..Shot this pic at Cedar!..What is it and how does it work??

Looks to me like it lets the spring twist, sorta like part of a revolver shackle except without unfolding.

looks like a cylinder that stretches the spring out, thus bringing up that side of the axle, kinda cool idea if it works, either that or it's a shock used instead of a shackle, even cooler idea did you get any pics of the front of the spring?
hmmm thanks I love that type of ingenuity

i stared at this myself for quite a while, but if you see it work, it is quite impressive, it is a sort of shock....when the spring get compresion flex it sux in, when it get droop flex, it will suck out, you really have to just see it perform:rolleyes:

If that's the case I think it would work the other way around. On compression the "shock" would extend and when drooping the shock would compress. Leaf springs get longer when they are compressed and shorter when they are flexed.

There doesn't appear to be any shocks on the front susp either???

Thats the coolest way to eliminate a shackle I've seen in a long time. It doesn't even need to be a shock, just a sleave with a tube that slides in and out as the spring moves and it can rotate with the spring twist. I like it! I might use it.

More clearance that a shackle and something original I like it don't need it but I like it

I think it's just a normal oil filter, filtering the oil like oil filters do.

i had already figured out how to make somthing simlar

I built a set up like that last year. not a shackle just a slide tube and it was cool but I haven't had time to redo one on anything w/ a bearing setup or something that lasts longer. the tubes got dry fast and bound. something w/ a normal thick shock or air setup would be cool. that setup looks good. not sure if it's air oil or air over oil.

Number 26 in the picture would be Curt Hilderbrand. Isn’t he the one who made revolvers?

What keeps the shock's shaft from being bent?

Look how small the shock body is, and with the post on one end......Almost looks like they made it from a steering stabilizer??

Pretty cool way to get rid of the shackles!!!

What postion was the front axle in in this pic? If at rest, wouldn't the shock/stabilizer part need to be partially open (shaft halfway in and halway out)?

It would need to have travel in both directions so if you lifted that side of the jeep it would be able to compress, or do you just live with the amount of drop you would naturally get and worry only about the compression?

How does it work?

Much like the Revolvers.

Curt invents it, develops it, then licenses it to a major manufacturer for production.

This fella has tapped into the best part of the business, IMHO -- all the fun of prototyping and development, with none of the hassles of production or customer support.

Cool! FWIW, these are on his competition Jeep, the green one he had in Moab for EJS.

What father wouldn't want to take his son for a week of 'wheeling in Moab? 4x4Wire's Cherokee Editor Berkeley Johnston sprung his son out of the third grade for a week during Easter Jeep Safari 2002. The condition of this freedom was to write about the most interesting person he met that week... Curt Hildebrand is that man.

Taking pictures was conditional on us NOT showing the shackle doo-hickey, since negotiations were in progress for production rights. Nobody has noticed the obvious thing yet -- this design replaces the shackle AND the shock.

Rockstomper AKA Scott had something similar on the rear of his old white toy. Does anyone remember what I'm talking about?

randii

Scott's setup was different -- it was a shackle replacement, but not a shock replacement... I've seen that setup work on roundy-round cars, but without some sort of wiper seal, dunno about in the dirt...

As mentioned, It's Curt's he 's developing it, playing with valving etc. The male part has girth and should work well. It's pretty simple. im not sure how effective it is at dampening at that location vs the up and down movement at the axle- I guess it depends on the ratio of vertical compression vs change in spring length.

Give me coils and links so you can clean up approach and departure angles.
