I have a stock 2001 chevy s10 and the 4wd keeps craping out on me. I was driving up to the mountains and the roads got slick and i put it in N then push the 4Hi button. Then it wont come on. so i stop to try 4lo. then both 4Hi and 4lo buttons flash at me. then the light on 4hi comes on but its still in 2wd. Ive had it fixed a couple time from where i bought the truck. the guy told me the last time that is was just a loose connection. Now im wondering from you other s10 guys if this is a usual problem.

check out posi lock cables ... its common for the actuator to fail

The actuator is on the long axle tube, basically in the middle of the front of the truck.

Now...why the hell are you shifting to neutral to put the truck in 4wd? I think that might be part of your problem. The axles and driveshaft NEED to be spinning to align properly so the actuator can lock everything together. It is a true shift on the fly system. Don't worry about hurting it unless you are doing something ridiculous like spinning the rear tires or trying to engage it at 90 mph. Just keep going at a normal light cruise and push the button. You MAY have to let off the gas momentarily to break the torque to the front axle, but you will feel it. Don't be alarmed if the engagement isn't instantaneous...all the parts need to align correctly for it to lock up. A few seconds delay is normal. The only time you need to put it in neutral is to shift to 4-Low and even then you aren't going to hurt anything if you inadvertently push to button going down the highway. It will stay in the last range and mode until the transmission is in neutral and the vehicle speed is 3 mph or less.

No need to thank me. Next time just read your owners manual. I assure you that ALL that information is in there. :flipoff2:
