: Saving a beat to fawk blade
Munchies 12-18-2008, 10:24 AM I have a a few knives, a benchmade in particular. That have just been beat to fawk, and put away wet. The edge was straight, and now you could call it serrated :homer:
Should I just take it back an 1/8th and put a new edge on it?
I dont have jack for tools and equip right now :(
I need to go to sharpening school. I always used my dad's old 1960's clapped out lansky set. I have a mix of kitchen knives, straight blades, serrated, mixed fixed and folding. With most of the folding knives being high quality steel.
Tim84K10 12-18-2008, 10:37 AM send it back.
Yep, lifesharp is free.
Munchies 12-18-2008, 10:38 AM sorry for the suk pics. All I have is the embedded iphone camera :shaking:

Sounds like a good company.
Munchies 12-18-2008, 11:07 AM I saw the lifesharp deal. But they will fix it if its been ABUSED? or just if its dull.
because I am missing steel :P
I could have just turned it over, but my laziness is overpowering sometimes
Try sending it back. If you were local, I could regrind it for you :p
Munchies 12-18-2008, 11:24 AM Ok I will send it. See what happen's. If they say no can I send it to you mike?
I was local, lived in north tucson for the past 5 years before germany.
Sure, as long as you're OK with me getting to it 'as I can' (shouldn't take too long, just depends on work kids etc)
Aron82 12-18-2008, 12:06 PM You would need a nice belt grinder to take out that kind of damage. Be very careful to keep the final grind angle the same and do not let it get too hot as you will take the temper out of the blade.
Seeing as how you payed for the benchmade name, they will probably just replace the blade and send it back.
SilverZuk 12-18-2008, 12:34 PM Get a carbide sharpener, run it through until the edge is smooth.
May take a few evenings.
Then hit it on a stone.

I have a slow speed wet grinder. It's actually made to regrind edged tools, including knives, kind of helps when you make tools. There will be no tempering problems as the metal never gets hotter than about 60º f. No sparks either.
btw, most knife people don't sharpen blades near as often as predominately hand tool woodworkers. I got about a grand in stones alone.

Sorry but that is nothing. Just work that sucker on a coarse, med, fine stone set so its still sharp.. The chips will go away as the blad goes down. My Benchmade has about 15% less blad material then when I got it 5 years ago and I've had to put the serades back in it twice with a grinder.

Nice. I am saving up for a nice belt grinder so I can get back into knife making. I would love a bur king, but I don't think I can justify the price. You can shape a handle, as well as grind and sharpen blades on one.
The advice for sharpening was for him, not you.
intenseimages 12-18-2008, 02:37 PM Benchmade will re-sharpen that "not so bad" blade or replace the knife without a problem at all.
I know of only a handful companies that offer what is basically a "no questions asked" warranty, or used to. Gerber knives is one, Buck is another, Schrade/Old Timer is a third, SOG is a fourth, and Benchmade is a fifth one.
I am sure there are others out there, but I have had knives replaced by each of the above companies with no question, harassment, or delays of any kind.
Munchies 12-18-2008, 04:12 PM The blade is worse than it looks. The pictures make it look almost ok.
Sending ti to benchmade tomorrow!
