when ever my motor gets to normal operating temp and i go to restart the jeep the starter just bogs and almost doesnt start. i replaced my battery with an optima cause it kept dying when the starter wouldnt turn the motor.
my headers are really close to the starter so im guesing thats the problem.
what the hell do i do? heat shield on starter? thanks

You can try a shield but I would try a 4.0 starter. They are much smaller, lighter and would provide more clearance from the exhaust.

are the starters interchangable?

You can swap them, the solenoid wiring on the fender will have to be extended to the new starter. Tim

X2.
Im using a 4.2 starter on my 401 and i get the same hot start issues occasionally....didnt even consider the smaller 4.0 starter.
If nothing else, that would give me the clearance to build a heat shield

You can buy http://www.jegs.com/i/Thermo+Tec/893/11002/10002/-1 that stuff. brings the header temp WAY Down. Super simple 37 bucks.

Yep, I have the similar stuff on my down pipe from my turbo. Use the high temp Polyurathane coating also. My down pipe is literally about 1/8" from my starter and I have zero issues
