I'm doing gears for a guy and this is what he brought me. I'm a little concerned myself. This is for an 8.25 in an XJ. 4.56 used gears.

looks like those teeth were filled down to get the cross pin out without removing the gear. Some guys do this with the thicker ring gears instead of notching the cross pin. It should not bother the pinion contact area of the teeth. I would see if the rusty teeth would clean up better.

Yeah I'll take a wire wheel to them before install.

Ground down on purpose? Too busy runnin 60's to notice I guess.

the only way i'd install those for him is if he signs a non-liability statement releasing you from blame.

That bad you think? I sent him the same pics. I'm not sure he saw the chipped spots. Haven't heard back from him yet.

Thats from where you have to file down a bit of the teeth to get the cross pin thingy in.

But you said something about chips but if it was just the tooth or 2 like that Id say use it.

Are they Derrick's, Steve?

Yes. The only way I see a nedd for shaving two teeth is if you want to pull/install the cross pin with out removing the ring gear. Just covering my bases/a$$.

When I first saw this thread and looked at the ring gear I thought that someone ground down one of two of the teeth to get a cross pin in and out. If its just a matter of that and not chipped and the guy your installling them for understands that hen install em. If your getting paid for the install Id have him sign something explaining that so he dosent try and poke you later.
