Pretty easy job, if you have the right tools, which I don't. I need some 1/2" hex stock machined.
It's quite simple. I'll buy a 6" chunk of the .5" hex stock and have it shipped to you. Cut the stock in half, so there's roughly 2 - 3" pieces (length not critical).
on one end of each piece, machine a .3" square drive that's .5" long. that's it. Any takers? I'm not asking for a freebie, I'm willing to pay for it.
Edit: Steel.

Check out Kraus Machine in Colwich. They are easy to work with and can get stuff done really quickly. Just a couple old guys in a shop up there. They machined the links for the Rockwild buggy.
I don't have the number right here, but if you need it let me know.

$50 set up. (I need that damn $40 collet!)
$10 per item, Max 5 items.
What I am thinking.... 12L14 is easy to machine.
What Nissan Crawer has.... some oddball stainless steel that a grinder won't touch! (A friend dropped off a piece of steel one time, oh my, turned out to be some alloy that wouldn't even spark when hit with the grinder. Carbide tools just skipped along it.... damn! Nice paper weight).

Yeah, you really need to say what "kind of steel" you have. If it's plain old mild steel, it'd be easy for anyone with a small mill to work on. If it's some weird uber-hard material, well, it could be setting someone up to break cutters and have an overall bad day. ;)

Shit, sounds like the kind of thing I used to make with a hacksaw and a grinder.

4140/4142.
Mcmaster #6607K222 I can't get the page to link. No can do on the hacksaw/grinder, I want it to look and work better than that.

Let sniper do it, let sniper do it....
When I see 4140 I tend to run and hide.
I'd love to get a heat treat oven (need to make one) and been after that a surface grinder, but too many other things to get done! :flipoff2:

are you making some kind of adapter for socket set/special tool for a job at work? are you going to heat treat it after the machine work or leave it in the condition it is in? where the transition is between the hex and the square is can it have 90 degree corner or do you need a radius in the corner? ( preferred method for maximum strength and less likely to have problems with cracking if you heat treat it) if square corners are allowed i will make them for you for free-you have to pay shipping both directions though. merry christmass:)

I'll get rough tolerances for you guys, it's nothing to precise. No heat treat needed, it won't be used that much, no radiusing needed, it's only going to see 200"lbs of force at most.
I'll get back to you guys.

Mail it to 45252 and back and I'll do it for free.
Square drive in any type of orientation to the hex profile?

4140 is not that hard to machine. I turn and grind lots of 4140 and 4340 heat treated to RC50. Cutting threads in RC50 is fun. 4005 grade Sandik CNMG's eat it like candy.

Why ship it out when you have someone local? I don't work for them or anything, but they have treated me right before.
