I have a chance to buy an unmolested 1903. Is it worth $400? Complete down to the correct sling.

That all depends on what 1903 it is...I have one worth over 2K

its a 1903 Mark I...it will accept a peterson device.

Yes.

If it is indeed in original conifg it could be worth much more, depending on what it is....

Here you go. It shows the rifle, the model, the Peterson device ejection port, and the over all condition of the action...

Is it a two groove, or four groove barrel?

Have a friend who is an idiot. He had an 03 mark 1 with the Pedersen cutout. Even after I told him not to do anything to the rifle due to its value, he had a god awful ugly synthetic stock put on it and had it rebarreled for 6mm Remington.

Nice rifle you have

Wow...You should have told him how many MarkIs that they did not make. I am pretty sure that they only made them from Jan 1919 to March 1919, then they ditched the Peterson device project.

I tried every method I could think of, including offering him twice what he paid for the rifle (he paid $250 for it) as well as offering to buy him a rifle in the 6mm remington chambering he wanted.

Like i said though, he was an idiot and just had to show me he could have a "custom" rifle made.

As for the person claiming to have a Pedersen device, please please post pics of it. Every reference I have of the actual device states that all models and production pieces were destroyed. Just to see a pic of one would make me happy.

dumb question but wtf is a peterson device?

It is a device designed to replace the bolt in a specially designed Springfield 1903 (Mark I). It allows the rifle to fire semi-auto from a vertically fed magazine, it used a propitiatory straight wall .30 caliber pistol cartridge similar to the 30 carbine cartridge but shorter.

If your Springfield was drilled for a scope mount, then figure the price in the 250, 275 price range. Pics of scope mount? Also, I have never seen an original 1903 in anything else but a 30-06

They were originally chambered in 30-03, however I have never seen nor heard of one existing today.

There DOES just happen to be an O3A4 (O3A3 is the more common type) variation that was set up with a scope for sniping by Springfield on the git go... ;) :D

The one "custom" rifle I own was made off of a 03A4 action and barrel. Don't kill me for destroying a valuable version of the rifle. It was done before I was given the rifle, and since the guy was giving it to me I didn't feel it was right to criticize him to much over it.:flipoff2:

It happens... and the collector types freak out over it but I dont as a rule cuz Im as guilty fer sporterising old mil surp as any. I'd bet $ to doughnuts that the majority of surplus stuff ends up being sporterised to 1 level or another, more so with WWII stuff purchased when I was a kid just beginning to shoot than now. Then M98 mauser, Springfield, Endfield and Moisen actions were a dime a dozen and only went fer $18-25 in NRA excellent condition (still cosmoline packed), not like some of the mismatched junk being palmed off at shows fer $200+...

I knew about the 03A4 (My dad actually carried one for awhile), I was meaning if someone had the rifled drilled and tapped.
However, I had forgotten about the early 03's shooting a 30-03 round.

03A1 also came with a scope... a really wierd, fubar scope.

What's the serial # and condition of this '03? Most '03's in decent shape will easily bring $400+, and some can get into the thousands. Be aware that under serial # 800,000 for Springfields, and 300,000 for Rock Islands may have a brittle receiever and better serve as wall hangers than shooters.

The one I found is in the 3.2 mil range. And it is a Springfield. It looks like it came out of long term storage. Hardly any marks on it. Nice and tight action.

Well worth it IMO, if it has a small star at the tip of the barrel it is very desirable for the better steel content "worth alot more money". It is also hard to find one in very good condition, harder if all original. These guns were torn apart in the field and parts being swapped around with others during reassembly was common.

Yes its been sold. Its now in a very nice private collection in TX instead of a vault in CA. I will never say how much..:bounce2::eek:, who, what, where as per our agreement. We are both VERY highly satisfied, thats one thing I will say and nothing else.

It's in Claremore, I used to work at the Little Ceasar's right down the street.
Judging from the pictures in this thread and the pictures of the displays on their site I'm guessing that the picture is from there.

for these things to be so rare, why does it seem that there are several hundred scattered across the USA in various museums and private collections up for show in the intardweb, not to mention how many are out there that are not easily found in a google search.
so how many are there? 500? 750? some museum in France has a large pile of them in a display along with like 30 magazines and hundreds of boxes of ammo...

for them to bring $50-65K each there sure are a lot of them out there.
