: REAL Power Steering

I blew the seal in my Celica pump for the second time at SOR :( . So, broke down and got the AGR pump from Spidertrax. Sweet and compact unit. Anyone running this with the Celica box? At 1,500 psi and 5 gpm, it should end my power steering woes once and for all (right?).

You wuss:flipoff2: I didn't have any problems with my ARMstrong steering at SOR, and the only thing leaking was me after all the beer we drank the first night.

Joking:D , I still need to get over and see that rig!! Two SOR's and we still missed each other.

Didnt find any info at Spidertrax site on the AGR. Do they sell it as a kit with a bracket and hoses or did you just buy the pump? Do you think the AGR pump could be used with my kick box?

They are coming out with a kit...but it isnt out yet. They will have a AGR Sag. pump kit and a AGR Rockram kit. Their price on AGR stuff is pretty good.

Zuk88: Come on over and bring some wrenches :D . You could help me fab up this weird bracket to mount the pump. The pulley is sooooo big, that you need to place the pump pretty high (I could use the pullet as a spare steering wheel!). It ends up way above the only convenient mounting holes in the block. This bracket is goin to be one serious hunk of redneck engineering.

lojones: Spidertrax doesn't have it on theirt site yet, but the pump is $180 and it is brand spankin new.

scwafish: If you have that metric hose end, I'll take it off your hands. I hope to get the hp hose made next week.

Right now I need a piece of 5/16" plate and don't have any laying around  . Plenty of 1/4 and 3/8 but no 5/16. It seems that two of the block taps are 5/16" shallower than the the other two I need to use. I need a piece of 5/16 to lap to another plate for the block mount. That is unless someone else has a secret bracket idea they can share

I've go two of the metric to 6an adapters at the house. No 5/16ths in stock though...try Incontrol, he's got a pretty good scrap pile going.

Scwa,
He wouldn't happen to have a front toy axle laying around would he???

Any year I guess would work, I don't know the differences between a '79- '85. As for price....the cheaper the better.:D

Thanks Rockrat. That pump is a little different than mine, but it looks like we used the same mounting holes. Yours look sweet. I take it it works great? I got mine finished. We'll see how she looks in the light of day tomorrow :D

180$ sounds a bit steep for a agr pump. I will check, but I swear I saw them for around $140 from summit. I am definitelly gonna nead one soon cause the pump I have now isn't cuttin it for my hydro unit.

His included the reservoir and the pulley, at Summit they are stripped pump bodies.

Finished the installation of the AGR pump. It is an improvement over the Celica, but the pulley is too big (it is like 6"+ dia  ). Unless you get the motor up to 1,500 rpm or so, you can't really enjoy palming the wheel. Bogging down to 500 rpms crawling, it still binds up some, but not as bad as the Celica pump. Since the crank pulley is only around 3" dia, I need either a larger crank pulley or smaller pump pulley.

Dang, I'm going to try using a caddie remote resevoir pump, along with the toy IFS box..

I'll add "find a very small pulley" to the list..

Ya, I am a bit surprised. This pump is new and puts out 150 or 200 psi more than any of the OEM stuff (500 more than the Celica), and at 5 gpm it has as high a flow arte as you could ever want. Hopefully it is just the big pulley making the pump turn too slow.

Tusker-there are a jillion pulley sizes available for that pump, should be easy to remedy.

im using the montero pump and just repluming it all aeroquip/AN on the pressure side to clean it all up. (only a pile of parts and half started pieces, at the moment) Its been a minor hastle to track down all the fittings but it will be worth it the first time somthing breaks. Im having to make/adapt to the banjo fitting but that will be the easy part once i get to it... Ill dig out pics of what i got so far, if anyones interested....

Also if the pump wasn't free id be using a summit/kercker etc.. pump. already an and the o-ring (box) fittings are cheep...

I have been talking so much with Spidertrax, they said they would see if they could set me up with a special shiny new one to match my itty bitty crank pulley. If they can't, I am off to P&P with Toymaker's pulley puller. It can wait until after this weekend. It is still better than the Celica pump, even at 1/2 the rpm's.

P.S. What happened to the vacation? Back already? Let me know about Friday.

Stupid question. Why not just yank the IFS box and pump off of a Toyota? It has no problem handling my 36s, lots of yota guys use them with 38s-40s... and you don't need to chase down optional pulleys.

Installing the IFS box is a PITA.
