just my $0.02.
oh and since you want revs remember....balance balance balance.

A 305 would not be my first choice for a high reving horse power motor, but anything is possible with the right amount of money, no, let me take tat back, you can't polish a turd, compared to anything that says IH on it it may be a high rev-er, but if you want real top end look at 350's, or if you're lucky enough, a 327 or 283 for real buzz happy running.

as far as torque down south, it's only good for when it's hot and dry...it's usually most of the time muddy down here and when it's dry im pretty sure a nicely built 350 will have more than enough torque....I JUST NEED and engine to handle high rpms, as in more than 4,000 which is just about where i don't want to go w/ the 392. and to rebuild an IH motor it aint cheap. i guess i will hold out for the 350...no replacement for displacement, would be a lot better than the 305. It was a good deal though, but there is nothing wrong w/ the 392 so i guess i would just be waisting money if it weren't a 350
thanks

a cheap balancing job will take a 305 well over 4k, maybe 55 or even 6

305: Same stroke as a 350 but smaller bore. Large stroke small bore = torque not hp.
350's are cheap and plentiful, that is the way I would go. I have a 305 in my Blazer and it may just be because of all the smog crap, but it does not like revs, but makes a lot of torque down low. A 327 would be really nice, same bore as a 350, but smaller stroke, but I don't see many of those around here, maybe you would have better luck in GA. :D

I agree with Aggie. Get a shorter stroke for the high rpms. Takes a lot less money to build a high rpm motor that way. Alot of the internals stuff starts falling apart @ a certain velocity so shorter stroke = higher rpms with same equipment. At least thats the way I understand it.

Just a little food for thought:

That is the 350 chevy should have built. A 400 block with 327 crank and LONG rods. :bounce:
