Finally got all my crap organized, filed, and labeled, thought I would post some pics. The cabinets are all craigslist and auction scores. The blue cabinet contains grade 5 and misc hardware (came with labels already on it). The labels on the gray bin cabinets were created in indesign, printed on an inkjet printer and cut to fit (just plain paper, they slip into a label holder on each bin). Still need to redo the labels on the drawer cabinet. The masking tape and sharpie labels just ain't cutting it anymore.

You're not kidding. I don't know exactly how many hours I have into this, but I would have to guess pretty close to 50.

I'm super jealous. That's badass! I scour CL all the time for those things and rarely come across them.

the blue cubby bin came with the remnants of a grade 5 assortment, plus I put whatever crap I had in there. I have a secret family hookup for fasteners now, but before then I would go to fastenal if I needed more than a few. Their published prices are terrible, but if you go in there you can beat them up a bit and get a much better deal. Make nice with the manager, and order in person, not over the phone.
onsy twosy stuff was at ace. the ace around here has a gigantic selection, but expensive.

Nice job of 5S'ing!
5S is a philosophy and a way of organizing and managing the workspace and work flow with the intent to improve efficiency by eliminating waste, improving flow and reducing process unreasonableness.
The 5S's are:
Sort
Shine
Set in order
Standardize
Sustain
The last 'S' is the hardest!

What I did I do with my old tool box, turned it into bolt storage. I bought a nice big Snap On box and needed to do something with the old box, it worked out perfectly.
Pic of new box setup, old box setup, and then hardware in it.

More drawers full of grade 8 and other hardware. Last pic is of old storage setup in shelving.

Very nice. I prefer the fully enclosed drawers (beggars can't be choosers though) because they don't get full of dust and other garage crap like the open bins do. I guess it really doens't hurt the bolts though, so not the end of the world.

good job... I have a open bin shelf set up with nuts/bolts and stuff.. In the past the parts store was 60+ trip to go get supplies other than the ass raping at the HD. But they just built a Tractor Supply and I find I am stocking less in the garage as their prices are reasonable. I just stock up for a project etc.. Dust/dirt on the hardware... who cares.. I save the drawers for things that need to stay clear or out of the way.. tools,$$ stuff etc..

I need to take a pic of the bolt bins that my dad and I built... it's two 4'x8' sheets of steel against the wall (8'x8' total), and I think it's around 10" or 12" deep. If I remember right it's all 1/8th inch steel and it's got a bin every 8 inches or so. I'll have to get the exact specs. Some of the bins are divided into 4 spaces, some into two, and some arent' divided at all. The ones on top are a bit high sometimes, but we've got a stepladder there, or you can just climb on it because it's welded to the wall and isn't going to fall over on you.
We've got it full of bolts, plus many other things too. I still need to label it better though, but I just got one of those electronic label makers from Wal-mart with the metallic colored label tape for like $25. Gonna give that a try.

Nice job Alex. If I only had 50 hours to devote to such activities.
Wouldn't you know, the day after Christmas, the phone starts ringing at 0835 and the tow trucks have already started arriving.
Those of us who have to earn a living in our shops rarely have the time to be that organized, regardless of the advantages of such organization.
In five years, you'll be posting up like DRM trying to figure out how to get the kids to sort bolts!
5S-sucks! When I worked industry, my bosses were always telling me to 5S my office! One of them would have another heart attack if he saw my shop!

As I see it, I don't have much of a choice but to be super organized.... That and my OCD won't let me do it any other way.
My garage is a little smaller than a standard 2-car job, and I have a lot of stuff. Every wall except the one with the garage door on it is lined with stuff. workbenches, toolboxes, shelves, cabinets, etc. The long wall has a steel rack in the middle, shelves above that, storage for plate steel, etc underneath. opposite wall has a large disc grinder, drill press, work bench, toolbox, compressor... and then there's the wall in the pics above... bins on one side of the man door and a big roll-cab on the other with kitchen cabinets hung above it. I can hardly tell what color the walls are.
I want a bigger shop.
Edit: here's a descent shot of the whole thing. the far wall with the dartboard is where the parts and fastener bins are now.
