I think yours may take the two piece style, flat one across front, curved one on bottom.
heres some ebay pics for referance.
I may have a used set in the shed....to sell.

Not sure about the first one, looks more like for an auto tranny.

The second is definitely not going to fit his application either.

GM starters don't bolt to the bell housing, they bolt to the block.

old chevy starters do bolt to the bell from 58-69 the 3 bolt nosecone. and that is the only cast iron bell i know of. do you have the bell with the rear motor mount holes? if so this is the one you need http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/63-90...2em118Q2el1247 the other part cyclone listed is for the 235/261 inline 6 chevy

Well I am pretty sure that with the engine and transmission he is using, his starter doesn't bolt to the housing.

Edit: Feel free to correct me if I am wrong.

to solve your problem...

do you just want an aluminum bell housing instead? I have one sitting around that might work better for your application then the old cast iron ones. this one you would bolt the starter to the block not the bell. the shield i dont have, but someone else on P4x4 would more then likely have one.

It would probably be simple enough to fab a shield up out of sheet metal.

Not true when you get up in to medium duty. some bolt to the transmission. Also used in some equipment (fork lifts, ect). Just like the old medium duty blocks have the 7th bell housing hole drilled and tapped. All the 60's up blocks have the place at the top of the bell housing flange on the blocks. It's just not drilled out. First clue on a Pre-LQ/LS SBCS, and pre-Mark V BBC's that it came from a medium duty.

My 72K5 was originally configured with the starter bolting to the bell not the block. I have two shields on my SM465, flat one across the back that goes around the bolt pattern for the starter hole and a half moon shaped one that shields the cluth assy.

my 72 Jimmy also has the starter on the bellhousing. Or it did. I went to a gear reduction mini starter. Great swap. I would suggest going to GM or a google serarch for vendors like Victoria British or Classic Industries.
