: East meets West...Another XL TJ
jbdbloh7 12-18-2008, 05:29 PM Ok...the time has come to put together a thread documenting the last(hopefully!) build of my 04 Rubicon. I am sure there were lots of ways to get where I am at the end, but this is the way I went. The choices I made, I paid for, so I am not really concerned with snide remarks about any poor choices I made. I am sure at some point you will see something you will be excited to flame about, but understand I just don't give a fuck about your version about what I should or should have done. This jeep was built on my wallet and that gives me the right to do it as wrong as I want. Everything in a build is a compromise, and the only person who got to decide which was the most important was me. Don't like it? Don't read.
Now, on to the story...I bought it new in June of 2004 with just about 5 miles on it. It was pretty much stock as my daily driver until the end of the first summer of ownership when between my club's annual BBQ (NE4Wi) and the NEA Fall Krawl I decided it needed some quick modifications to be more effective on the trails. I won't post a stock pic, as we all know what they looked like, but here is a quick one of it when I added some quick lift (3inchs) and some new 315/75/16 MTRs for the Fall Krawl...
http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff209/jbdbloh7/04Build1.jpg
From there it went under the knife for a real lift, a six inch coilover lift from RK which really performed well for what I was looking for. In fact, I never had one issue with the lift even though we put it in ourselves (Thanks Harry and Eric!) with almost no previous experience.
http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff209/jbdbloh7/04Build27.jpg
With some other modification such as good winch, Kilby OBA, and minor things like bumpers and some minor interior additions, I was pretty much set to enjoy this jeep for a long time...until...you guessed it... with driver error and my girlfriend (now my wife) in the passenger seat... I rolled it for the first time down the cape with lots of people to watch and assist in the recovery.
http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff209/jbdbloh7/Rollover-CCJC20062.jpg
That guy running was my Dad. Until this past summer he was one of my riding buddies..until he rolled his 02 down Slick Rock during a trip to Tellico. Here is one of my favorite shots...
http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff209/jbdbloh7/Rollover-RVJC1.jpg
Prior to the roll, I was running 37inch BFG Krawlers and HBRK 17inch Beadlocks (Thanks Shane & Pepper)...and I had switched out my manual five speed for an automatic (Todd and Mike at Endangered Species in Holyoke, MA) who incidentally installed an Avenger Supercharger at the same time. The jeep was still streetable but not very good for long drives due to steering issues and concern about excessive tire wear. When the insurance company looked it over they determined that there was about 12k worth of damage...which they were trying really hard not to pay. After about two months of my calling them every name in the book, they cut a check and the fun began. I ordered all kinds of fun stuff instead of stock parts. My club had a tech day and we built a front hoop for my factory cage (take a deep breath) and I had some comp corners shipped in from PSC, some tube fenders from Smittybuilt with full inner fenders and had new suspension seats with five point harnesses installed. I also had the inside of the tub RhinoLined. Funny story about the Linex bitch from Plymouth, MA. I removed all of the interior and trailered my jeep tub over to him after him quoting me $600 for the job. When I got there he told me he would not do it because it was going to be more work. I asked him how much more and he said like two or three hours. After I asked him his hourly rate, which he said was $50, I told him I would give him $800 which would be more than adequate and he agreed. This was on a Monday. He called me Friday to tell me to pick it up and that it was not done because he was afraid I would not be satisfied with it and would likely tell everyone what a shit job he had done. That made a lot of sense, so I picked it up and told him that if I saw him again I would kick him in the balls and send the cell phone picture to all my friends to warn them if they used him they would suffer the same fate. I actually think he went out of business. And that leaves me with a shitty inferior RhinoLined tub, but atleast it is not carpet, right?
Ok...enough ranting...here is a picture of it from the body shop (Fred's Auto Body in Acushnet, MA). They did a great job, treated me well and I was pleased with the work. They were fast, professional, and personal. What more could you ask for...
One from the front - you can see some heat extractors thrown in for good measure...
http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff209/jbdbloh7/July20061.jpg
and one from the rear - you can see the cage additions (Thanks Carl and Jim)which were welded by my buddy Johnny Barnes...
http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff209/jbdbloh7/July20064.jpg
At this point, there was a need for a better tire carrier and a new front bumper. Ok, I guess it was a want, and not a need. The front bumper worked, the tire carrier was adequate, but I wanted something different, so my buddy who used to be Patriot Manufacturing came up with some pretty great ideas to put together some bumpers that were functional, and different. I came up with the idea for the rocker armor which had a recessed step so my girl could climb in since we took off those ridiculous tube steps from the early days. Jon is one of the most talented fab guys around and can really do some crazy shit if you let him. I could not have been happier with his work. Here are some pics of them in progress and some completed.
For the welding nazis out there, he definately brings the skills...

This one piece design bolts on in the factory location and included a mount for my OBA line and also for the winchline hook...
http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff209/jbdbloh7/CorysJeep005.jpg
The beginning of the rocker with the integrated step, and yes he fabbed up an interior sleeve so the inside was weather tight. Talk about attention to detail.

And a test fit before powdercoating...
http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff209/jbdbloh7/CorysJeep026.jpg
Looks great so far, I think almost everyone could go back and look at their builds and regret buying something or building something a certain way. It's not really until someone gets to the finally putting 60's underneath and realize that spending all that money trying to make a D30 survive is a waste  Let's see more!
jbdbloh7 12-18-2008, 05:45 PM Thanks boss. I am working on the thread as we speak...come back soon!
jbdbloh7 12-18-2008, 06:03 PM And the rear bumber tied into the rear cage with an integrated high lift mount and tire carrier...also with OBA line mount.

And the front back from powdercoat...
http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff209/jbdbloh7/TheReturnoftheKingII011.jpg
And the rockers...Jon has OCD as bad as me...notice he painted the wheels and the suspension while it was in his shop? You could never be upset about a guy working on your rig who treated it like it was his own.
Now to this point, it has been pretty good to me, performed well and never failed. I have had, like everyone else my own share of operator issue, but this jeep had not let me down...
However, having run in some pretty big places with some really good drivers in some really sweet rigs, I did what most people would do. I wanted more. Having spent two summers in Tellico, riding with Greg and Amy Stone, some boys from NAXJA at thier annual summer trip to Murphy and hanging out with Andy Z a bit from Carolina Rock Shop, I knew that I wanted something that would hang with the buggies some if not all of the time...especially after beating my jeep in Lower 2 and not getting up some of the places on my 37s without cable. And so it begins...the final round of cutting...
This time it was at a place that fortunately was near my home. Bay State Offroad is located in southeastern MA, in Middleboro. My build started out as a new RockKrawler 8inch Pro Stretch kit and moved into a completely custom project which has taken a little over a year. We are almost in the final phase, with minor things left to do, but like all things, money, time and parts have taken thier toll on this build.
We start with:
New FF 14bolt with disc brakes, detroit and 513s.
78 HP Ford 60 - Chromo 35 spline axles with a PowerLock (this will be replaced before the season starts) and a slight bend. More on the bend later...
SniperFab BackHalf kit
Full Hydo Steering
H2 wheels
[5] 42inch Bias Iroks
It started by cutting the original lift and axles out and putting it to rest on blocks for the winter while we waited for parts. The purchaser bought the entire suspension and axles to install under a CJ. I am not sure how he made out, but I gave him a great deal...On blocks...
http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff209/jbdbloh7/Miscellaneous5.jpg
And Bob began the prepping of a seriously shaved 14 bolt by Lucas at his work (Kessler Machine). He took about 2.5 inches off...
http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff209/jbdbloh7/RearAxleShave26.jpg
a half inch plate was made with some clearancing...
http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff209/jbdbloh7/RearAxleShave24.jpg
and the housing/cover was modified to connect to the truss...
http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff209/jbdbloh7/RearAxleShave14.jpg
http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff209/jbdbloh7/RearAxleShave15.jpg
A lot of welding...and some sick fab skills later...
http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff209/jbdbloh7/RearCoverandTruss1.jpg
And so not to leave out all the extra work put in by a guy who leaves nothing to chance, you can see here where Bob seam welded the truss that came in my kit from RK...
http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff209/jbdbloh7/RearCoverandTruss7.jpg
whwheeler21 12-18-2008, 06:15 PM Very nice work. Good idea with the rear tire carrier and cool axle mount on your work bench.
jbdbloh7 12-18-2008, 06:21 PM So to this point, we have basically figured out that I am not going to be happy with the 10 inch coils that came with the kit for the rear, as they are designed to go in-line with the frame like my earlier kit. I wanted something more symetrical, so I called Jeremy at RK and he sent out some 12s to match the fronts and a set of front coil mounts so I can have the rear mounted like the front. I tossed the idea around a bit about the use of the Gen-Right or Poly inframe mounts, but was not sure that would make me happy. I was going to by a backhalf kit, or make one (Ok, have Bob make one...haha) and we opted for the kit. It was really a tossup to which one to buy, typically I would have bought from Dan (BTF) but they were unable to get me one on the time schedule I had (really tight as you can tell...hehe) so I took a chance on the NKOTB, Don at SniperFab. Let me say how impressed I was with his demeanor and interest in making me happy. He was straight up about what to expect for delivery, he made me a great deal on the product as I am the first out of his shop install for this, so there was some concern about the quality and ease of install on my part. Aside from some very minor (and by the way, it is very easy for me to call things minor as I am not in the shop daily trying to put together what amounts to a pile of parts not designed to work together and make a customer happy at the same time!) design concerns, the product exceeded expectations. Great quality, fit and finish. I would buy from him again in a minute. To that end, here is a few shots of the backhalf kit install:
The removal - and yes... I cut the frame off. It was pretty cool considering this thing is still owned by Chrysler...haha...
http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff209/jbdbloh7/RearFrameRemoval1.jpg
A picture of one of the fit/finish issues we had with the kit. The dimples interferred with the frame sides, but as you guessed it, they were no match for my fabricator...hehe
http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff209/jbdbloh7/SniperFab12.jpg
Tacked in to check fitment before burning it all together...
http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff209/jbdbloh7/SniperFab14.jpg
And the final look before the rear suspension was added...one a side note, as a fussy prick, the only thing about this kit that I was not fond of was the D-ring mounts which came as four separate plates that had to be welded together. They are plenty strong enough but do not have the finished look I would have preferred from ones cut from one piece of stock....
http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff209/jbdbloh7/SniperFab1.jpg
Here is a cool set of Rock Rings my buddy made at his family shop (J&J Fabrication in Waltham). I asked him to include drains so that water/debris would not be trapped in the rim. I think they came out pretty sweet... 1/2 inch aluminum...
http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff209/jbdbloh7/RockRings-preweld.jpg
jbdbloh7 12-18-2008, 06:24 PM Very nice work. Good idea with the rear tire carrier and cool axle mount on your work bench.
Thanks - I am not quite sure what we will do on the tire mount yet, but I know after the last two trips out with some friends, tires have been the majority of the casualties so I think I will reconsider leaving my spare on the trailer.
Bob has some pretty ingenious ideas to make his work easier...
jbdbloh7 12-18-2008, 06:38 PM Here is a final shot of the shaved 14 before the install into the rear...

And installed using the identical front mounts for a symetrical look...

http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff209/jbdbloh7/RearInstalled1.jpg
If you look at those pics carefully, you will notice a couple of things, the lower control arms mounts are in front of the axle for less hangups, and the coilover mounts have been braced on the back to provide additional support. I might have to install some rear spacers, but you will see later in the pictures the coils are not in a bad place. In this next picture you can see the 1/2 inch clearance between the frame rail and the lower control arm.
http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff209/jbdbloh7/RearFrameControlArmClearance.jpg
To this point in the build, I have been extremely happy. I cannot imagine things going better. The shave was an addition to the original plan and it went better than expected. When you are building something like this, you can expect lots of changes, increased costs, and overall discontent when things do not go according to plan, but I can honestly say, that so far none of those things have been an issue in this build.
jbdbloh7 12-18-2008, 07:25 PM Now, on to the front. Before this can happen, there is lots of prep needed. The frame needs to be cleared of unnecessary bracketry from the original coil buckets, the steering box and the OEM upper control arm mount. Also the track bar mount was removed. This was a considerable task even for a plasma cutter. Since the original plan was hydro-assist, stretching the front was not really an option (ok an inch or two was hoped for) but since the Rubicon came with a Mercedes box, the plan to tap it was scrapped when one of our club members was parting out his rig and made available to me his complete set-up for a great price. All I need to buy was a double ended ram and some clevises. I traded the new hydro-assist already purchased for the previously shown rock rings. With that limitation out the window, a new plan was needed and we made some adjustments to stretch the front out a bit. I wanted it to be similar to the amount the rear was stretched, but opted for a few more inches so that my approach angle would be better and provide more stability in a hill climb.
Knowing how much I wanted this final build to be well thought out and implemented, I figured the best way to move the front forward would be to cut the RK control arm/skid mounts in half and move the front half forward. Well, since this was not an option (it had previously been welded to the frame) Bob figured out that we could cut a left side mount in half and turn the back half around and mount it on the right side. This gave us the lower/upper left side mount and also the right side lower mount. It also gives us the option to move the front pretty much wherever we wanted within reason. There was some modification made to the mounts to allow for the frame orientation and some trimming to keep the lines the same. This will also allow me to install another skid plate to keep the bottom protected. What it does do however is leave me with no place to install my engine skid. (you can see it in the earlier picture of me on the roof...haha) I will have to come up with another idea for that before long. Here is a picture of the mount getting cut on the new to the shop band saw...
http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff209/jbdbloh7/CustomFrameMount1.jpg
Now, a few words about my front axle. First, I won't pretend I knew it was bent before buying. I did not. I bought the rear axle on eBay for short money, considering it was all new, came clean (no brackets) with new gears, new locker and new brakes. Not a bad deal for $1100. Well, considering I don't mind a road trip, I decided to pick it up from Shamokin, PA which was about 400 miles one way. The guy I bought it from owns an axle shop. I ask him about some front choices and he mentions a few options. He tells me he prefers to take cores in exchange, so I tell him about the 78 HP 60 I have in my yard. He tells me about this axle from his truck that he took out to put in 2.5 tons. I figure it sounds good, so I will buy it. I gave him my axle (apart) and 400 for this one with 35spine chromoly axles and a PowerLock, but somehow don't notice it is bent because I am busy loading the 14 bolt and looking over the crazy big mud trucks this guy has all over the place. Once home, we start looking it over and realize it has a bent short side. We check it, it does not seem to hinder operation and realize quickly that after lots of beatings this will likely happen anyway. So an attempt was made to correct some of the bend and we moved on. Lots of trussing and braces will keep it from distorting any further (Hopefully!) Here is a pic of the efforts to remove the bend...
http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff209/jbdbloh7/Bent601.jpg
A TNT truss was ordered and some axle mounts and the work began. I can tell you that I was not impressed with them from the start. They quoted me that the items were in stock and ready to go, so they would be shipped out immediately. That was a lie. After waiting a week, I was told they were about to be welded and would ship the next day. Whoa...that was a problem since I originally ordered them all unwelded (they wanted to weld the mounts to the truss) so Bob could make adjustments as needed. And as most of you know, they are not known for thier quality welds. When they did finally show up, I was disapointed that I did not ask them to send the truss unwelded as the welds looked like it was a Monday morning hangover job. Fit and finish were deplorable. Here is a few pics of thier quality products...
http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff209/jbdbloh7/TNT5.jpg
http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff209/jbdbloh7/TNT6.jpg
http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff209/jbdbloh7/TNT8.jpg
Do you know how much work it was to make those parts fit? I do, and believe me, it pisses me off to think about paying good money for parts and then paying good money to have them "modified" to fit with the stuff you ordered them for. Note to self...delete thier number from phone. Nuff said.
jbdbloh7 12-18-2008, 07:48 PM Now, as the front axle build continued... I started to collect lots of full hydro pics from P4x4...then I am fortunate enough to get connected with a local MA guy (rolloverboy on PBB) who has a comp rig (W.E.Rock Pro-mod #734) with the same front axle and a very similar setup. It was high quality work, done by some local guys (Shameless Fabrication) in a club I belong to (NE4Wi), and he sends me some detailed information and some great pictures. My fabricator completes the preliminary work of trussing, and tying the cover to the truss. Some pics of that work below...
http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff209/jbdbloh7/FrontAxle16.jpg
An additional support added to the left side...
http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff209/jbdbloh7/FrontAxle15.jpg
The hours in this front end dwarf the rear, and it shows. I could not have expected it to be better built. Trying to fit the 2.5inch/8stroke PSC ram in the right location for stress-free movement was difficult especially since it is needed to be as low on the axle as possible but high enough not to be the lead rock catcher...haha. A few more pics...

Front Axle Components:
Ballistic High Steer Arms with ARP studs
TNT Truss/Mounts
GLO HD Diff Cover
PSC 2.5inch/8stroke DE Ram w/LRG Clevises
Ballistic Joints/Tie Rods
jbdbloh7 12-18-2008, 07:59 PM Now some of the front axle installed. As a side note, the TNT upper mount was removed as it was not the correct size for the upper control arm end. Nice work sending that out. We did not end up using the track bar mount from them either as you can see in the installed pic versus the build pics. Bob ordered a generic trackbar kit from Clayton because it comes with a new frame mount and a non bent trackbar which is what I needed for correct steering geometry. As it turned out, the mount that came with the kit also was not used as it was determined that some additional room was needed to keep things in proper place. You can see the final outcome was worth it, however frustrating it can be.

Everything fits in nicely. With a planned four inches of uptravel, the height will be somewhat high overall, but that was the part of the original compromise that I was willing to accept to get the other choices that were more important to me.
Youve done some nice work.:smokin: I like it.
jbdbloh7 12-18-2008, 08:27 PM Whew... this is going fast...haha. The jeep is on wheels for the first time in over a year. This is definately an exciting day. Actually, it could not have been better. They let school out early on this day because we were supposed to get hammered in an ice storm that did not hit the southshore at all. So, I got paid for the day, went out to breakfast with ScottyK and we got to push the jeep out for some poser shots with the forklift and I actually washed an assload of welding soot from the paint. Who can say they had a better day than me last week? Hmm...come to think of it, we are getting out early tommorow too... can you say repeat? Scotty? Bob? You boys up for some Nick's...haha.
Ok...some pictures. Now some things to think about. It sits high, but actually I think it is right where I expected so I am pleased. I know it is not for everyone, but guess what? It is for me, so fuck em if they don't like it. We planned for four inches of uptravel, thats what we got. We did not deflate the tires to really get accurate ideas of droop, but that will come. We were waiting on the lug nuts from Summit so, we made due with a shortage...haha. I think I might need to get some spacers as previously mentioned, but am not sure yet. The hydro-steering is not installed yet, so we had to push it out. I also have to get the fuel cell and ring ordered, but it is Christmas, so I cannot order them until the first of the year.
Ok, on to the pictures... first one on wheels in 13 months!
http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff209/jbdbloh7/Roller2.jpg
Side shot - 113/114 inches, just enough to get it done...slightly more stretch in the front... I like how the h2s look with the rings...and plenty of room for 47 LTBs
http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff209/jbdbloh7/SideStance1.jpg
Rear shot - you can tell the front tenders are completely compressed giving the jeep a slight rake forward. This issue is under discussion. Jeremy has suggested this will help prevent front end from unloading in a climb. I like the look, so I might try it out...

Thanks - I can only take credit for the vision and the wallet on this...Most of the ideas came from PBB and some of the great people I have met along the way. All the fab work came courtesy of Bob (bobsiwinski@baystateoffroad.com) at Bay State Offroad (www.baystateoffroad.com).
jbdbloh7 12-18-2008, 08:40 PM And now on to some poser shots...hehe. Believe me, when the steering is done, this will get beat in the rockpile like it stole your lunch money...

jeep937 12-18-2008, 09:06 PM Holy Chit:eek: Nice work.
What say anyone about the front being bent and how that might affect the carrier and gears over a long time. Maybe with some street driving.
Are Dodge/Cheby knuckles way stronger than '78-9 Fords? Why not go orange or plate 'em?
That rear is just plain nastie.:smokin: Nice shave. Any leaks yet?
Nice pics. Dig that front strech:jeep:
Damn, that has a really good stance to it. Do the rear coilovers rub on the tires when flexed out? Looks really close if they don't. Might just be the camera angle

Well, before I decided to build the axle, we determined that since it was off road only there would not be the same issues with it as there would be for a street driver. Like anything else, it is a chance. Hell, I could build a straight axle and bend it like my buddies with some extra high jumping...(right ScottyK?)
I am not sure about the knuckles. As far as the cover, none yet, and don't expect any as the mating surface is a good as factory and the additional protection providing clamping force will deter any (in my mind atleast...haha). I appreciate the comments on the stretch. I feel like it will be beneficial with the terrain I like to run.

Thanks for the props on the stance! and Nope - not the cameral angle...they hit a bit, but not sure it will be as problematic as it seems as #1) tires are still inflated to 30lbs, and #2) I am thinking about wheel spacers to assist in the issue.
rangerjoe2001 12-19-2008, 05:21 AM I like the upper coilover mounts. Was thinking of doing something like that since i dont have a bender and am stubborn and like to make my own stuff. What thickness plate did you use?
bobnoxious 12-19-2008, 05:33 AM Holy Chit:eek: Nice work.

I'm also hopeful that between being the front vs. the rear, and the fact that it's a trail rig now, that the bent front housing won't be an issue (for a while anyways).

jbdbloh7 12-19-2008, 05:57 AM Hi Cory:smokin:
Morning Bob... any interest in Nick's this morning? hehe....
I like the upper coilover mounts. Was thinking of doing something like that since i dont have a bender and am stubborn and like to make my own stuff. What thickness plate did you use?
The upper mounts are part of the original lift kit from Jeremy at RK. I wanted it to stay relatively symetrical front to rear, so I ordered an extra set. I think they are 1/2 plate, beefy for sure. You could definately fab them at home.

336wheeler 12-19-2008, 01:10 PM Baller status. I love the way it turned out!
jbdbloh7 12-19-2008, 01:24 PM Thanks 336...
Still some things to work out. I am doing the research for the fuel cell. Gonna use the RCI tank that everyone runs. Have to order some tabs and then measure for some limiting straps, drive shafts. Finish cleaning up a winch for the rear. Not sure if I should cut it down (m8000) to be a short drum. Figure out the rest of my skid plates... not much left at all considering the laundry list that has been put to rest...

Word. I'm also running the RCI 2161 cell in my heep with an E2000 pump. A word from the wise, if you run the E2000, at least mount it on the floorboard of the tub so that the fuel pump can siphon instead of pull. I know this because the first E2000 I ran was mounted on top of the fender well and the pump had to work too much, causing it to burn up. It is now mounted on the floor of the tub.

hmm.... tell me more. I got the impression that I could buy a fuel ring and use the TJ pump with some minor hose connections... I am not going to be changing my fuel rail as it would be problematic for my supercharger...
336wheeler 12-19-2008, 07:10 PM You can run the TJ pump inside the cell without problems, yes. I didn't know that you were going that route - I sold the gas tank and all when I was building mine, so I started at square one.
Nice build. Whats the wheelbase?
jpfrk2001 12-19-2008, 07:42 PM Good looking rig. I like the details. Just a question, How is the performance of the avenger SC kit on the motor? How hard can it pull? Just wondering.

I didn't know that you were going that route - I sold the gas tank and all when I was building mine, so I started at square one.Ahhh...I still have mine so I will do that as it is the simplest and most efficient way to get it running...
Nice build. Whats the wheelbase?I think it is 113/114. I haven't measured it on the ground with wheels. I am pretty sure it is around there. I will put up some real stats Monday when I can get by the shop unless Bob puts them up first...
Good looking rig. I like the details. Just a question, How is the performance of the avenger SC kit on the motor? How hard can it pull? Just wondering. I have been very happy with it, but to be honest I will have to reserve pulling judgment until I run it with the 513s and 42s. I installed it when the 37s with 410s and it ran basically like it was stock since the 410s were undergeared for the tires. This time around I am sure to see how much of a difference it should make. I plan on some other upgrades under the hood in late February after tax time and the jeep has been tested. Some methanol injection and hopefully a new 10lb pulley....
I thought the leather Jeep bra was the best part of this hole build.:lmao: Seriously, I think you're rig is sick.:smokin:
Mean_Green 12-20-2008, 12:29 PM love the frame
jbdbloh7 12-21-2008, 11:20 AM love the frame
Thanks...like I said, I am real happy with how it turned out. The fitment was very easy with the exception of some minor trimming for the rear bumper. I think it looks as good as it will perform. I did not want to just tube it out like everyone else. Don't get me wrong, I like tube and buggies as much as the next guy...and someday I will have one, but did not want to start this one that way. Don at SniperFab (www.sniperfab.com) was great to work with. He was realistic on the timeframe and gave me a hell of a good deal on it since I was the first field install. The body mounts were pretty slick too...

I miss that thing...haha...when I rolled it the first time the supercharger burned through it so I retired the bra...haha...
rifleman 12-21-2008, 11:55 AM Nice job Cory-
Beautiful rig and very well built.
I am looking forward to seeing you on the trail.
Matt Y
jbdbloh7 12-21-2008, 12:44 PM Thanks Matt...how is your rig coming along? Any pictures?
patriotcj7 12-22-2008, 05:36 AM Hey Cory...Jeep's looking great. Thanks for the kind words on the fab I did for you. Did you find someone to use the old rear bumper I fabbed for you? Looks like the tire carrier could be intergrated into the new rear frame externsion. Nice to see it all coming together. I love the stance and the long front stretch, should really help center your weight. can't wait to see how it performs on the trails this year.
jbdbloh7 12-22-2008, 06:38 AM I think that I am gonna use the rear tire carrier just like you originally designed it but the mounting plate needs to be modified for 8x6.5... I am worried about being without a spare so far in the woods...
and yes, I think it will love hill climbing...
moparmaniaccuda 12-22-2008, 09:40 AM Hey Cory, Colin here.
Looks sweet man! I love the whole look of the rig.
I'm heading over to Bob's shop tomorrow to pick up the extra XJ D44 shafts he pounded some new bearings on. You going to be around then? I'd love to take a tour of everything in person.
I can never say enough how amazing Bob is at fabricating/welding.
And yeah...BFGs don't take well to rocks/logs...lol
Cya around!
jbdbloh7 12-22-2008, 09:55 AM Thanks - I am more than pleased with how it is coming out! When are you going to be there? I am not sure I will be up there tomorrow. I may be just give me a call...
moparmaniaccuda 12-22-2008, 05:27 PM Should be getting there around 4 p.m. I have like an hour of PTO left to use up this year lol.
I'll give you a call when I'm leaving work to see if you're headed up that way.
jbdbloh7 12-23-2008, 03:21 AM I will be waiting for your call. I will be at the shop this afternoon as it turns out...see you then...Do you have an 9/16 studs? I need three...for the spare carrier...

I only have 1/2" (stock XJ ones) I believe. Not to mention they're sitting at my house lol. Sorry man.
jbdbloh7 12-23-2008, 08:51 AM I guess I can try PepGirls on the way home...I am sure (reasonably) that they might have some....haha
crosbike 12-23-2008, 07:56 PM This build is great. A buddy of mine pointed me here today. Nice to see a local running some big ass axles. baystateoffroad looks like a real good shop. where on the cape do you wheel/roll?

Thanks - been wanting to run these for some time but the need was never there until the last two trips to Tellico and realized I would not be happy until I was full width and stretched for some of the bigger obstacles. I am happy with the work that I have had done for sure. I actually do not wheel on the cape as there is almost no legal place that I am aware of. The only real time I was there is in the roll photo...haha...besides trying to get sand out of the interior is worse than trying to clean out mud... I belong to some clubs with private land that really negates my need to go places where wheeling is not welcome. Do you belong to any clubs? Where on the cape do you live?

jbdbloh7 12-24-2008, 06:22 AM soooo time for 47's yet??? :D
I have to make them last until 1) Tax time or 2) Summer Pay or 3) I find some crazy person who has 4 that wants to trade for my 5 new 42s...hehe but they are on the horizon for sure....

Cape and wheeling are not compatible that is why i asked where you were. I belong to sisoffroad.com and make several runs to Rausch creek and various other locales a year. I live in marstons mills and work in falmouth.
jbdbloh7 12-24-2008, 01:02 PM Cape and wheeling are not compatible.
That is fucking hilarious... so very true. You should check out Summit Crawlers (www.summitcrawlers.com). We have lots of private land that would be close enough for you to wheel. I have not made it to RC yet, however I too like to venture out for the good stuff. This summer I plan to run to the Badlands and Harlen to replace my annual Tellico trip. I have run the last two summers with NAXJA (06,07) but since they have closed the better parts, I don't think I will drag my shit that far. I looked at that forum, looks cool...I have never heard of it before though I have several good friends from CT...weird. If you are interested in chatting or hanging out some, PM me...I am off until Jan 5...gotta love school break...and summer breaks...and all the other time off...hehe... Being a teacher is great except for how much money we don't make...
MassZJ 01-03-2009, 06:26 AM updates? :bounce2:
jbdbloh7 01-03-2009, 06:42 AM Unfortunately not. I am hoping that this week wraps up the steering and then it will be rolled onto the trailer for pickup. Then I will have to solve driveshafts/flanges and long term fuel for wheeling. It would be nice to make some of the winter runs with the clubs I belong to...I have been riding bitch way too long.

That is all.
MTblazer87 01-03-2009, 10:34 AM I love this jeep. It is by far one of my favorites. It is exactly what I would love to do to mine. My props to Bay State Offroad. I can't wait to see photos of it getting its legs stretched.
jbdbloh7 01-03-2009, 01:27 PM :smokin:
That is all.
Thanks...it definately is a work in progress. Like everyone else, I wish I had just built this from the beginning, but it would have never come out this way as a majority of the final touches and plans came from my time in the seat and watching my friends with much bigger/better rigs hammering the hell of of the rigs they drive...

I am sure the first pics of it will be with Bob making it sorry for taking so long...haha.
Ankeny_Jeeper 01-06-2009, 08:08 PM I, too, have enjoyed this thread! You should be set up pretty good for 2009! I am also interested in your update on how the supercharger performs with the new set-up. I am set up basically the same way you are, except I am running 5:38 gears and a Stak T/C.
jbdbloh7 01-06-2009, 09:44 PM Thanks - Do you have plans to supercharge? What size tires are you running now? I originally wanted to run 5:38s, but thought since it is forced induction I could do fine with the 5:13s..we will see. I still need to find a 35 spline detroit for the front... I was hoping my buddy would lend me his but he is keeping it for his rig...damn him...haha
jbdbloh7 01-07-2009, 03:40 PM For those that are interested, today was to say the least depressing. I had an opportunity to pull the drivers fender off to give Bob access to install the hydraulic steering components. This was not a simple task as (and hopefully he will post up a picture...we took a few to make sure we remembered where everything was mounted...) there are several things mounted to the inner fender that are not OEM such as the automatic computer (this jeep was originally a stick) pressure regulators and additional components for my Kilby OBA, and lots of hoses and whatnot from the supercharger/intercooler. After removing the whole lot of them, and all the fender bolts we had some difficulty getting the fender to come off...
As it turns out, it will not come off because of the rocker armor that extends to the front fender, which is held on with some pretty little allen bolts...and...wait for it....wait......several welded frame mounts to add additional strength...sigh.
So after lots of monkey fucking, and significant frustration, I was able to re-install all the recently removed hardware...although the fender would likely not move regardless...
At some point the armor will cease to exist as I would like to eventually boatside, but not this season...
Coming soon....detroit, RCI cell, new 33 inch SS braided lines and hopefully some limiting straps...

Question about the rear 14BFF .... do you have any more picture of the ring gear and the carrier?? How far did you cut it down?
im running a 14BFF rear and im wanting to cut down the ring to the OD of the carrier so i can shave it as much as possible. i need my jeep low slung and i wont be running anything over a 4D on it ... so clearence is my biggest issue.
what process was used to cut it down?? what problems were encountered?
any info you have would be a great help ... no detail is too small.
thanks.
jpfrk2001 01-11-2009, 03:45 PM If you want an idea what yours will perform like, I can let you know. Im running 40" Maxxis CC's, 5.38 gears, AX-15 tranny, and average 6 pounds of boost at 3000 rpms(8 pounds at 4000rpm). Around town, It pulls decently hard and builds up speed quick.
In the dirt in 2wd hi, 2nd and 3rd gear are useless because all I do is spin all day long. I have to be carefull and feather the gas when in 2nd and 3rd. By the time I shift to 4th at 3000 rpm, Im doing almost 70mph which is kinda stupid in the dirt(but very fun).
Soo, if your running 42's on 5.13's, I imagine you won't get as much spin and be able to use your lower gears more in the high speed stuff. Around town, It will pull good, but don't expect to be in a muscle car.
I can say, when I throw on my 36" soon to be bald TSL's, I go around town and fudge around with the typicall modern day V-8 muscle cars and ricers because it will pull soo hard it feels like the frame is going to rip in half! And its priceless to see the expressions on thier face:laughing:
I just thought you might want to know since both of our motors are probably putting out the same power. I figure 300-320 hp at the crank. Good luck with your build. Any updated pics?

I finished mine last fall and got it on the trail. Still upgrading though. Putting 35 spline chromo's (stubs) in the front 60 now.
Luke4554 01-12-2009, 08:23 AM This may seem as an odd question but did you have to have special additional coverage for your insurance to cover the jeep during wheeling? For some reason i know my luck with insurance companies and i would be told to grab my ankles. Im just curious for future endeavors if there is something i should do to cover my ass, as well as my rig. You would think as much money as you spend annually on insurance they should cover anything regardless of where you are but i figured i would ask how you convinced them or what you needed to do so there wasnt an issue with it when the time came to pull out the wallet.
Thanks alot!
Awesome build. really diggin' the rear back half and the front axle work.

Thanks...it has been a labor of love for sure. Thankfully I was able to find a locl shop with the level of expertise needed and the time and interest to devote the level of attention I wanted for this. With this build, every little piece was seeminly an interference with the rest, so lots of fitment, planning and compromising was involved.
As far as the rear goes, look here (http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=734772&highlight=)
If you have any specific questions, post and I will try get the answers for you. From memory: 2.5 inches were cut from the housing, .5 inch was added as flat stock with a 1/8 tall clearance for the ring gear which was not ground. A lip and matching cover was fabbed to finish the job. Most of the pictures I have are from the fab work, not of the cutting. That was done at Kessler Machine by Lucas, so he did not take any pictures.

I will try to get some at the shop this week, I have been busy with work and a gun show this weekend. I know that it performed fairly well with the 37s on 410s, so I think it should be ok like this. I would love to find a smaller (more boost) pulley for this supercharger but have had no luck at all. I would like one that puts out about 9-10lbs of boost. I am thinking about methanol injection so I can cut down on detonation and decrease the fuel type to 87 instead of 93. We will see...
Damn Cory, you got enough shit stuffed under that hood?
Hows the steering going?
Im dying to see video of you or Bob punishing it:evil:
There is not a lot of room for sure. Who knew there was not enough space under there...haha. I wanted to lose the fenders and just run a tube to hold the hood, but I have too much shit on the inners to remove them...haha. I don't think I want to be around when Bob takes it out for the first time. I fear he will be treating it like a virgin on prom nite...haha...

Well, I think after this is done, I might have it reassessed. I did roll it early on and they paid out 12k, so they are not too happy with me about it for sure. I had to increase coverage for all the earlier mods. I will make some calls and let you know what I find out. Thanks for the comments. I am very happy with it for sure.
And a quick thanks to Bob for posting the underhood pics...I have not had time to go get them...haha...
Ankeny_Jeeper 01-19-2009, 12:20 PM Thanks - Do you have plans to supercharge? What size tires are you running now?
sorry, missed the question. I am running 42's with the stock auto tranny. I am just doing a little research, in case I want more power. Options are: supercharge the 4.0, build up the 4.0, LS1 engine swap, or just leave the damn thing alone and go wheeln'.:shaking:

I am still looking for a smaller supercharger pulley to reach 9-10lbs of boost, but I am sure it will be fine. I have contemplated the LSx swap for a long time and just not sure I want to throw away all the money I already invested in this motor...
nice build... leave it alone and get some wheeling in. haha...at this point, nothing else is on the schedule except finish the small details...love the charger build...great job!

I really don't suggest any more then 8 pounds unless you have forged pistons with shot peened rods.
KacksterK5 01-20-2009, 08:20 PM Do you have your front and rear 4 link calculator numbers?
bobnoxious 01-21-2009, 05:33 PM Do you have your front and rear 4 link calculator numbers?
It's a Rock Krawler 3 link front/4 link rear kit, so no #'s available.
bobnoxious 01-22-2009, 08:54 AM In other words, we didn't plug in the #'s for the kit and see what they were.
TJBuck 01-27-2009, 05:24 PM HOLY MOTHERFUCKING SHIT:eek: I saw this monster in person today. The pictures dont do it justice. Bob has done an incredible job building this Jeep.:smokin: Cory, you have one sick rig, Bob, you have some sick skills. Nice work guys.

Thanks Ken...I am very happy with it to say the least. There is a small punch list of items to put together so this can see this thing beaten...haha
I ordered driveshafts today from Six States. I gotta tell you, those guys are great. Being as I am at the end of this build, money is tight and every penny counts so I priced about six places, three local and three long distance. The local guys that were interested in building were outrageous, and the three LD ones were the most reasonable, but Six States beat the others by almost $150 before shipping, and he said they will ship tomorrow. Thats pretty fucking sweet in my book. He took good care of me last time as I recall, but seemingly this time he is really earning my business.
I also made the calls on Friday about my cell, RCI 2161a from Summit. I tried to use a code from club member for a discount of $25 off, which I must have mis-wrote, but even still they honored it. Not bad I must say. As I prepared to order the fuel ring from Gen-Right, I came across the one offered by TJKen (KORE) on this board and I looked over his other products on the web. His ring was flush mounted and would use as much of the fuel available in the cell as possible, and he offered a hose "kit" with all the necessary AN fittings and fuel line to install the cell so I gave him a call, and within minutes re-routed my cell from Summit to his shop for fitment and prep work. I am trying to make the late February snow run for the NEA so I am trying to find ways to shave time... when it arrives, all that will be needed it to mount it and connect the hoses... I also odered his drive slugs for my front axle as well.
Another Friday afternoon stop landed me all new hoses for my hydro steering from Schuster in New Bedford. They made them while I waited...not bad for an afternoon...haha. I am hoping to see this thing in the rock pile behind the shop within the next two weeks... only a few other things to tie up. I have to send the ram to Sean at PSC to remove an inch and a quarter from the throw, order some limiting straps and fill the tank...
TJBuck 02-04-2009, 07:25 AM You're so close man, the excitement must be killing you!
good luck on getting her finished up and make sure to post up a video of the first thrashing on the rock pile. Super cool rig Cory :smokin:

I have all of the same fuel cell stuff in my Jeep...KORE rings and install kit was much easier to order as a "kit" then having to hunt them all down.
jbdbloh7 02-10-2009, 04:55 PM I am stoked, I got the shipping email today, so it should be in house by the end of the week. Plans to install it and the other goodies are in the works and hopefully we can see it move under it's own power. Ken was great and gave me a great price for the install and parts, so how can you go wrong?
OkLaHoMaYJ 02-10-2009, 05:14 PM Ken is the man. I'll be going to him in the future for sure. You'll love it. My ONLY complaint is the TJ fuel pump whine :p....and that can be easily drowned out with the radio.
TJBuck 02-11-2009, 06:09 AM Impatiently waiting.....:goofball:

jbdbloh7 03-18-2009, 02:57 PM To start with...I would like to mention to all that helped with this project, thanks does not cover the gambit on this project. I am completely overwhelmed with how well it has turned out. Despite what amounts to approximately 16 months of downtime, this was without a doubt the best possible choice for me. In the past I have been happy with the jeep but not completely satisfied. This (hopefully) final phase has changed all that. It began with a couple of ideas, grew to be what many considered excessive, and eventually turned into the end result I have always wanted. For that I thank Bob, the guy who throughout this project has always been there for my hundreds of questions, pushing him to find and think of things that I had previously not. His dedication to my dream has made this version of my jeep possible. We took it for it's maiden voyage this past weekend to the shop rockpile. I let him drive the first run...as promised, as I watched with anticipation...and shortly after I took the wheel...I ripped the transmission drainplug out to end the fun early...hehe. That being said, it went back in the shop for a quick pan drop, a few minutes with the welder and it was back in action with plans for a skidplate to cover the front section that had never been in jeopardy before. I would also like to thank Greg, Scotty, Harry who at some point were there to address some of the many problems my ideas created...haha. Here are some pictures of the initial run. The first real rides with be this weekend with SC and FTR, so those will follow early next week...
In the rocks...

OkLaHoMaYJ 03-18-2009, 03:00 PM What transmission did you swap in?
^^^whats the story behind the leaking ATF?
Bushwhacker 03-18-2009, 06:05 PM Nice build...Better plate those knuckles or go with the Dedenbears before they break.
jbdbloh7 03-18-2009, 06:33 PM What transmission did you swap in?
^^^whats the story behind the leaking ATF?
It is a factory Jeep automatic, I will have to get back to you on the model number, but it is the correct one for this model jeep from the factory.
As far as the leaking pan, before the stretch there was another skidplate that protected the trans/oil pans. The new build did not allow for the old plate to be re-installed. I was not expecting that as a problem, which it definately was... but not to worry...Bob to the rescue. I pulled and cleaned the pan, he welded it back up, I re-installed and it was back in the rocks within hours. And he has already installed a new skid to prevent the same mistake twice...haha
Canyonmann 03-18-2009, 09:21 PM Looks great so far, I think almost everyone could go back and look at their builds and regret buying something or building something a certain way. It's not really until someone gets to the finally putting 60's underneath and realize that spending all that money trying to make a D30 survive is a waste  Let's see more!
I started with 33's and dana 44's, 37'sw and then 42's and 60's. I think we all do that maybe next year ill build a buggy. Dont sweat it. The build looks great! It will be a very capable good looking rig:)
jbdbloh7 03-19-2009, 02:44 PM Thanks - I did that as well...Fortunately I was able to sell most of the stuff when I moved up to bigger items for enough to warrant the changes. I will be putting it through it's paces this weekend for sure... I am working on mounting the rear winch, measuring for limiting straps and making plans for the bump stops...I will also be carefully watching the coilover spring rates as I doubt they are correct for the application based on weight...
Skooter_Built1 03-19-2009, 03:52 PM sorry i didnt see this anywhere, but am i to guess your Jeep runs on unicorns & magic dust? What are you running for a tank? In cab unit?

