: homemade Ozone Generator
Todd W 12-18-2008, 05:24 PM I want to generate massive amounts of ozone to deodorize my garage and kill mold spores before I seal it all in with texture, primer and paint...
Anyone ever made one?
Seems pretty simple:
http://www.bigclive.com/ozone.htm
Anyone have a source for a 5kV or 10kV transformer, or 15kV is max it seems for output... let's go big :D
Also would stainless work better than copper mesh? Any idea on thickness of glass? I would assume I could use lexan but it would oxidize and become very brittle over time?

fastbeeatch 12-18-2008, 07:04 PM Youre wasting your time if you think youre getting rid of the mold spores. If you have a mold problem now run a dehumidifier to kill the active spores, then buy a sealer I forget where we buy our stuff. Basically mold spores are always present in the air, you have to seal what the spores feed on, or controlling moisture works best. If you really want to ozone and live close to somewhere in western MA I can probably let you borrow one of our machines.

I'd also like to get rid of the urine scent :D probably run it for a couple days in ONE ROOM. I want something that puts out massive ozone... will this not do like I've read on the web? for smell ?
PTSchram 12-19-2008, 11:50 AM Keep in mind that ozone will oxidize anything in the room that is oxidizable, like carpet padding and anything rubber/plastic.
Ozone is cool stuff, but it is very aggressive in its reactive properties.
High voltage transformers are available from neon signs and oil furnaces to name two sources.

My upstairs is 100% stripped down to the floor boards.
Nothing else at all exists other than windows, drywall, skim coat and some tack strips. The bathroom is down to the pipes, so I guess I would want to cover the ABS... although I do not plan to run it in there it may be a good idea to plywood off the rooms I run it in since I don't have doors either.
From what I read this stuff works you just need HIGH DOSAGE and let it run... of coarse the machine I make would have to be able to put off a high amount because from what I read you can't "build up" enough. IE: a 100mg or whatever measurement it is machine can't build up to 10k where a 6k or 8k machine could possibly.
Anyway.
If anyone has a 8k-15k machine they want to rent for a week or so let me know.

fastbeeatch 12-19-2008, 06:00 PM One obvious point you probably already know, make sure to seal off the room real good. If a pet gets in the room you're doing the ozone in you won't see said pet again in a live state anyways. It will kill anything and everything so yes you will be rid of the smell.
87JeepWrangler 12-22-2008, 11:34 AM fyi, even small amounts of ozone smell gives me a headache.
braxton357 12-23-2008, 02:30 AM I got a neon sign transformer off of ebay for $15 and built a small ozone gen years ago and it worked great.
Was a piece of glass with mesh on both sides inside of a pvc pipe with a computer fan on one end. You wouldn't want to sit in a small room with it running constantly though.
bigdreamin 12-23-2008, 12:34 PM What about spraying/ wiping everything down with bleach?
Todd W 12-23-2008, 12:35 PM DROOOL (http://cgi.ebay.com/15KV-60mA-110vac-input-Neon-Sign-Transformer-TESLA-HV_W0QQitemZ180289687480QQcmdZViewItemQQptZBI_Elec tronic_Components?_trksid=p3286.m20.l1116)
Bleach would have to absorb into the wood as much as the piss did.. means a LOT of bleach and then let it dry, and then the smell the put off when mixing
I`m going to ozone it and then coat it like 5x with Killz Oil based... which itself is a nasty killer :)
Chief yelling alot 12-23-2008, 06:26 PM mold and peee, im sure thats the smell your trying to get rid of hu :flipoff2::flipoff2::flipoff2:

Chief yelling alot 12-23-2008, 06:29 PM BTW I have found a bunch of 10K transformers off old oil or gas furnaces, (usily known as Ignition Transformers) can pick them up for around 10$ and they make great Jacobs ladders
SeanP 12-23-2008, 10:45 PM if its cat piss, you really want to replace the subfloor. Then you want to paint the rest of the room with Kilz to encapsulate any other odors.
SeanP 12-23-2008, 10:47 PM just saw that this was a garage. I would move

meh :flipoff2: garage and some in the house.
We got our walls re-textured and some new drywall, so everything is getting Killz Primer, and the floor is getting Killz Oil Based Primer too. Should be clean and smell fresk once its all done :D
It's amazing all the shit you put on your walls to make`m look sexay

the previous owners of our house must have locked a dog or cat into one of the bedrooms during the day. Even after pulling the carpet out, it still reeked. We had the guy who did our wood floors pull up the sub floor sheeting in that room to deal with it.
good luck
Wicked_S10 12-26-2008, 06:27 PM My house I bought about 10 years ago now was so bad it should likely have been condemed. The tenants had divided the basement up into about 8 rooms, complete with carpet, and used it as a kennel which never got cleaned. The upstairs was in a bit better, but similar shape. I think that is where the cats lived...
A few pointers, if you are interested. If you use bleach (I did), then be sure to get a good cartridge respirator. After stripping the carpets and padding, I bought I think 24 bottles of bleach, and poured it all on the floors, both upstairs, and the basement. I scrubbed it into the hardwood floors in the up stairs, and thing weren't so bad, but the floors were foaming. Started scrubbing the concrete in the basement, and it nearly killed me. I assume the ammonia in the urine and the bleach I poured on the floors had a party and accumulated a bunch of chlorine gas in the basement. I really fucked up my lungs in there. After that, charcoal cartridge respirator until the place was rinsed and dried. It probably would have been much, much worse for me if I had sprung for Clorox instead of the generic cheap bleach. So, be careful!
After I cleaned it, I sealed the floors in both the basement and the bedroom with either a Kilz or BIN brand paint, I still have the 5 gallon can and can get you the name if you like. IIRC it was either oil based or shellac based, and it worked awesome. Put it down on both the concrete and the hardwood and it sealed it all up, even the joints in the hardwood. The original plan was to refinish the hardwood, and use a clear shellac sealer by the same company who made the paint instead of a traditional hardwood finish, however, there were some stains in the hardwood that I just could not get out. I painted it white and laid carpet...
All in all, I like the Ozone idea. I can't wait to hear how it turns out. Am I correct in my understanding that you can have small units running in inhabited areas with no danger? If so, I wonder if it would help with the now musty smelling basement I have :)
Good luck,
Jason

Hey Jason, we've been putting down multiple coats of Killz oil based in our house since I haven't gotten this thing built yet :shaking: so far it's working great. Up to 3 coats now, and putting it on THICK.
Good idea about the concrete. We plan to strip, clean, and paint our basement floor too this will hopefuly get rid of our musty smell.
Yes, small ozone gen = good for removing smells. That's all the "Ionic Breeze" is really, an ozone generator. If you leave it on FULL BLAST in a bedroom you can smell it... it doesn't have enough OOMPH to kill mold spores, etc (unless they are moving through it) but it does freshen up musty closets, etc. I had one until it died :shaking: 300 way to much $ to spend on them, ebay :D
GSquared 12-30-2008, 03:25 PM I got bored this week.
Figured someone needed to build one of these things.
5KV transformer - 35$, picture frame with glass - 3$, wire - Free, Grounding Straps - Free

Don't mind the nutritional info...the guy at the cash register put that on there to let the guy at the door know i wasn't stealing it.

This thing works pretty damn good. Plug it in and it sounds like bacon frying, but really muffled.
The one thing that i noticed is that you need some kind of air flow or else the ozone generation kind of falls off after about 3 or 4 minutes in a stagnant area.
I am going to go back to the store (http://www.meci.com/) and get the 15KV transformer:grinpimp: and a bigger piece of glass as soon as i can find some stainless wire mesh. Anyone know of any good sources?

That exact transformer on the ebay site was only 100 bucks at Mendelsons (where i got mine).

I have some 2'x3' pieces of glas to use, but no SS wire, and no transformer at the moment, in the future :)
Glad someone built one :) Now add a lil-fan and bam D:

There is going to have to be a version 2 for this thing i think. Hot Melt glue doesn't like to stick to smooth glass. My heavy ass grounding straps have fallen off a couple times now. But glass this thin does not like my 000 steel wool or emery cloth.
I might have to go find some patience and use some RTV silicon and some 1000 grit sandpaper.

As said earlier, what worked for me was to put the glass in a large (diameter, not length) piece of pvc pipe and mount a breadbox type fan in one end. Protects the glass/element and provides good airflow.

10-4. Will try that as soon as i find a muffin fan or something.
Old Scout 01-02-2009, 05:34 PM USE one of these:
Hydronponic stores sell them for pretty cheap...try searching craigslist, they are always on there, at least up here. They are high voltage and kill you, either from shock or the Ozone so be careful. Neon sign ballast are what is normally used, and typically a glass cylinder is used along with the mesh rolled into cylinders giving you more surface area., all wrapped up in a air duct so you can blow air through it.
At my house we had the same issue when I bought it, we just killz primered all the floors. That did the trick all on its own.

Could sandblast the glass at the attachment points? Should stick then.

C'mawn Bob, you know that's low voltage and high current and for this, we need high voltage and low current!
I'm surprised you guys don't use ozone in your water system. I've worked at many facilities that used ozone for either waste water or drinking water treatment. Worked as well as UV.

Yes we have a good size Ozone generator at the spring site.
