OK so got my new job and i think that i have decided to go with ford as my new truck as aposed to dodge w/cummins. Now i want a 98 or newer f250/350 with a v10. but i'm kinda dumb when it comes to the newer trucks, i've never indulged myself in the depths of the problems and perks.

I would also like to get this truck in an automatic so i need to know what to look for when shopping for this truck, or should i say what to look out for. i will be using it to tow my old daily driver witch is the truck that you will see discribed below all of my posts. so will this auto tranny that ford has distributed with all thier trucks hold up the abuse of the long mile 8 to10 thousand lb pulls or will it go out on me prematurely. should i go with a standard tranny? all stories are encouraged, i neeeeed to know as much as possible so i do not buy a piece of crap.

ohh and one other thing, i thought that the new body style came into affect in 98, so why can't i find any lifts for the 98, thier all 99's. like i said i don't know mutch at all about these trucks so please help me make a good decision.

Plans for the truck include, propane, 8"lift, 37" tires on 17" rims, dual flowmaster and and slew of run of the mill add ons(nerf bars,cd,subs, bedliner, bumpers, winch, lights, ect.)

thanks for all the help in advance and please any and all little tid bits and four page stories,I WANT THEM ALL!!!!

ps here is a poll

i don't know man my boss had has his 99 break down twice already. not real impressed with that, nad not real impressed with the life of the PS either only 250k max if your lucky, now of three Cummmins that have over 350k and still running one has over 400k. and no problems to report.

kinda hard to justify that now isin't that.

really, why don't you like the auto tranny? had some troubbles with it? the guys that i know have the auto, except one that i don't really know. but you really like the auto huh?

how common are they, sticks are all i have ever owned so driving one isn't a problem just finding one at the right price.

If you are wanting a V10, why would you want propane....granted you can convert a gas engine to run off propane, but why? If you do end up with a Diesel, then you can go propane injection. Also if you get a PowerStroke, I would recomend a chip and exhaust....two buddy's with identical '01 F-350 4x4 extra cab ps 6 speeds, one has a chip and cut off muffler towing 36,000 GVWR can walk away from a the other (all stock), towing 34,000 GVWR.

Also, it has been my experience that towing extensive heavy towing with the ps tends to go through clutches faster than normal.....same buddy with stock '01 is near the 75,000 mark and is on 3rd clutch and 4th preasure plate. Another is a work truck with 145,000 and is on its 6th clutch. Granted these trucks see heavier than normal loads hauling tractors and construction equipment. So just towing a 4x4, I don't think you'd have much truouble.

welli wantedto run a propane injection on the gas motor because i read in the last month issue of petersons they were getting 24.2 miles to the gallon!!! pretty kick ass huh, especially froma motor that puts out 425+ lb feet of tourq.

i do not like the ps they burn oil, dodn't last as long as the cummins and i go to my previous statement, if v8 diesels were a good idea then they would be in semi trucks, whats in semi trucks............. Inline 6 cylinder, just do not like the ps.

I personally like both styles of motors, but as far as v-8 Diesels in semi-trucks.....ever hear of a little company called Detroit Diesel? They produce several, including the 8V71 which has been around for years. And is where the origonal design for blowers came from.

good, more for me and my buddies....I guess if milage is your only concern, then your numbers are good. From personal experience watching a 2x4 dodge with 4.10 gears pull a load of rock with a gvwr of around 28,000 pounds strain and not be able to get above 55 mph and have to stay in 4th gear. Then watch a 4x4 powerstroke with 4.10 gears pull a bigger trailer with three tractors weighing in at over 37,000 GVWR cruise down the interstate in 6th gear at 70 mph. Now you tell me which has more power? Lets say even in modified form, you still only have 359 cubic inches compared to 444. I used to be gunho Cummins....and I still think they are great motors and wouldn't turn one down if the price is right. But after seeing a Powerstroke do what I have and been around them at the dealership I used to work for, if I had my choice I would buy a powerstroke.

But, this is my opinion based on personal experiece....and I know that everyone else has there opinions as well....take it for what its worth.
