: Dry filter for a Vortec, what are my choices?
Lil'John 12-16-2008, 03:32 PM Title mostly states it.
More info though: 2004 6.0L Vortec[LQ4] going into Toyota Cruiser. Engine bay width is too narrow to fit stock box. Smog is not an issue.
I do not want to run one of the many oil based air filter(K&N or the like) due to widespread MAF issues with them.
Plumbing to the filter I can figure out. Just no ideas on what my choices for filters are.
What are my choices?
And just to throw a token picture up:flipoff2:
spidr 12-16-2008, 03:38 PM Buddy of mine has the AEM one on his Vortec 4.3 and it's been treating him well.
jeepfool 12-16-2008, 04:30 PM I like.....I am putting a 04 6.0 in my TJ. I may be wrong, but I remember reading something about them not having a MAF sensor...
BTW, what radiator is that?
Bo185 12-16-2008, 04:36 PM Just pick anyone on E-bay one you want! I long ago abandaned K&N's as well!
Why no E-fan?????
toastyyosty 12-16-2008, 08:37 PM The only reason people had problems with the K&N filters and MAF is that when people would clean them they would put to much oil on them and that would cause the oil to get sucked up into the sensor and cause a clog it... but i still can understand how you'd want to do a dry filter... just though i'd throw that out there. :D

Yup, that is the main issue I've heard and what caused it. But I've also heard very questionable filter ability of them.

No electric fan because I could fit the mechanical in with no problems.
Plus, I've seen/heard more cooling issues related to electric fans than with mechanical fans. Most electric fans have a CFM issue and those that don't either cost a huge amount of money or end up being a "patched together" junkyard solution. The later not being appropriate for this project.
USMCNetzel21 12-17-2008, 05:09 AM Two I have read about are the AEM and AFE. I haven't ever had any experience with AFE and never had any problems with AEM. I've heard a lot of good things about the AEM.
HAPPYJOHN 12-17-2008, 06:51 AM x2 on AEM.
Lil'John 12-17-2008, 07:20 AM BTW, what radiator is that?
The radiator is a summit radiator P#SUM-381325.
However, in my case, it isn't going to work. Both the inlet and outlet on the Vortec point to the passenger side. In the stock configuration, the upper radiator hose kind of snakes over the fan to the outlet on the driveside. In my case, I don't have the hood clearance to do that.
To fix that issue, I'm going to use a Griffin 1-28202-X:
http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=GRI-1-28202-X&N=700+115&autoview=sku
This radiator has both outlets on the passenger side. Bad news is no tranny cooler:(
Fugging double buying everything I prebought so far with this drivetrain:shaking::shaking:
6.2Blazer 12-17-2008, 09:58 AM I've been running a drop-in replacement K&N in my '03 2500HD with the 6.0L for 3-4 years and probably 50-60,000 miles with no issues. This fall when I changed the oil I did pull out the MAF and cleaned it, but there was no noticable issue before cleaning it and I did not notice any difference once cleaning it.
I find the so-called tests on the filter ability of the K&N somewhat questionable (I do all types of automotive testing for a living so have some knowledge on this topic). There are lots of questions that arise from these "tests" and there are never multiple samples to prove the repeatability. In any case, the results are sensationalized.....sure, the K&N may have the least filtering ability but you are talking about only a few percentage points less.

Goood info.
What alot of guys here in the desert have found is that the very very fine dust can get through the K&N element. To remedy this, an outer wear cover is slipped over and seems to work fine. Another reason why people have problems in dusty areas with K&N filters is because they use some sort of forced air to dry the filter after cleaning, like an air compressor. This whill blow tiny holes in the filter (especially older ones) that allow dust particles in.
As for the oil issue, like stated LOTS of people over oil their filter and it causes the MAF to get dirty and trip an SES/CEL light. Combine this with the issue of people drying the filter incorrectly like I said above and it compounds the problem.
Ive run K&N filters in I dont know how many vehicles. From a little rice rocket when I was 17, to my other LS1 powered sports cars, to my diesel trucks, to my current buggy and Ive never had an issue with excessive dust or MAF issues from oil.

In 2005 GM yet E-fan in the half tons. They run the 34'' rad. and e-fans no problems. So you can use the stock GM fan from a truck if its to wide the LS1 fan out of an F-body is 28'' BTW.
But the mech will work you really need a shroud for the mech. fan through.
EDIT: More pictures please!!!!!
USMCNetzel21 12-18-2008, 04:36 AM And I know this is stupid to post this but they HAVE to be cleaned...at my job I've seen so many people with the K&N filters on their trucks/cars that have never once cleaned them. Then they try and blame K&N for their problems. :shaking:

Good point. Yes, they can get too dirty and too restrictive. Another important aspect is that the K&N relies on the oil for the filtering. If you don't clean and re-oil it periodically the filter becomes dry and loses much of its filtering ability.
Lil'John 12-18-2008, 02:27 PM EDIT: More pictures please!!!!!
I've got a few pictures(roughly 400) :emb:
Quick stats: 1971 FJ55 with 6.0L Vortec(LQ4), NV4500, NP203, and Cruiser tcase. Dana 60s with ARBs narrowed to 60" with 17" rims and unknown tires(picture shown is 35" procomp rollers)
I just picked up a good picture of the engine bay before getting the harness loomed yesterday. Still have like 5 wires to run for chassis related stuff(air and lights) The ECM harness runs under the throttle body.
Second picture shows the pig when I got it. Bone stock 71.:homer:
Third picture shows the front bumper ready for the 8274 winch along with a peak of the front Dana60:mr-t: Also setup with tow bar mounts along with removable ends:smokin:
Fourth picture shows the cut rockers. They are missing a coat of Herculiner.
Last picture shows the original plan. I wanted stock axles, sprung under, with 31s. The height of the Vortec plus the low hood height on the pig forced a spring over:shaking:
I'm hoping to fire it up just after the first of the year:mr-t:
Most of the work has been done by Don of FCFab(all the steel work) and Georg of Valley Hybrids(electrical help) down in Stockton.
Bo185 12-18-2008, 03:52 PM Needs hydroboost and E-fans!:flipoff2:
Looks good man!:grinpimp:
