: Box frame or build a new one?

I'm getting ready to swap a set of one tons under my 71 CJ-5 and have come to the quick conclusion that my frame isn't going to be up to it. It's solid and rust free, but it's still a little c channel frame.

I can borrow a neighbor's plasma and burn plates to box it pretty easy, but I see some guys saying they wish they had built new ones from the start. I don't want to cheap out and am trying to do it all right the first time, so will boxing be enough, or should I just get some 2x3 tubing and make a new one?

I'd prefer to keep the original frame, and save the trouble of making motor mounts, body mounts...blah blah, but if it's not going to be up to the task, I'll man up and build a new frame.

Less than a month ago the same question was asked about an older Willys... You should search for the thread and get your answers to any questions you may have.

That being said, the short answer is to build a new one, its easier.

I'll see if I can find it, thanks. I've been trying to search for info and keep coming up empty handed.

edit: found it. thanks for pointing it out.

My '73 has had a boxed frame for 7 years now, no real issues. But it keeps growing and I know I'm going to break it in two. So I bought all the steel to build a new frame. I'm not even putting 1 tons in it.

It's one of those things that falls into the "if you have to ask, just do it" categories. The new frame will be better suited for all future mods. You won't regret doing it, but you will regret not doing it.

I'll be using 2" x 4" 3/16 for my new frame.
