I installed my tera low 20 and everything was running great in 2 high. I went to wheel it and my low range whines like a banshee!
I clearanced the case and everything rotated fine on the bench. Is the whine normal or what? Any Help is greatly appreciated.

It's normal on the NP231 4-1 kits for them to whine for the first 15-20 miles of 4low. It says clearly in the instructions that there will be noise associated with the mod. When the whine settles down replace the fluid with synthetic.

I had the whine to for the first 4 or 5 times I wheeled in low and usually while climbing. It has stopped now and I have changed the oil. My instructions said nothing about a whine but from what I have seen here and on other bbs's the whine is very common.

I put synthetic in mine and little to no wine at all in low. Got to love the terra 20 kit. :0)

Thanks for the help, I'll pull the cover and check the oil just to make sure everything is ok. Its nice to know this is fairly common. anyone else?

We installed a teralow in a 231 and there was a bit more gear whine that usual and it didnt get any quieter after the customer took it on a few wheeling trips. Sometimes the gears just dont get cut right. Tera had no problem warranting it for us and the new one they sent out was quiet. I have no experience with the 20 teralow but with the 231's there is always a little gear whine. I dont know how loud yours is but if i get another one that is as loud as the one we had to warranty id go ahead and say its fawked and get a new one sent out. When its that loud there is no amount of break in time that will help..


If i were you id go ahead and call tera and tell them whats going on and that you'll try running it a little longer and get back with them if it doesnt go away.. cause by the time youve ran it long enough for you to know the whine is not going away and call tera they will most likely tell you to try running it a little longer :D

Never have had any whine in my 300 Tera Low, but also have heard that many others have.

Mine was loud at first, but after running it and changing the fluid a couple of times it has quieted down.

My TeraLow whined for the first couple of outings. After the planetary gears had a chance to break in and I put in new synthetic, the noise was significantly less.
