: 14 bolt ratio... (yes I searched first)
kymudhunter 12-25-2008, 06:05 PM I have read the entire 14 bolt bible, as well as several postings on the subject that i found through the search. but the only serial type number that I can find on my ring gear is..
1 GM 3997484 11 41 7 78
Just like that. I have searched as well as I could without pulling the carrier, (if it's 4.10 or numerically higher I don't have any need to pull it as of yet.) I haven't counted the teeth either, it's cold and I'm onry..... can I get the ratio off these numbers? if not where will I find the correct serial number?
Filthy McChevy 12-25-2008, 06:10 PM 11 into 41 = 3.73
olivedrabxj 12-25-2008, 06:11 PM 41/11=3.73
shit you beat me too it.....
jeep937 12-25-2008, 06:27 PM Turn the ring once and count the yoke turns.

On the fawking ring gear? :flipoff2:
Look, man, there's 4 possible numbers there. 78/7 = 11.14:1, not a very logical ratio, is it? so the alternative may be the 11 and the 41. :D
when you get all messed up is when you have two sets of numbers, like I did, that equal 4.555555 and 3.729999, then you have to count rotations. :D

11= number of teeth on the pinion
41= number of teeth on the ring gear
7= month built, July
78= year built, 1978

most of us just use common sense. the literature is stamped on the ring gear.
tacoma73 12-26-2008, 09:11 AM Now now...
Here's a guy asking for actual technical information. Let's not mess with him any more.
Your average service manual will have some little blurb about this. In addition, if you've ever looked for gears online, say at Randy's, or similar, they usually have listings w/R&P teeth counts.
I'm not sure I've seen anything in print except here breaking down the specifics of what the other numbers mean, but I've never wanted to know.

you dont even need numbers. when i first got into trucks i never even noticed those numbers on there.
just count how many teeth that are that small gear thingy in the back of the axle. then count the teeth that are on the big one with the bolts in the back of it and divide into each other that gets your answer

Hey dousch... I have commmon sense, if had read my first couple of post's you would have realized that. You can't count the pinion gears without pulling the diff on a 14 bolt.... I could have cared less about what ratio I had, but rather learn how to read the numbers.
Tacoma73, thank you for your help... post closed.
