View Full Version : Used oil in a barrel stove?

I just ordered one of the Vogelzang barrel stove kits from Northern. I intend to use wood as the primary fuel in my shop but would like to burn my used oil also if I can. It adds up and taking it in to work for disposal can be a PITA.
I thought I would just gravity feed from a bucket with a ball valve to adjust flow. I would feed through some copper tubing and wrap it around the flue a couple times to preheat the oil. Then just drip onto a pan in the barrel.
Anybody else doing this?
Whats your setup?

i used to just soak firewood in a barrel of used oil, and then burn it in the stove at our old shop:shaking:

fuck carbon footprints

We tried numerous times at my old shop to have one furnace burn both. We couldn't get good results. Just burning oil though worked great. Creates dark smoke, kinda stinks. Have plenty of blower fans to assist in forcing air into the fire. Definitely pre-heat oil it's a must. Could even implement a burn pan. Screw Gore and his carbon credits. :flipoff2:

We burn both in ours, wood to get things started and oil from a barrel on a stand with a ball valve as you said. Works great IMO.

I use a cast iron pot 6" tall 12 wide. I stood a 5/8 bolt up in the middle, as a mast fot the paper towel to drape across to act like a wick... About 2" above level. It takes a while to get going, 10 min. Their is not much control over the burn rate. It gets hotter as the oil level drops. If your pot breaks, it could be bad.

There was a good online article from Mother Earth News (greenies buring WVO in the late 70's! :flipoff2:) on making a waste oil boiler inside a discarded water heater tank.

They wrapped copper tubing around the stack to preheat.

The burner pan was a 6" or 8" cast iron skillet full of kitty litter to act as a wick. They started it with wood or an oily rag, IIRC. Once that heated up, there was a secondary "catalytic" burner that was a 4" or 6" disc of 1/4" plate that the oil dripped onto, which vaporized the oil before it burned so it burned hotter and cleaner.

Or maybe I just imagined it!?!

I wasn't imagining it!!

The burner is a little more involved than a plate, but do-able with shop fab tools:
