We just put 8" under the xj and on the first drive around the block I noticed a nasty popping sound under braking conditions.
It seems to be coming from the driver rear side of the truck. Lugnuts are tight, everything is tight. I can't even begin to gues wtf it is. Any wild ass guesses?

HMM Might be the E brake cable streched over the top of the Muffler.

I know mine has issues in that department.

I need to figure out a e brake line I can swap in.

Every fawking trail run I go on my E brake cable works my exhaust sytem loose.

Try a pair of YJ passenger side e-brake cables.

I put a pair (from a 95 YJ) on my 94 XJ. Very long. As a matter of fact, I've tied mine up. Some folks have crossed them over.

Exhaust runs down the passenger side and the sound seems to be on the dr. side. I thought the same thing at first. I also checked to make sure it wasn't catching on the yoke or some crap.

HMMMM

Might be a Binding Ujoint

Coming from the drivers side because thats the side you drive from.

What year is this XJ?

Might be because it is a cherokee.:D Get used to it, they all pop.

XJ is a 91. Coming from the driver side because when my fat ass was layin across the back seat hangin out the damned passenger door w/ my my head under the truck I coldn't really hear it but when I hung out the drivers rear door the sound was prominent :flipoff2: (Gawdamned runon sentences!) Seriously though I believe it is much louder on the driver side when I performed the above described "professional tech inspection".
I also was just thinking of the bind u-joint thing. When braking does the pinion dive or rise? I'm having trouble picturing it right now.

Well If the pinion travels up during acceleration I would guees it wants to travel down under braking.

You have an SYE on this vehicle? 8" is too much without one, i'll bet the ujoint is binding as someone else stated. Or the slip yoke is about to fall out.

Also..is the centering pin indexed correctly?...ubolts nice and tight?

Oh and the pinion wants to dive down during braking..up when accelerating.

it could be the metal sleeve in the bushing. I tightened all my bolts when the jeep was in the air and some of them were sticking. Try loosening them, lowere XJ to the ground, then tighten them........just a thought.

Which sleeve in which bushing? Their a few of them. In regards to the sye...no not yet. I'm still trying to find one for a 242. This was the first "slow" trip around the block since gettin the thing together.

You need to get the slip yoke. I had the same problem the first time I drove mine. The u joint close to the transfer case binds under braking. When I droped my transfer case a little, the binding went away.

Yea you NEED a SYE...I guarantee the popping will be gone after that. :D

Currie makes one. I think it is either 200 bucks or right under.
