hi,
i'm currently building a 454 to replace a 400 in a landcruiser.
Can anyone help out with a ready available cam that works well with an auto, 456 gears and 37"tyres.(i like the HMV272) by Crane
Heads im using are the 781 passanger oval port with duel springs, roller rockers,3/8 rods and 9.5:1 comp.

Also this is a duelfuel setup, lpg and premium ulp with LPG being the main fuel.
Here's a pic of the current setup.

I ran a 272 crane in my 454... If you run it rich the idle gets retarded. The idle will lope from 600-750. Under 900 RPM or so on the trail you get nothing... around 1200 it starts to pick up, but by around 1600 it's all torque... Good cam, but now I run a 292... it lopes from 600-800 when it's lean or 700-1000 when it's rich, and it won't come on until you're around 1400... and it hits hard at 2000... (ie. blow the 44" boggers into smoke on pavement)

I have Cranes dual pattern 272/284 in my 454 tow rig.It idles right at 600 with a little lope.Starts hitting hard around 1500.Will rev over 5 grand easily.Good cam and good price even came with lifters.Got mine from Jegs.Blazin:D

The SBC400 I had in a '77 K20 15 years ago didn't have any overheating problems.

Hey guys thanx, great input just what i wanted to hear.

MR4WD: ok u got me listening now and interested so some more specs on your engine would be great,ie manifold? CR,head dimentions...........tia

blazin: revs to 5k easily, schweet, r u running a stock valvetrain?

Charlo: yes its a 400 sbc and yes its a pig to keep cool in summer(30-40degC) but not impossible, a blocked by pass and 160deg Mr Gasket thermostat, drilled a few times with an 1/8th drill bit,19"flexlite fan, works wonders.........

70~K5: LOL, the radiators in those things (K20) would cool 2 400sbc's without water........lol. Seriously though 60 series LC radiatior is prolly half the size of the K20, mind you absoloutly no prob cooling a 350.

I never had the time/ money to find out how well the radiator in my LC would cool a SBC. I had it for about a year '77-'78 till it got totaled by a drunk sideswiping me. If I remember right mine was around a '71 LC

Yeah stock valve train for now.Have another 454 I need to build.Going to use the heads of that one and do some porting and new valve train.I shift right at 5000 when getting on it.This is with a stock quad off of a SB.Need to throw a bigger carb on.I get right at 10MPG with it.Blazin
