: a build for a buddy of mine..
twoslo4five0 12-24-2008, 01:17 PM here is the deal..i have a 92 dodge dakota that aint worth nothing..still runs good and drives good but im not gonna get anything out of it selling it so i told a good buddy of mine that if he helps me build it ill let him wheel it...if he enjoys it he can buy it from me for what i have in it...i have a chevy truggy i wheel so i dont need it but he really wants to come wheeling and i want him to..here is how the truck sits not..i no nothing about theese trucks and dont really see a whole lot of info on them here...
92 dakota
2.5 4 cyl
2wd
5 spd
it doesnt have to be fast just be able to crawl
so im thinking about getting a divorsed 205 and a junked out toyota and using the axles out of it since there is so much aftermarket support for them..ill stretch the rear and the front and it will be on leafs...
this is a simple build and hopefully a cheap on so he can buy it if he wants to...any info yall can give me on where to go or what to do would be greatly appreciated

superswamper_800 12-24-2008, 03:17 PM Shit if you wanna keep it cheap and simple you pretty much got it. Run what ever leafs you got and sence its a 4 cyl. Id run the yota axles stock with 35's or Longs with 39.5's and then either run the divorsed 205 or find a 4wd tailshaft housing and a new driveside drop t-case. Personaly Id fab up a mount for the 205 and run the yota or a 12bolt/D44, lock it up and you would be good to go.

I like your idea of helpin out your buddy, I was in the same boat as he is for the longest time riding shotgun in my buddys rigs, Nothin wrong with that, but odviusly its more fun to drive.
twoslo4five0 12-24-2008, 06:53 PM we did a lil looking tonight
i have a set of half tons (12 bolt and 44) outta my truck when i went to tons...the 12 bolt has a lockrite and the 44 has flat tops and warn premo's...so i have the axles the only down side is they are 3.73s but im thinking 35s is the biggest we are gonna go (well now at least :smokin:)
now my biggest 2 questions are the engine crossmember and what to do about the steering..the truck has rack and pinion right now i dont really wanna drop the bucks for full hydro but it looks like thats the easiest option..that crossmemeber is huge...
the good things about the truck is it already has tbi and a boxed frame and a decent approach angle right now...this truck has been on the scales before and i think it was 3500 lbs..id like to keep it around 4000 when its all done (thats without the cage)...this really has me thinking
plus it would really help me out cause it would be more like a team (sounds gay i know) but he would help me id help him and it would make working a whole lot more fun and easy seeing as i have some back problems
philadelphia 12-25-2008, 02:43 PM Chuck the 12 bolt in the trash..Get yourself a better axle like a 9 1/4. or at least a furd 9" to get bolt in axles.
Dont plan on a 4 banger to work with low range and 73s..if it were me id run some 1/2 tons as you planned but get some steeeeeep gears.
Steering can be easy as fabbing a mount and running a steering box.and then cross over

id like to at least run the 12 bolt for now since its free and locked and matches the front...neither axle need work they are ready to go...gear redution will be made up in the t case...dont really know where we are going with the t case right now...
im still reserching trying to figure out info on the trans.im trying to figure out if it is the same trans that came in the 4 banger jeeps...if so id just swap that trans over to mine and that would make it simple for all the tcase options (i belive)
any idea what this trans is in this truck?
Bajabomber87 12-25-2008, 03:08 PM Get some 1 tons and save yourself time and money.

i have 1 tons under my truck..this is a super cheap build seeing as how my buddy doesnt have a whole lot of money...this is just to get up and going...its only gonna run 35s if he wants tons later then he can get them...the next set of tons i buy are going in a buggy
I like the 12/44 option. It will be a clutch smoker unless you can get at least 4:1 in the case though... Might be simplest to find a TJ/YJ tranny and 231 and get a set of Teras for it...
twoslo4five0 12-26-2008, 01:42 PM exactlly what i was looking for...the yj trans bolts up to my bell housing?
NO idea, but I suspect someone knows....
I thought the 4 cyl Jeeps were Mopars, but perhaps they were Iron Dukes?
twoslo4five0 12-26-2008, 03:31 PM i think i read that the 2,5 in my truck was the same offered in the jeeps...not sure on that but i hope its right
willy05tj 12-26-2008, 05:00 PM where are you located? i have a 9 1/4 / d44 combo with 4.11's locked front and rear only down fall is they are under a fulltime 4wd (non lockout hubs)

should be an ax-15 (not 100% sure)
hy_desert_4wheeler 12-26-2008, 06:11 PM should be an ax-15 (not 100% sure)
Actually it should be NV a525 IIRC
willy05tj 12-27-2008, 04:18 AM thats why i said not 100% sure.