Thanks boss...I thought I mentioned it, hell I even pimped his company in my signature. Today I got my aluminum toolbox for the back, recieved word from UPS that the dual Optima tray from Ken at KORE is coming in Monday. A few more things and I will call this bitch done...for now! My buddy Scotty is putting together a slick dual battery setup for my dual winches and in cab controls. Those should be done in the next week or so!
wildbroncobilly 03-20-2009, 03:12 AM Now you'll just have to build a bigger trailer for it to move it:D
jbdbloh7 03-20-2009, 05:35 AM Now you'll just have to build a bigger trailer for it to move it:D
Nope - got it covered. I made a trade with one of my buddies already. The new trailer is at the shop ready for duty. It is an 18ft with a full deck and a beavertail and 15inch wheels/dual elec brake/dual axles... I just need one nice day to cut some misc things off it, add some new lights and some BSOR stickers!
jr2323 03-21-2009, 06:14 AM Nice looking build!
I really like that cage did you build it or did you purchase it?
I want something very similar in my YJ and was wondering if you had a bend tech file you would like to share
Thanks john
jbdbloh7 03-23-2009, 07:20 AM Nope - it was not bought technically. It is an original factory cage (B and C pillars) with an A pillar through the dash, all three are tied to the frame and there are several spreaders (One on each) and some a couple extra for style (read - protect the speaker pods) and they were all done by some of my club members at a tech day for NE4Wi after I rolled it onto the roof one winter... I had some additional mods added by the guy (John M) who built the bumpers and rocker armor and rear tire carrier. If I had a file, I would give it to you. If you want some more pictures, pm me and I will see if I can either find some, or take some more for you.
switched 03-23-2009, 07:33 AM The jeep looks awesome! I stopped by awhile back to pick up those H1s from the Protector guy next to Bob's shop (his name escapes me at the moment, sorry), and came over to check your jeep out. That thing is killer man! I can't wait to see it in action.
jbdbloh7 03-23-2009, 07:41 AM Thanks much...Scotty is his name. We had it out this weekend to the Gutter and Ma Bell. It was pretty much point and shoot. I do need to get on the front axle for a locker next though. I am going to order one this week from BSOR and have Bob put it in... my only regrets are about the tow rig. I miss my excursion, the tundra just plain brings the suck by comparison...
MTMudpuppy 04-05-2009, 06:44 PM updates or pictures from wheelin????
jbdbloh7 04-05-2009, 08:45 PM updates or pictures from wheelin????
A few...one a side note, I ditched the Tundra for a better tow rig. It pulled fine, but the stopping power was just not there, it weighed a little less than the rig on the trailer...so I upgraded to a F350 Superduty :)
Now a couple of shots...this was the break in run...
Can you tell I am fawking happy as hell to be behind the wheel?

For all the trouble that this custom modified "kit" came with, I cannot complain about the clearance that it brought to the table...Thanks Bob, your efforts, attention to detail and just plain old fucking skills were worth every minute and dollar. Nuff said.
http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff209/jbdbloh7/Gutter%20March%2009/SummitCrawlersRattlesnakeGutter3-30.jpg
Sadly, these shots do not do justice to the terrain, as it was fairly difficult, however that does not prevent my camera shy rig from giving a nice shot of the front axle unloading for your pleasure...which reminds me, I have to get my winch repaired since the brake seems to not be working, hence you can see the line connected to my axle is slack.

jbdbloh7 04-20-2009, 08:57 PM A nice trip out west this weekend netted some fun times. Weather finally cooperated. Still lots of little things that need attention, but overall I am definately happy to be driving than riding bitch...now I gotta get back to work so I can afford a fawking front locker...haha...although this was a pretty tough spot, locked in the front or not...

Thanks...it is coming along...the more that gets done the more I seem to need new things...hehe...
Those beadlocks were from HBRK aka Hill Bill Rock Krew also known as Shane and Pepper. And yes, they looked cool...but they brought the suck in the holding air department. They stopped making them even before I got my complete order they were so lousy. I ordered five, they backordered one and I had to work on two of the original four to keep them holding air. Whoever they had welding them must have taken classes in Mexico while drinking the water... I actually think they are no longer in business...
moab_nate 04-22-2009, 08:36 AM Thats a bummer. Maybe ill just design my own with that pattern! thanks for the details.

jps4jeep 04-02-2010, 08:18 AM I know it was listed for sale locally couple months back, not sure why he's selling. My guess is he traded it in because it appears to be in florida now (unless he moved to florida)
Surferpunk12 04-03-2010, 05:27 PM Yup, saw it the other day for sale when one of the guys I work with said that he saw the sickest jeep he's ever laid eyes on for sale in vero. Amazing fab work. You living down here? I'm in PSL and work at the Coast Guard station in Fort Pierce. Sad indeed but nowhere to really wheel around here except Hardrock in ocala.
jbdbloh7 11-16-2010, 08:55 PM True, it was sad to see it go...it was a desperate attempt to salvage a marriage doomed to fail anyway. That being said, all is not lost. In a strange twist of fate, another was built just before mine in almost the same manner by one of my good friends, using the same fab guy, undoubtedly the best in all the region. And I just made a deal with the devil to secure the jeep...It is slightly smaller, still on 44s, but not missing any of the details, it rides on 37inch Krawlers/Walkers and sick as hell. I am planning on finishing it up over the winter, with another build thread to follow. And who knows..with no wife to inhibit this build, I might just throw a set of matching steering axles under it and 47s...only time will tell. If anyone has information on the whereabouts of my old jeep, post up. I would not mind seeing what has become of that labor of love.
TJBuck 11-26-2010, 06:57 PM So Cory, when are we gonna get details/pics on the new rig? I've checked, summit, FTR, BSOR sites and NOTHING, suspense is KILLING ME! You might just get me motivated to get myself building another one....:smokin:
