Just got off the phone with Nolen, went over backwards this time, wound up on his top, like a turtle.
He is in need of a hood and bib assembly, thinks he may have fawked the new $ radiator. He's still on his way home from wheelin'.....pix to come..........

We were in Nocona, Texas at a private wheeling Ranch....

Wicked place, check out my Cruiser Website-McGill's Ranch (http://www.webphotos.com/list_albums_user.asp?mi=3&smi=2&u=1000023435) and see the pictures.

We had some AWESOME rigs out there....a "Willy's" with a 454 and Rockwells and a Cruiser on 44's. Lots of other Jeeps and stuff.

Anyway, Kate was doing good....I was shaking it down and learning how to drive the automatic.

We were on a tough little climb, no more that 20 yards and about 30*, but the rock at this place crumbles under foot very easily...

We had tried 3 lines in a slow crawl and it looked like I had knocked the hard stuff down. I eased up to it and I hit it about 1/2 throttle (that's getting it with this LT-1 :)) and the next thing I know we are going over backwards.

Up until now I had NEVER had the front end come up on Kate.....I think there are some things I will miss for sure about that heavy ass 2F!

Anyway, I don't have time to make her pretty before Poteau so I am going to bang her out with a hammer and line everything up as best I can and wheel the piss out of it!

Giddy up!

Some ask why this happens to me so much, well, my answer is that I take Kate in bad places where bad things can happen.

Thanks to Rusty B for a bad ass cage , not a ding/dent/bend on it and it took the brunt of the impact......

Visit my site and check out the shots!

I shall return!:flipoff2:

Grog you are welcome to the bib I have.......I guess we should have made you some wheely bars. I have had the front tires on Yeller off, climbing several times, but I have always had a spotter wave me off before it goes too high, you know the top of 3 stage, the wall? I have a video somewhere of me crawling it, and the LF lifted, closely followed by the RF, at which time Scot Knight waved me off. SO'd 350 FJ40's are a bit light in the front compared to the 2f.............
We'll get you back rollin'.....(oops bad choice of wording), going soon.

Thanks for the offer on the bib.....JasonH is giving me one....I had a fender and apron that I traded High5 for and Skeetshooter is giving me a Hood.....

Pirate guys are freaking AWESOME!!!!!!

As for the coil and stuff, yeah, the radiator went back into it and broke it where the dist wire goes in.....I had to buy a set of $70 wires just to replace 2 of them

Also, Gunracer recommended I pull the plugs before I turn it over and it is a good thing...lot's of oil in the cylinders.

As for how it is running......I like the LT-1, I am just going to have to learn how to drive all over again with the light front and the automatic.

Check out the pictures in my album.Wheeling (http://www.webphotos.com/list_photos.asp?mi=3&smi=1&a=86391)

I agree, my cruiser was a climbing machine back in the day when I had the F engine, and the stiff SUA springs. I keep thinking, the difference in weight can't have that much affect, and that my memory of the performance at that time is just cloudy. Then I hear things like this, and realize I'm not imagining this effect...It does make you miss the extra dead weight(pun intended)up front

...Of course, I think I would fill the front tubing with lead before I go back to an F engine and manual trans:D
Good luck gettin her back in shape.

Nolen, you can get a local welder to make you a front bumper out of a section of railroad track and then throw on some tractor weights to help hold down the front; then again, the wooden block behind the go pedal is easier.
Be sure to look over the cage welds pretty closely for any cracks before you hit the trails again. It looks like the rig took a pretty hard hit. Were you sore the next day?

I need to back up a sec. I didn't mean to be nasty, read this again this morning, sorry if I was.

I have a shitload of friends that have never broken a birf, never flopped, rolled or pretzeled a driveshaft. To hear them talk they are the shit, when the truth is they don't fawkin wheel! Plain and simple, if you wheel hard you will break shit (not your junk in disrepair), snap winch cables, and roll/flop your rig. Those that are NOT at the leading edge of the game often come to the wrong conclusion about what's really happening.

That doesn't mean that we don't make regretable driving/judgement errors that result in some of the flops. I know I have, and will again.

To suggest someone less than half my age can go out (and in this thread, wheel to the extremes) and not roll, struck a nerve. It's all good!

Oh and my wife "is" cool, but she has never been wheeling! :)

woody
08-21-2002, 07:16 AM
And as Mike said when we talked the other day....we gotta get the wives out to roll our junk now!

My wife is ALWAYS in the truck when we wheel...the Pink trail in Attica is fairly difficult, if you take all the tougher lines. She "whines" when we hit the Orange "mid-level" trail to "warm up" for the weekend. Not tough enuf for her. And, the tougher the section, the more likely she's IN the rig and not taking photos. My last flop was comical...she's in the truck, and laughing as we went over, then talking smack as we sit in the seats. She was happy we finally landed on my side and not on hers!

Given the choice, she's prefer Mission Impossible every time we go...too bad that's "no longer" accessible.

mantis

This past weekend was the first time I went wheeling without my wife. It was strange.

I feel for you man....that thing went over hard....glad everyone was OK....well, except Kate.....it's good to see that the tradition of Rollin Nolen has carried over to Pirates ;-)

Something came to mind as Tim and I were headed back at the end of the day....I've wheeled with you 3 times, and you've rolled on two of those occasions.....

In all fairness, it was a lot of bad luck....after you hit the gas, the front end shot up and the rocks kicked you backwards a couple of feet....when you landed, that 60 degree angle, coupled with an auto tranny and your left rear wedged between those rocks....well, it sent you right over, landing like a ton of bricks...

On the way home, I asked Tim why you didn't dump the clutch...I don't think he found it as funny as I did ;-)

I was spotting him on Rocker Knocker in Moab, it was all my fault.......scared the crap out of me, cause the obstacle was over, I really think the rocks were pissed, grabbed the LR tire and slammed Kate.
