is it the old "amp" guage? if so the alt/charge wire goes threw the firewall to the gauge then back to the batt. Check it at the firewall is probly burnt up.

Slipping belt, bad grounds, broken wires, maybe a bad new parts just cause they're new doesn't mean they work.
You may also have a bad power draw somewhere. When you hook your battery up if your notice a small spark, you probably have a power draw somewhere.
How many volts are you seeing at the alternator when running...and how many volts are you seeing at the battery when running? Check it again with all the accessories on.
Edit: Maybe a fusable link..but you'd find that when you check for continuity

tbone420 do you mean the wire off the alt the goes into the plugs on the firewall??

z77z77z belts fine when i disconnect the batt terminal while its runnin it shuts off does that eliminate bad draw i redid the truck 6 months ago i went over all the wires and everythign was fine another guy told me grounds i have the battery relocated in the bed beacause i have a flip front end. i have the batt grounde to the frame in the back then i have it from the frame to the block up front, and i added one from the frame to the cab do i need others am i missing one??? thanks for the help

on my old 76 the amp gauge was part of the circut. so if the wire is burnt any where charge voltage wont get back to the batt. To see if the alt is working....put a meter on the output lug of the alt...if it charging there and not at yer battery, chase the wire down.

if you disconnect the battery and it dies, it definatly points to the alternator/charging circut. I'd check that you have 13-14v's coming from the alternator when its running. Other than that if you haven't got wiring diagram i'd get one and start checking for bad wires.
On a side note i just got done chasing a brake light that wouldn't work. I had voltage going to it, but everytine i pluged my light bulb in the voltage went away, went through a pack of bulbs trying to figure it out. Eventually i traced it back to a connector. The wire going into the conector was corroded and hanging on by one nasty green strand. It had enough of a connection to give a voltage reading on the multimeter, but once load was applied it couldn't keep up. It was really frustrating. Just thought that may give you another idea to look at.
I have the same problem with my 77 M880, and Ive traced it to a few areas. The voltage meter wasn't drawing that much, and neither was the dome light with no door switch. It was the electronic choke hook up, and there was a wire that goes from the alt. to the firewall, and splits off into the battery but also has a dead end plug on it. Still can't figure out where this bastard goes.

definitely sounds like a charging system issue. checking for proper voltage at the alternator is a start, but you need to make sure its kicking out proper amperage as well. ohm out your charge back wire. if it checks out, take your alternator back and get a new one.
