couldn't find anything in the yota forum, but maybe i just suck at searching. i'm pondering buying a turbo from ebay (new, stock replacement vw passat turbo $250) to put on my rig. i know i'll need to source some parts for the install, and want to keep it affordable yet reliable. target boost will be around 6-7 to keep my bottom end alive. so who has added a turbo? any advice would be appreciated.

The factory turbo'd yotas has/had forged pistons, I'd start there

The expense in turbo's isn't the turbo itself - it's in the fuel management, manifold & exhaust). A wideband O2 sensor & reader alone will run a few hundred bucks, then you need to figure out a way to get more fuel under boost (rising rate regulator, new / re-programed ECU or other compy solution). Turbo installs on 22r have been done many times, it's a popular enough engine. Have you done a google search for toyota turbos / forums? I'm sure there's got to be one out there.

how much work would have to be put into adding a turbo to a 22 r?

Turbo nerd hit it on the spot. Also, got to think about oil plumbing for the CHRA. What type of mount you thinking? Log, semi-remote? Intercooler?

I would look at split second for any piggy back control system. The PSC1-001 is on my to buy list for my system. What size is the turbo itself compared to the donor engine of the VW? You want to find a donor that is close to your engine size and rpm range if possible. Im thinking of a turbo from a mid 80's(1985 to be exact) Chrysler Lebearon GTS(2.2 liter SOHC turbo charged, about 155 HP at the crank). Building your own system is fun! Good luck!

This may or may not help... I might be crazy but I thought that I read somewhere that 4wdtoyotaowner was going to print a write up on a 22RE turbo. If I can find where I read that I'll post a link. My guess is it's going to be a kit though, not a home-grown kit.

Kits are ok if you have no idea what your doing. But your taking the risk and trust in some one else's engineering. But I do admit, I have a hard time trusting people(Its a condition im working on). Home grown allows the owner to build a system to thier exact requirements(but takes alot of math and engineering).

It took me about 5 years of thought, 8 months of serious R&D, and about 5 weeks of custom fab work to a running system on my rig.

i did the ghetto homebuilt turbo on my 90 4runner. stock 85 22re with 210,xxx miles
stock turbo manifold and some custom riser to get the turbo up high.
i used a turbo off an 87 rx7 with a 3" exhaust.
i richened it up by adjusting the afm, then i got a set of 91 turbo eclipse injectors (440cc) from my neibor for free, and they were pissed off and didnt work worth a shit. so i went back to the stock 195cc injectios. i ran it for 3 months of daily driving until the oil seal on the turbo blew out. now im back to n/a
