Well first question. Im kinda new to the 4wheeling scene and I knew the axle I have under my truck is way to small. I currently have a dana 44 with 44's on it. I broke my first axle last night with some very light wheeling. Do you guys usually break balljoints when you break and axle at the u joint area. I broke my inner and outter axle and broke both balljoints leaving me in a bad position out on the trails. Next questiuon is what all did dana 60's come in and can you get a 6 lug dana 60 with drivers side pumpkin. Then the next question what do I need to swap to a dana 60 and will a dana 60 be enough for 44's. Thanks in advance, sorry for the newb questions:(

There is a ton of info on this stuff, search for it. Chevy 60's are passenger diff...and spring perches are same..they bolt right in, just usually have to crossover.

Just a question of $$$$. 60 should hold up way better. Everything can break. :homer:

I was hoping to buy a cheap junkyard axle and build it up. Its gonna be a budget axle, maybe no more than $1200 if it can be done.

The junkyard I go to has a standard axle price, around 90$ for any type of axle.. 10bolt front end to a d60...only 90$. I'm praying to find a 60 when im there one day.

A dana 60 swap is a direct bolt in swap.

But with big enough tires, 60s also can break.

Lemme guess, if you have a Dana 44 in the front, you have a 12 bolt in the rear? Might as well find a complete donor truck with a 14 bolt in the rear as long as you are searching for a Dana 60.

No I have a dana 60 out back. The guy built the truck to never see off road. It didnt even have gears or anything in the 44 up front nor did it have a high angle DS made for it. So im hoping to slowly change that. So far I have got 4x4 functioning so thats a decent start, lol.

I knew what I was in for. A dana 44 starts getting pretty weak with anything more than about 38's right. I was hoping it would handle what I thought was light wheeling till after taxes. I didnt make it that far, first time out I destroyed it.

I watched my buddy snap a Dana 44 shaft (the inner shaft no less) with 35 inch Boggers in soft dirt.

No kidding, I'll buy all the D60's I can get for that price.

What? Where is this yard at?

They are everywhere (well, everywhere there is a Pick-n-Pull, or variant thereof). My local PnP sells front D60's for $75. Only issue is that VERY few 1-tons wind up there. So, yes, if you pray long and hard, slaughter some sacrificial lambs, join a monastery, you MIGHT just luck out and find one.

So either start praying or stop being a dumbass...

As far as finding a D60 and building it for around $1200, it is possible. Just keep your eyes peeled for a good deal. I just picked up a D60 front and D70 rear for $450 with a good front driveshaft too. After I sell the D70 and the 6 tires and wheels I got with the axles, I'll have a pretty cheap front D60. Yeah it needs a little work but I can deal with that. If you want a 6 lug front D60 it is possible but it just cost more to convert it. I believe solid axle sells the kit. Good luck and Welcome to Pirate!:flipoff2:

I bought a m1008 (1 ton chevy pickup ) off of www.govliquidation.com for a little over a grand. pulled the 60 out and sold the rest.. the 60 wound up costing me about $400. It came with 4:56 gears. It will be stronger than your 44 ever thought of. But I also recomend chromo 35 spline shafts, a detroit, some drive flanges and 1410 pinion yoke.

This is probably a real ignorant question but do you guys think it would be possible to build a dana 44 to be near the strength of a stock dana 60

don't waist your time or money.if you want to keep your d44 drop down to 35" tires

For the cost spent building a 44 to be "bullet proof", you could have purchased a Dana 60 that stock, will still be stronger than a built to-the-teeth 44.

The best way to build a strong D44 is put it under a 1000 lbs truck. :grinpimp:
