Alright... I'm about to call up a dood about a cruiser, and it has the
chevy 305... I was under the impression that any cruiser older
than'74 in CA was smog exempt, regardless of any modifications
including engine... would someone let me know if i'm wrong? my
bro said I was in wrong, and I wasn't gonna be an ass about it...
i'm just scared now :D...
if i could get a quick response, that'd be great....

How old does a vehicle have to be to qualify for a smog exemption?
1973 and older year model vehicles are exempt from the smog certification requirements.

my cruiser is a 74/ with a 350 i live in ca and i have to get it smogged but havent had THAT MANY problems i had a few but was able to get it smogged after only $70 finding someone that had a computer that would accept the engine label was the hardest part.

my question was is your pre '74 car/truck smog exempt if it
doesn't have the original motor?

Did you go to the DMV link? 73 and older...does not matter if you put a different engine in it...

It does'nt matter wether you have mods done to the rig or not, the smog exempt law is for 73 and older, not 74. However, I think next year some time the law should be changing again, inorder to keep up with the 25 years or older deal that CA uses. So that means that 78 and older will be the new cut off point.

I haven't found any comformation on this but I read a while back that the Smog check two reads says something like exempt vehicles have to be 73 or older until 2004 when a 30 year or older gose into effect. Like I said though that was a while ago and I haven't heard anything different until now.
Can anyone conferm the change for next year?
