: Project Peanut Butter Jelly
Lucky_Thirteen 12-14-2008, 10:42 PM Bought this thing when I was 18. I didn't know any better :homer:
78 f150, 460/np435, built 9" and dana 44, 42s, super stiff suspension, typical mall crawler bolt ons that broke everytime I tried driving through a puddle:puke:
Decided I'm not gonna finish the truggy anytime soon, so I'm making this pig somewhat wheelable after sitting for over a year and a half with broken parts.
Dana 60 front, 14bolt rear, 5.38 gears, 44's, 4link front, deavers rear, etc. I plan on lowering it from 12 inches of lift (10 suspension, 2 body) to 4-5 inches of lift. Will be getting rid of all the mall crawler bolt-ons along the way also.
Just finished swaping in the deavers, moved them back a couple inches and moved them up so the hanger doesn't hang below the frame. Should be around 4-5" lift when done

http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h51/79_elcamino_ss/P1010241.jpg
Back on it's own weight. Need to move the shackle back aways. These deavers flattened a lot more then I expected they would. Looks like I got some trimming to do too
http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h51/79_elcamino_ss/P1010245.jpg
Will start the rear bumper and tin work (led tail lights, bob and pie cut the bed, fender cut) while I gather up the parts for the front end
zachis4wheeling 12-14-2008, 11:39 PM You wanna sell that bumper? Holy shit that things big as fawk, 80's style...but it actually looks unbelievably good.....it's like one of those bumpers that would tempt the shit out of me when I was stuck in traffic.
Truck actually looks remarkably clean.
Yea, for yur trimmin, I'd start with the reveal on the opening, where the flat side of the bed starts to flare out as a guide and not go too much further than that if you can help it. Too big of tire openings when you cut the fenduhs = the gay......not gonna lie
But the rest looks pretty sick. Like I said, I'd pimp the shit out of that bumper....even if it does hurt the approach a little bit. You'll be able to plow right through whatevers in front of you.
BTW.....what's keepin the truck from tipping side to side? And why arn't yur tires chocked both ways? Just lookin out for you boss.
WHITE RHINO 12-14-2008, 11:40 PM dude do you have money trees on your property or what hahaha

Yes, I am selling the bumper actually. You can drive through the side of a tank with that thing.
I definitely plan on keeping the fender openings clean
The stands are welded to the frame. It's sitting on a pretty good slope so I wasn't worried about chocking the front of the tires. Hopefully I'll get it inside the shop where it's somewhat warm tomorrow for the tin work
dude do you have money trees on your property or what hahaha
Nah, I'd actually finish shit if I had money trees lol
GMCTruxrule 12-15-2008, 12:09 AM Where did you get that diff cover for the 14 bolt at?
cowboyup21 12-15-2008, 05:51 AM looks like a pretty sweet build. If I was closer I would buy the bumper off ya, would go good on my 79 F250. What are you doing with the D44/9" ?
1sicbronconut 12-15-2008, 07:48 AM Where did you get that diff cover for the 14 bolt at?
Looks like the one Ballistic sells, on sale right now also!! http://www.ballisticfabrication.com/14-Bolt-Diff-Cover_p_122-1591.html

USMCNetzel21 12-15-2008, 09:31 AM So what are your plans for the truck use wise, since you are being a fool and taking all the mall crawler stuff off. :D
Loki89t 12-15-2008, 02:22 PM Looks like a good start. Round headlights are the best :grinpimp:

It actually is just a pile of scrap steel, with the ballistic fab skull welded on

Yeah I can't imagine what shipping would be on that thing to get it to ya, it's heavy. The rear 9" is broke and being sold as a housing. The dana 44 will be up for sale when it's pulled
So what are your plans for the truck use wise, since you are being a fool and taking all the mall crawler stuff off. :D
I'm going to step up to college campuses, more of a select group of people :flipoff2:

You too scared to cut some sheet metal? :stirthepot:
Ford460 12-16-2008, 08:01 AM Nice build!!!! Thants one clean truck
What are you planning on doing with the front end suspension? Are you going to change it over to leaf springs or leave the coils? Im just starting on almost an indentical project except mines a stepside. Also anxious to see how your fenders turn out cuz im also gonna be cutting mine a lil so i can run the 44s and keep the center of gravity as low as possible
Awesome build though!!

either way, the led set up is looking right. Along with the rest of the build so far. I'm sure we all wont be disappointed.
Loki89t 12-22-2008, 06:36 PM Thank you for bobbing your bed, now I know what I'm doing to my truck. Wasn't sure how it would look, but it looks good :smokin:
How much did you bob it?
travisford83 12-22-2008, 08:18 PM Hurry up and finish this up so you can wrap up the yota! As always, great looking work!
Lucky_Thirteen 12-22-2008, 10:39 PM are those the tires from the yota?
Yup. I think I'm gonna run the 42's on the yota. I don't want to grind the 60 calipers down for a 15" wheel on a street drivin hooptie
I doubt it, two sets of 42's on wheels are DIRT CHEAP these days.

8 inches. Stretched the fender opening 7 inches and raised it up two. You should be able to take 2-3 more inches out if your springs are still in the stock location
Hurry up and finish this up so you can wrap up the yota! As always, great looking work!
haha yeah no joke. It's not even close to done and I'm planning on how I'm going to build my next yota  I have ADHD when it comes to projects

Not much done on this at all. Finished the fuel line up and got if running again. Got really sick about a month ago and it ended up being a form of non hodgkins luphoma cancer. I'm currently typing this out from the hospital bed. They cut out some of the bigger chunks and I went through my first chemo. Prognosis looks really good they say. Hopefully I'll be at home and well enough to keep goin on the tin by next week but I have chemo every two weeks for a few months so it will probably be really slow
Nor Cal Wheelin 03-04-2009, 10:24 PM Fawk dude, that sucks... best wishes.

Lucky_Thirteen 03-09-2009, 02:22 PM Thanks for the replies guys. Anything helps. Got to come home on Saturday finally, man is it nice to be out of that place. I just need to work on eating and building back my strength as I'm super weak. I lost almost 30 pounds in a month (I'm 6'3" and weighed 138lbs the day I left). A lot of friends have been stoppin by which helps keep the spirits up. It just sucks having turned 21 in December, I'm supposed to be living like I'm never gonna die, not actually almost be dying:(. Oh well, shit happens, prognosis still looks good as it's a very curable form of cancer and it was caught before it advanced too far. Hopefully I'll get this pig together for some summer wheeling :smokin:

Don't post much, but felt compelled.
Cancer sucks. I've lost 3 grandparents to it, and have a couple friends who've dealt with it.
Good luck, and I too look forward to seeing updates here, as then I know you're doing better.
Best wishes.

fordxranger 05-01-2009, 04:41 AM are you parting this out now? I saw an ad on craigslist with the front axle for sale with the picture of it without the rear end out in the snow.

Like the first picture in the build thread :flipoff2:
That picture was when I was doing the rear spring/axle swap
I'm just selling what I don't want, which happens to be most the truck.

Oh yeah I'm actually doing really good. Monday will be my 5th of 8 chemos, and I'll get wendsdays ct scan results. Definitely getting my energy and strenth back. Loaded up the bikes and headed out to the dunes last weekend to do some dirtbike riding. Definitely can't ride like before but progress is progress considering I barely had the strength to even walk when I got home.
I had a small bout with pnuemonia, but it was caught right away and dealed with. Really, other than having to remember to sunscreen my head I'm doing pretty awesome :grinpimp:
PhantomEB 05-02-2009, 06:32 PM I love the idea for the LED's, may use it for the EB now.

Look what's been dug back up. Been collecting parts for a while now, it's time to jump on this thing. Decided I wanted 4ws, so I sold the rocks that I had and picked up a pair of steer axles. Mohawked them, welded the thirds, flipped the hubs, and flipped one of the center sections. Picked up a set of 46's and beadlocks, Jeds 203-205 doubler and triple shifters, Patooye's pinion brake kits, FOA 4" air bumps, FOA coilovers, all the stuff to link it, and a whole bunch of 1 3/4 dom.
Decided the stock frame was garbage, so it's going off to scrap. Started bending up the new frame yesterday.

PhantomEB 01-04-2011, 07:06 PM Gorgeous truck, dont sell unless you have to or you think you can get a decent penny for it. I am sure if you dont have to sell or cant get a decent penny for it, theres got to be somewhere you can get friends to leave it.

Nothing. It's torn down to a bare chassis and is sitting on a pallet up in the racks. It's either going to be sold or finished when the Orange yota is too beat to keep rebuilding
meh, she's close to ready to teardown and finish, next one for sure
i hope it gave you a new perspective and stregnth, my mom wasn't so lucky, keep your friends and family close, that is what matters most... rock on
It definitely changes your perspective. I was about this >< close to not being here(I spent three days in a coma). Live life, have fun, keep your family and friends close, you never know which day will be your last.
sweet looking build man, but i must say i know people that would have killed to have that bed before you chopped it up...those things are worth a small fortune in good shape on the east coast
Meh, the skins are good, the front of the floor and front wall were rotted.
Gorgeous truck, dont sell unless you have to or you think you can get a decent penny for it. I am sure if you dont have to sell or cant get a decent penny for it, theres got to be somewhere you can get friends to leave it.
Just knowin you have your truck waiting for you when you can work on it once again, is quite the inspiration!
It was a nice truck at one time
well its about time --
:flipoff2:
after beating on my unfinished rig for 4 years and changing it 20 times, i wish i would have made a full tube chassie. glad to hear you are doing well and working on a ford, and not a toy :flipoff2:
and like weave i have already started collecting for the next one, and mines not done :D
:laughing::laughing:
Working with a stock frame sucks. My build is going to be caught up to yours pretty soon :flipoff2::stirthepot:
f250rollinon37s 01-05-2011, 08:46 PM so you are going to let is sit for 4 years too ? :(:flipoff2:
soon my friends soon ---
Lucky_Thirteen 01-05-2011, 08:50 PM Probably
Edit: I put the cab over the chassis today, and stared at it for about an hour

I know, I was just telling the girlfriend a couple days about how ironic it was. What's the chances that a guy that buys my old axles off of craigslist would post a build thread on pirate and be building almost the same truck as me  Crazy
Lookin good more updates!
Thanks man, I should have a good amount of the cage done this weekend.

hey what hydro steering you guna use?
I have the PSC 3x9 rams, you can see one of the rams sitting on the bench in some of the pics. Not sure what I'm going to run for a pump and orbital, but most likely PSC also. For the rear I'm going to run an electric over hydro pump.
Got the A and B pillars in it tonight. Sorry for all the shitty cell pics, I'll use the real camera one of these days :flipoff2:

Lucky_Thirteen 01-24-2011, 10:58 PM Thanks guys. Got a little bit done this weekend. Tweeked the drivetrain around a little bit, ended getting a couple more inches of up travel out of it. Going to start mounting the engine, tranny, and transfer cases tomorrow. I think I'm going to try and tuck the front steering ram on the back of the axle, things are going to be tight

Lucky_Thirteen 01-26-2011, 12:23 AM Truck all ready has a pretty fresh centerforce clutch, flywheel, and ARP bolts on it. Otherwise I'd probably come up with something to trade ya
CTeunuch 01-27-2011, 04:56 PM Glad to hear you're doing better. I'd forgotten about this build it had been so long, but the new updates are boner inspiring to say the least. Are you planning to keep the dovenose looking somewhat stock?

The dove nose is going to have to be pretty narrow for tire clearance. It'll still have a grill and headlight buckets. So it depends on what your idea of somewhat stock looking is:laughing:
5BrothersFabrication 01-28-2011, 04:07 PM I absolutely love the truck. I'm going to do the same thing with my '78 Bronco buggy. Going to use a '77 extended cab F-1 and narrow the piss out of it. I took 21" out of the center of the cage front to rear, guessing the same will come out of the body. Can't wait to see her finished, keep it up brother!:mr-t:

Not at all. I work in spurts, then let it sit for a while:flipoff2:
Nothing too hard about narrowing them, just take your time measuring and cutting. A sloppy cut will make your life miserable

I'm going to run a two piece driveshaft to get it around the clutchfork, bellhousing and block. I thought about setting the engine sideways or offsetting it a little. But I pretty much have to run a two-piece shaft for a couple of reasons, so I'll just space it out far enough to clear.

mavereq 03-16-2011, 09:20 AM any updates on this?
Lucky_Thirteen 03-16-2011, 10:53 PM Not really. Been working on my Toyota, as it needed some maintenance and a couple upgrades. Also getting the bikes ready for a dune trip.
I did fab up some lower link brackets, and pulled the front axle to finish weld all the tabs, and set up the steering. Tabs are a mix of 3/16 and 1/8, again all cut with a torch. Who wants to donate a torchmate table to me?

Lucky_Thirteen 03-25-2011, 07:43 PM Waiting on parts and dry weather to work on the Yota, so I did a little work on this thing today. Got the ram tacked in place, and got a plan together for the knuckles. Wasn't able to fit the ram behind the axle like I wanted too, just wasn't going to happen. Knuckles are going to take a while, should have updates next week sometime.

Just some 3/16 plate. Tig'd the first pass, then blended it with the mig. Hopefully someone will come out with a nice replacement knuckle sometime.

You plan to pie cut the cowl in to make the fenders flow better?
I was planning on cutting the fenders in line with the cowl. However your idea would look much cleaner, I think I'll have to go this route. Thanks for the idea :smokin:

I can see the look on the officers face now, and the mile long ticket that would ensue.
Cut apart some old driveshafts this weekend. This is the easiest way I have found to do this.
Grind the weld down
http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h51/79_elcamino_ss/666.jpg
Make two cuts, opposite sides
http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h51/79_elcamino_ss/663.jpg
Cut around the weld, then hammer a chisel into the cuts you made
http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h51/79_elcamino_ss/660.jpg
You'll be left with a pile of drive shaft parts
