: Pig Hunting: A Gator-Tail Story

A couple of friends of mine and I went to the marsh yesterday to try to track down some wild hogs. We saw a little bit of sign, but no pigs. What made the trip worthwhile was getting to play around in a boat with a gator-tail on it.

It's one of the new generation shallow water/mud motors. Much more powerful and versatile than the old "go-devils." There are also other brands such as Pro Drive and Go Devil's Surface Drive.

Well no, it's not cheap. But it's not much more that a similar sized outboard, and not many outboards would do what we did in the second vid without overheating, getting stuck, or even destroying the motor (I've crossed the other lake in a regular boat when it was about that shallow). We made that pass a couple of times without hurting the motor at all.

For the guy who owns it, it is his primary boat. He docks at a landing, drives down the canals to his camp, then takes the same boat into the shallow marsh to his duck blind. Without that setup, he'd have one boat to get to the camp and another boat inside the marsh with a godevil to get to the blind. Or he could use a mudboat in the marsh, but that would be even more expensive and burn a lot more fuel, more maintenance, etc.

Are they a purpose-built motor, or can they be used like a regular-purpose outboard?
