In Netscape 4.7x I can't see any of the links on the top until I click over the "empty" area. The only reason I knew there were links there at all is because the cursor changes when placed over that area.

I think that problem only affects the older versions of netscape, not sure how to fix it, exept maybe advise you to upgrade your netscape.:)

Not a chance. Netscape 6.x sucks. My suggestion as a webmaster is to build a page everyone can view.

There are issues with the earlier versions of Netscape that you just cannot deal with. I maintain a huge District Court website among others, and there is one thing on the site that I can't get to work in early Netscape, it has driven me fricking crazy. Even works in Opera and ANY version of IE. Netscape sucks the big one, even the new version, it is the slowest loading program I have on my computer.

Cool site. Works great on my Netscape 6.2, which by the way I love.

Hated NS for a while, but this one rocks. Wayyyyy faster than IE5.5 which is what I was using before. Besides the fact that IE no longer works on my WinME for longer than 30 seconds without locking the PC up.

I don't mind NS at all, at least my v4.75. It does not have the security holes/issues IE does and 99.9% of the time if it works for NS, it will work for IE. That is how I build my site, much easier that way if you do not need/want all the fancy CSS stuff NS can't render.

The other option is to test for browser type and then alter the code accordingly to properly display.

Since this is what the site looks like to those with the most popular version of Netscape, you might want to make a note that your site is designed to be viewed with IE.

Only thing I dont like is the login to the forum... you need to put the proper case to log in.

Netscape is more pure W3C standard than IE. IE is Microsoft's blatant attempt to monopolize the internet through non-standard code, along with Frontpage generating non-standard, IE only code.

I'm too lazy to download it all to play with it locally, but I'm suspicious of a few things -
1. I checked a bunch of tags to make sure they are closed properly, but I might have missed something. That's usually the cause of problems where IE displays something and Netscape does not. IE will fill in non-closed tags with what it "thinks" you want. Netscape does not, it makes you write proper code.
2. Why all the SPAN tags? You could use something else just as easy for formatting.
3.Clean up your formatting, it'll make it easier to debug.
4.There's a TD tag a couple lines before the non-displaying links that has a few extra spaces in it. That might be throwing it off. It shouldn't, but woulda coulda shoulda.

There's no excuse for not making it Netscape compatible. Anything else is just lazy.

Hey, you asked for a critique! And then gave the classic "Well, upgrade your browser so you can view my page" response :flipoff2:

I give you lots of credit for actually learning HTML instead of just using FalsePage or whatever.

Are you using Notepad for editing? Ff so, go download a real editor like EditPlus or similar. They will automatically highlight tags, indent, etc.

I think your webpage looks good especially for a person that just started doing a page. Hats up to you. :D We all started the same way as far as making webpages.

You did ask for a critique correct? That is what you are going to get. Accepting a critique as a learning experience and not as criticism is hard for us all to take when it is our own personal attempt at something.

As far as the Netscape/IE compatibility: One of the first things that they teach you in an HTML class is that always work to make it versitile between the two. Do not assume that people have one or the other. Also, do not assume that people will want to see your page so much that they will get the other because they do not have the what works. Think about it. You build a page, it can only be viewed in IE. At least 30% of the people that want to view your page has Netscape. You tell them that they can basically suck it if they don't go and get IE. So that 30% may not come back to your page. Not to mention spreading the rumors for others to stray away from your page. Do you see what I am saying?

I say, keep plugging away at it. You have to remember that Lance has had this webpage for about 7-8 years now. Don't expect to be perfect in the beginning. Just do your best and you will do fine. You are definitely already in the right direction.

Please don't put a pop-up reminder on there.... I hate having to make one more click that necessary to view the page :p

Just for your info, it works fine in Opera, my favorite browser. And whoever said that the code must be wrong if not viewable in NS but is viewable in IE is partially right, but that is not always true. There are issues with early NS that are simply unsolveable, not many, but a few, I've been dealing with one of them for a few months with no success, and I'm not exactly an html neophyte.

Its not hard to code for both netscape and IE. You just need to know what works in each and in both. One of my first sites I did it looked all fawked up because I left out two tags in a Table. Just go back through your work and double check EVERYTHING. I was planning on redoing the whole site, but I found a mistake and BAM it was all better in Netscape.

O...Netscape does suck though! :flipoff2:

You did ask for a critique correct?
Yes i did, but since when is being called lazy a critique?
I mean its not a big deal, i think its funny, you get somebody on here asking for advice and somebody calls them lazy, it just doesnt make sense.
Thanks everybody though, im still working on it.
