Sorry not the usual tool thread (more of a Chit chat thread?) but I am wondering how much of you here have seen prices for used tools and machinery going down recently? If so how much?
I have been seeing a lot more Craigslist link threads for tool deals here recently which has prompted me to ask these questions. It's unfortunate sign of the times I guess.
I am in traditionally top dollar market (even this time of the year) for used tools probably because lack of turnover from our very limited manufacturing industry where I live. But even here I have noticed prices drop significantly. This past weekend I scored a 35 ton Hydraulic Punch Press and a Jet horizontal 7"x12" horizontal bandsaw for less then $400 total. Usually I would be looking at about $1500 or more for the same.

With the economy, I too have been sort of expecting people to be "liquidating" tools and other things. Haven't seen much of it, though. About the same amount of stuff on CL and no blowout deals.
Unless they are taking the stuff straight to the scrapyard...

I haven't noticed that trend at all on Chicago craigslist. I look at the tools for sale ads daily, and if anything, I see more ads every day that I have to shake my head at and say "WTF are you thinking with your prices?"

I guess it depends on what your looking for. I have bought probably 10 tools off of craigslist in the past couple of years, at least 8 of them were shockingly cheap from guys who didn't really know what they were worth. There is a guy on chicago CL today selling a $100 bosch sidewinder circ saw for 200 so it works both ways.
There are 3x's more tools for sale on cl than there were a couple of years ago. I agree that prices are down and selection is up overall

I sent this idiot an email telling him he's nuts. Not the first time I've done that in response to a CL ad either :D

I look at tools almost everyday on all the local cl's. Selection is up, I think just from more people finding out about it, the local paper trading post if a thin joke now. I've seen some deals, but not near as many as I would have though with the economy being "in the shitter". Most of the deals i've found are just from people not knowing what they have, not desparation to sell.
I've also seen ALOT of overpriced BS lately. Several pos welders and aircompressors that seller claims to have paid 2-3 times more than what a new one cost, then selling them same as new. Lots of power tools for the same or more as new. Basicly it's just like a pawn shop.

Thanks for the replies so far.
The one thing I am starting to notice on my local CL is a lot more machinery for sale like CNC machinery and mills. A year ago you couldn't find a any Vertical mill or even a mill drill to save your life. Now I can find a Bridgeport almost every other day, but the prices are a little crazy/high.

Last summer our CL was full of lathes and mills. I was working with a bunch of guys from LA and New Mexico and they took 4 mills and 3 lathes back with them. I am seeing less of them now than during the summer and I think the prices seem to be a few hundred more. They would have takin back more but they didn't have room
Anyone want a welder http://chicago.craigslist.org/sox/tls/959536337.html
Im guessing the ad won't last long, real nice miller spoolmate200 with tank 375

Craiglist in my area is picking up in general, but it never was that big, I think it is more people discovering it.
Pawn shops around here are full, you can pick up a set of construction tools and some mechanics tools dirt cheap due to the extra supply.

I have seen the number of listings growing and the prices are at one extreme or the other. I have seen people asking $150 for a 7" angle grinder that is worn out and been beat to death, while I picked up a miller mig welder with tank for about $50 more than the tank alone would have cost me.

I just picked up a nice framing nailer for $50. Seems like a good deal to me? I've been buying used machine tool stuff and I don't see the prices going down at all right now. I think once GM bites the dust we'll see truly cheap machine tools and uber deflation.
