It's a Musso, a SsangYong Musso. I'll admit that I'm a web wheeler, and I think that the mystery vehicle is made by Daewoo. I used to see those things when I was in the Dutch Caribbean. Here's a link, the tail lights are a little different, but you know how that stuff goes.

tuckster is right, the first pic shows a musso, good eye.
proof?? you want proof?? ok look at the lead car in the second pic, same car, dont beleive?, you can check the plate yourself. the musso has a telltale drop in the bodyline at the front window.
the second car in the second pic is not a landcruiser, it is in fact a brother to the cruiser called a prado.
the third pic shows, in order, a red 70 series landcruiser swb, the prado again, and a dark grey or black hi-lux crew cab.
so what do i win??

Right about the Musso ! I had one as company car for about 3 years. Talk about Dana 44's front (IFS) and rear, Borg-Warner tranny and Mercedes engines. Not bad, but butt-ugly :flipoff2:

to the best of my knowledge, the prado has never been badged or called a landcruiser. there are also different models of prados, i think they fall between the 4 runner and landcruiser, they are available with a 4 banger or v-6 motor, the landruiser doesnt come with those.

The white one (the X5 M5) is actually a SSanyong Musso a korean vehicle that is rebadged as a Mercedes in some countries, the silver one is a toyota prado and the red one is a toyota fj 70 series they aren't available in the north american market

90 series landcruiser :
or 3dr / 5-dr Prado : vehicle code : xxJ90xxxxx / xxJ95xxxxx
I guess the J makes it a land cruiser. Not to mention the landcruiser badges we have here in Europe. (In the UK if I remember correctly it's called colorado or something like that, and in switzerland, it's called a 300-series landcruiser.)
No a poser rig for sure, but the IFS appears to be a bit weak...
The one pictured here must be a post -1999/2000? model year, from the different design of the front bumper and the taillights...
As for the engine : ??? 1KZ, 1KD, 5L, 3RZ, 5VZ series engines... ???

The red one is a light-duty (coiled, 8.25") 70 series from the front grille. It should have either an L-series engine 2.4D making it a LJ, or a R-series RJ. (Most probably an LJ73, from what appears to me as the famous yellow & brown TURBO decal on the door. An FJ would have to be the HD leaf-sprung 70 series, which has a different longer and narrower nose, with the blinkers separate on the sides.

And here comes the best part : both the red and the silver ones ARE PRADOS ! Yes, now I remember the light-duty 70-series were already called prado in Japan or sumwhere. Which makes the red one an early early prado, and the silver one a late late model prado :flipoff2:

SSangyong was an independant Korean maker, in wich MB had shares in. Later, it was bought over but Daewoo. I'm not sure but it may still have Merc. mechanicals in it...
I even have a Ssangyong polo, which may become a collector, huh ?

The Prado is a LandCruiser, i know because my dad owns one. It's a KZJ 90 for the short wheelbase and KZJ 95 for the long wheel base (both diesels) there is also a 4 banger and a 6 banger gas engine. Those are VZJ and RZJ 90 series. The diesel engine also came in the KZJ 70 series.

Come over here, plenty of'em. It's a lot better than an oversized sami, though. It's coil sprung, rides like a car onroad, and just like one of the best stock landcruisers off-road :flipoff2:

It's the first one I see in red actually, looks good !

thanks, thats great info for me on the prado. i have always liked them but not having it here leaves me with little info on it. most of my info came from british sources, maybe they dont get all the options as some other countries and thats why i didnt even know it had a deisel option. now if they would just import the prado here, i like them better than the 100 series.
no wait now i remember, they had a 3L deisel option too. but still all smaller engines, is the body physically smaller than a regular 80-100 series cruiser?

Stupid frnch jackasS
08-17-2002, 07:29 AM
Rhino,

The most popular engines for the Prado at least here in europe are the 4cyl. 3 L turbo diesel K series. The 1KZ-T(E) makes 125hp and the 1KD-FTV 165hp.
Very good car both on &off-road, very comfortable, lightweight (@~1800 kgs), fair towtruck. I've heard quite a lot of issues with the mechanicals, especially the front drivetrain, but those must have been beaten up. My dad's KZJ90 has not had any issue yet within its first 110000km or something. ('xcept for 1 clutch job)

And yes it's definately (a lot) smaller than the 100 series. definately cheaper, too...
The 100 series doesn't have a 3L diesel option AFAIK. The diesel is the 4.2L 6cyl turo diesel 1HD-FTE which makes 204hp. But given the weight of the truck, and the autobox, the one I've driven definately lacked oomph. But hell that thing is comfortable

stupid french, thats excactly why i thought the prado was a prado and not a cruiser,,everything i have read has described it as smaller, lighter and a whole different drivetrain, plus i never saw a cruiser badge on anything i read. but what really matters is we all know nothing beats the venerable toyota rigs, weather its cruiser or not.
i sure whish we had more deisels here, i would love a modern deisel in my cruiser.

nolen, we may get the prado here, but i'm sure it will be way overpriced.

i dont like the 100 series too much, and i guess i like the prado mostly cuz it has alot of the 80 style, with the big flares and such. but i cant afford a new rig, so i'll be passing on the prado when they do sell it here. besides it doesnt have solid axles anyway.

Stupid frnch jackasS
08-17-2002, 11:24 PM
OK, you probably won't have the prado in its current form. Its said that it will be replaced soon by some more SUVed car, maybe unibody and IRS, which will be sort of an update of the lexus RX300... :barf:
Ya know mitsubishi's turning :rainbow: with the pajero, and toyota must do the same as ususal :mad3:
There's just not enough market for the real utility skilled 4x4s anymore.

And this time, it probably won't deserve the LC badge any more at all, cause it's going to suck big time off road. :(

Bye,

RHINO
08-18-2002, 07:35 PM
yeah well i guess its not just the USA that gets panzy ass 4x4's, there is really nothing left to buy with a real drivetrain that you can actually wheel. i couldnt believe that toy wussed out the cruiser lineage with the 100 series.
i guess it doesnt matter that i cant afford a new 4x4 since none are really worth buying.
