: The leftovers build

Well the time has finaly come to start my next/budget/keeper build. Im a long time toyota guy that has had an itch for a tin top zuk since my 4runner was "done". The runner was sold before my son (now 15 mths) was born and the bank account has not allowed me to do anything but research and gather a part or two here and there since.

What I have learned in that time frame is reasearch is priceless, brand loyalist are missing the big picture, patiance pays off, and without freinds I couldnt do this. Im shooting for a no budget build and meeting it very well at this point. So ill get to the specs.......

Goals;

87' TT zuk
pane'd 22r/2wd trans/6.5 zuk case
Hydro assit 2wd toy steering
2wd toy brake booster/FJ80 MC
FJ80 front axle/welded 4.10 LP 3rd/ Slee offroad mocked steering/shaved *edit* custom 80/9.5 front
IFS rear axle welded/ 4.10/2" spacers/Tacoma front disc brakes/shaved *edit* FF/disc/9.5" FJ80 rear
3 link fr/qa1 coils/bbcs shocks
3 or 4 link rear/qa1's/bbcs shocks
Cut 38x12.50 SX's/32 bolt 15x8 beadlocks *edit* wheels wouldnt fit over brakes on new axles. Prol do recenterd H1's w/ 37-38's
18-20" belly height
103-107" W/B

(I have a complete 86 2wd PU in my yard given to me by a friend:smokin:)

Didnt get pics from the begining but the zuk was a basket case. I have about 3-4 hrs in it and about 10-12 in my wheels/tires/front housing. Time is no object on this one. I have 3 kids from ages 1-6, I work full time and my wife is a full time student. It will get done when it gets done, ill work on it when I can and I wont cut corners on my work to get things done.

The start.............

I call this one "leftover" because almost everything on it will be someone else's leftovers :flipoff2::flipoff2:

That looks great, even with the budget aside. It looks like patience goes a long way with these things. It's nice to see that; as I am a college student and sometimes get discouraged with my lack of progress on my samurai. They get "done" eventually I suppose.

Patience and research is the most important part of a budget! True wisdom. My project is still a pile of parts, but I have figured out exactly what parts I need, what I want to do, how I want it done, and have planned out what order it all needs to be done in.
It looks like you know exactly what you want to do, and how to go about it. I'll be keeping an eye on this thread.

fj80 up front nice! how about the rear, it is a full floater, if you can get it i would. nice build for sure, most of the front of my build is all back yard specials. FREE parts that have been pulled off of a jeep or other toy at some time. it all works well and has only cost me my time and wire or just a few buck for bolts or something of the like.

Thanks guys. The patiance/research has been hard for me to do but I wouldnt have learned what I have if I wasnt forced to wait so long. There are still things I have put alot of r&d time in that I want to do but budget holds me back. Like going mech/assist steering instead of full hydro, 3 link instead of 4, coils/shocks instead of airshocks, and keeping the dash instead of doing a 1 off stainless with aftermarket gauges. Some if these things are still possible but highly unlikely. I will be ussing a 86-95 IFS rear w/ taco front brakes, and 2" spacers. There cheap, strong, I can carry one spare fr/rr and with spacers ill be 1" narrower than the front for better tracking

I put a couple hours in it today on demo, stripping it down to nothing to start over new. The more time I put into it the more its looking like a buggy build labor wise. I hope to have a high dollar buggy equivilant rig for pennys on the dollar.....time will tell.

Here's the arms. I may end up modifiying/beefing them instead of the slee double sheer setup....just depends on how the cards fall. Big thanks to JimboJones for the RHD Oz arm :grinpimp:

the slee stuff is great but wow there high cost! build it your self and put that cash some place that you really need it!

JJ3
12-31-2008, 04:16 PM
I wouldnt be getting it from slee, its not even close to being in my budget. My buddy's father-in-law is a cnc machinist and the arms/knuckles/pics have been dropped off with him. Ill just have to see what he says on it before I know.

I am really struggling with the mech/assist. or full hydro steering deal. I want to run full hydro and think I can do it for less than 500.00 but I have everything I need to run mech/assist......Dammit!

2slo4u
12-31-2008, 05:54 PM
on a budget build, I'd roll with assist, till you get done with the project. Reason is there seems to always be cost overruns. If you're still sporting extra dough at the end, full hydro is a simple weekend project when you have time. Sell the assist and enjoy trails either way.

JJ3
12-31-2008, 06:41 PM
Yeah the deeper I dig its obvious the fundage will be going elsewhere. The entire mech/ assist system from pump-ram should only put me out of pocket about 50-75.....theoreticly ;) So the cost (or lack there of) should over run the headache of fitting it all in. Honestly the assist will be fine performance wise, I just want full hydro for ease of installaton and I want to run 4-links FR/RR.

I spent a few more hours stripping it down today. Only plan to keep the whippers, heater, dash pad, steering colum/wheel. Evrything else is gone, seperated what I will/may keep out and trashed the rest. Prol 100lb of plastic/wires, brackets/bolts. Found more rust too, LOTS of repair work ahead. I really want to get the body off the frame to get all the caner out but I have to borrow a engine hoist to do so and im waiting on that.

I'll post some pics when there is something worth looking at.

Alright I think it sucks to be in your shoes and having to figure out such a task with no budget. From our shoes its fun and awesome because its a challenge So do me a favor because my brain's already spinning trying to figure this out too. Go back up to your goals list at the top and list how many of those parts you currently have. Give us all a list of parts you have and the one you do not yet. As far as full assist and mech assist its a tossup there. Hoses and fittings add up fast either direction. Nuts, bolts, metal, fittings, etc will nickel and dime this build and sneak up on you. As far as a motor is concerned I'm going to say good choice on the 22r paned. We should be able to find one of those for a good price. Its a great motor just no EFI which the pane cures.
So just think about this for a second if you build in stages you don't suck the budget dry. But you don't want to redo anything twice that would cost significantly to change it right? If you don't get it up and running at some point and drive it a little you will lose inspiration and become sick of working on the thing. So to my point lets get engine and drivetrain in. You have the hardest part and that is a good front axle to work with. Usually you waste a lot of money on a shitty front just to pay to swap and rebuild another one later. Lets leave this thing on leaf springs and do the links and suspension very last. I would recommend coils and shocks if your on a budget. With airshocks your going to need access to shock oil and a nitrogen bottle for tuning. Man I think you'll be shocked at how quick links, inserts, some sort of heim, bracket will be. Metal is like gold in a build and its fawking expensive these days:eek:. Nice shit to have laying around is 2x4 rec and 2x6 steel since they work as crossmembers, brackets(cut out), etc. Flat stock will probably be in high demand for you as well 2" 3/16 will have a million uses. Tubing in any size will be great. Post up your list of so far please.

http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e37/33JJ/leftovers/100_1713.jpg

87 TT/zuk case
Most of my propane stuff
assist ram/lines
UHDP skid material
complete fj80 front (less HP 3rd)
2-4.10 3rds
3- 60% 38's/ 4-beadlocks complete
Plenty of mis steel for brackets
Buddy w/ mini machine shop (tube adapters, ect)
tacoma front brakes/fj80 master cyl.
optima yellow top (new)
Sheet metal for patch work
spare front housing

Im sure there is alot I have forgot to list. It has taken a while to gather all of it but im only bout 1k into all of it :grinpimp::grinpimp: I have alot of my own leftovers im using so that helps alot too. This is my 3rd all out build, with 2 DD/wheelers in between. So I know exactly what I want and where im willing to sacrifice for budget. I also have some killer freinds that help with all this stuff . I borrow alot of stuff as well as trade out work (unspoken rule) If I were to decide to go with airshocks I have a buddy with a nitro setup, and I have the tire groover borrowed for example.

I got alot doone today. The motor/trans is ready to pull out of the toy truck, the body is seperated from the frame, and the front axle/yj's are pulled from under the zuk. I have some mis stuff I can do till I get the cherry picker then I will start mocking the drivetrain up and patching rust.

I really like the build so far. You will be better off after putting all the thought and planning into the build. I wasted a lot of time and money on my first build with a hybrid rear and built Sammy front axle only to wheel it 3 times and start over.

I just finished my hydro assist steering and hopefully will get to try it Saturday at Golden Mountain. The only full hydro system that I have installed is on my garden tractor. The steering wheel center position changes constantly after making turns, hopefully it works better on off road rigs.

Thanks man, I took alot from your build....even have the pic of yours with all those questions I asked answered on the back in my "4x4 diary" as my wife calls it ;) My buddys went last weekend and said it was NASTY, nobody got up anything. Oh how I long to go in my own :(

I put all my steering stuff up for sale to see what happens. If it sells i'll go full hydro, if not ill run it. It will be a while before I have to decide 100% so well see.

Yep thats me :D I got it from jimbojones on Zukikrawlers. I bought another LHD arm from a buddy and traded it to jimbo for the RHD. Ended up being 75.00 out of pocket, jimbo was pretty stoked too. Weather I get the slee type arms (I hope, fingers crossed) or modify the stock ones ill just put a tab on tie rod to carry the drag link with hiems on all of it.

Like so...
http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e37/33JJ/leftovers/toy1.jpg

Started the patch work today, Got the firewall "done". Cut out all the rust, patched it back and covered the mis. holes I wont be using like the stock clutch cable hole, ect. Even got carried away and almost covered the throttle cable hole :shaking: I did leave any bolt holes I may use (mounting points, grounds ect.) Its a lil frankenstein but it will be covered for the most part and im just not that anal anymore :flipoff2:

Still working on rust repair. Bout 1/4 done with it. Using what ever I can get for sheet metal, stainless and galvinized. Wont have to worry bout it rusting again though.

Doesnt look like much but it took me the better part of the weekend and i'm proud of it. I will weld some of it from the bottom once the body is off the frame. The bottom will be covered in undercoating and the inside of the tub will be some sort of DIY bedliner. All floor pan to body seems will be sealed with NP-1 adhesive also.

pvkj454

The hydro assist is a huge improvement on the rocks and easy to steer. My co-worker was fighting the wheel on his 85 4Runner on the same trail. He is going to add it to his rig now.

JJ3
01-12-2009, 03:13 AM
cool, I picked up my ram/lines last week. I knew with this one I wanted assist at the minimum, no more "turn driver"-"I AM!" or "I CANT!" I really wanted to run full hydro but the budget wouldnt allow it and all the stuff im using is supa cheep ;)

I'll check on it, I would like to sport the bling ya know :D

I pulled away from the rust repair for a bit to build some jackstands. I've been wanting a set of adjustables to fine tune things for a while now but im poor and hate to spend money. I really needed them now as I want to get the frame level both ways when I rebuild/extend it.

Finished building one tonight, less paint, and i'll do 3 more. Of coarse everything used on them is leftovers from work. :smokin:

Material list;

3/8" plate
3x.25 wall fence post
1 3/8 anchor bolts, nuts, plates
#5 rebar
3x3x.25 angle

http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e37/33JJ/leftovers/100_1728.jpg

There adjustable from 17ish" to 23ish". I also welded a one of the same size nuts to the bottom of the bolt, inside the toob, to prevent the threaded rod from wanting to tilt when extended. I figure these have to be rated at least the same as my cheapo 6 tons.

How are you liking you susp. setup? Im deffitly doing bushings at the frame and trying to decide on either hiems or flex joints at the axle. Ive about decided to do wishbone 3's front/rear and im not sure if a single 3/4x3/4 cromo w/high mis. and a 5/8 grd8 is enuff for the upper????? Thoughts? Its that or save for the ballistic 2.63 joints. bout a 200.00 differance in cost.

going to use these on the frame side... (4300-200)

http://www.polyperformance.com/shop/Poly-Performance-Bushing-Kits-p-16605.html

And either these... (lefts on one end rights on the other)

http://www.ruffstuffspecialties.com/catalog/34-rod-end-set-1-lh-1-rh-p-338.html

Or 2 weldable and one forged 2.63 (adjustable upper)

http://www.ballisticfabrication.com/Ballistic-Joints_c_12.html

OR... polys 4300-200 bushings (5/8's thru bolt) everywhere but the upper and use ballistics 2.63 forged joint on the upper. Im afraid the jam nut wouls always be loose this way though.

OR bushings all the way around????????????????????????????????

When I was building my rig, the wife was doing great at selling real estate. That has come to a screeching halt with the economy. I always try to save money when possible, I built the last four of our daily drivers from wrecks.

I am happy with my suspension choice. I don't know enough about suspension design regarding strength of joints so I went with the large ones. When we wheel at Pickett Forrest we are a long way back in the woods if we break something. I also thought the Johnny or flex joint would last longer because it can be greased. I like the looks of the Ballistic forged flex joint but I don't know if they are worth $200 more over 3/4 cromos on a light weight rig. I torqued the crap out the 1 1/4" jam nuts and they haven't loosened yet.

In hindsight I probably would have gone with a nearly stock D60 and 14 bolt instead of built D44s. It probably would have been as cheap.

She has been out of work for 2 years now, my son was born and life/economy hit. We're really looking forward to moving ahead in life and paying some debt off. The zuk is in last place on scheduling.

I have to agree with you on going with the bigger joints for tht reason. I think its worth 200.00 to not break :) I'm also waiting to see if ruffstuff comes out with the 7/8x3/4 package like the 3/4 they have know. Supposedly this week and @ 50ish for 2 complete. That would be perfect for strenght and budget.

I ever get this thing done we'll have to ride sometime.

I shot you a pm before I saw this thread. It basically says what I am planning to do for my front FJ80 axle. I will subscribe to this thread. Mines going under a coiled FJ40. Thought we could swap idears.

Here's the arms. I may end up modifiying/beefing them instead of the slee double sheer setup....just depends on how the cards fall. Big thanks to JimboJones for the RHD Oz arm :grinp

I just recieved my RHD steering arm from Specter Offroad. It was $63 bucks to my house. Those guys have been the best source for any Land Cruiser parts I have ever found. They said they had more. Now to move my tie rod up front. Hey JJ3 do you have a single ended 8" ram with heim ends laying around?

I'll know more on the arms later...soon I hope :smokin:

Update;

Traded the TF givaway diff for a fj80 rear, fj62 rear (less shafts) and some cash that I used to pay for the zuk itself :) The 80 rear is full float/disc brake/9.5. I'll be using the 62 rear for a hybrid 809.5 front. FJ80 outers on the fj62 housing/center. Im going to set it up where I can use the stock 80 inners and I have a credit at poly performance im going to use for a cromo birf (spare) and IF I break one ill buy another. once my axles are done I should be good for many years to come. 1 ton toyota's baby!

The bad is my 15" rims wont fit over the brakes with out 1" or more spacers (another 150.00:( )and i'm already 63.5 wms (80" out-out) on a 55" body. I really dont want to go any wider than it is already, it would put the rotors inside the inner lip of the rim and I have alot of time in my beadlocks/tires. Not to metion I cant get enuff out of them to pay for a new set......again the quality of my problems has greatly increased :D

Interesting axle build. Pm me a pic of your ram and I might buy it from you if it will work. Also, keep me posted on those arms.

I just sold my FJ80 rear with elect locker for $500. Since I went to an Atlas (which centered my rear output shaft) I started looking for a centered axle. Right now I have a spider 9, currie high pinion, and detroit (35spl). Hope the currie hp will hold up to 37" tires and a mild 350.

Right now I am researching my tie rod options for my front FJ80 axle.
My dilema:
Run draglink straight down to right steering arm (I will have to use heims in this case and my tie rod will be a little lower because it will have to reside under the steering arm) or......run the draglink down to the tie rod, like a TJ set up (looking at buying the Currie heavy duty draglink). I would probably use FJ80 tie rod ends and this would allow my tie rod to sit higher as well. What do ya think? Of course if I get some sort of upper arms, which eventually I will cough up the money, I will re-address.

I will keep an eye out for some in expensive 16-17 inch beadlocks in the 6 on 5.5 bolt pattern for ya.

Wow Josh. Looks like you will be needing some 17" wheels.

JJ3
02-10-2009, 03:11 PM
Im just going to run the drag link to the tie rod w/ weld on tabs and hiems, be fine fo me ;) I wanted the non e-locker cause the housing has to be cut apart if you break a shaft on the shift fork side. A cv rear would have cured your drivline angle too. Works out for me cause im running a zuk case.

16's will clear but I think I will just go with some oem toy alum rims in the 17" flavor. Maybe weld a bead protector ring on the outside edge and use np-1 on the tire bead to insure a seal. Used 17" tires are alot easier to come by and the oem wheels will give me the back spacing I need (5ish") to stay around 77-78" outside tire. Plus there cheaper and lighter than new steelies :)

Update

"finished" the front section of rust/floorpan repair this weekend. This was a big milestone for me, didnt think I would ever get to this point. I had to get this part done before I could start cutting the tunnel for the motor/trans swap.

http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e37/33JJ/leftovers/100_1775.jpg

This pics shows a good angle for where the boatsides will be. Ignor the warpage on the rocker material, heat got it when doing the floorpan. It will be covered with the boatsides anyway and never be seen.
http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e37/33JJ/leftovers/100_1776.jpg

Got the motor from the donor today, it was not an easy task alone to say the least. Got it out and around to the garage to start mockup though. Looks like alot of tunnel work will be needed to get it where I want it, that will be next.

Prol going to go with these centers/rings. Going flat centers for sure for cost and to get the 5"+ back spacing I need.

Did you figure out your suspension joints yet??? I used the Poly Perf. 4305 bushings, and went with a chromoly 3/4x5/8" heim, with a 5/8" bolt. The 3/4"x5/8" heim is rated way higher than the 3/4" x3/4" heim....Not sure why.

The 3/4"x5/8" heim is rated way higher than the 3/4" x3/4" heim....Not sure why. Yeah Im bout 99% sure im going with a wishbone upper setup front and rear. It has worked well on 2slo's rig and from my understanding this setup acts like a leaf sprung setup in terms of travel. This will allow me to use my mech/assist steering without issues, simplifys the susp. in general, and satisfies my anal retintive need for the front to match the rear.

2slo's rig;

For materials Im bout 99% sure on 2x.188 or .250 sq tube on the lowers with ballistics weld on 2.63 joints. On the upper prol go with 1.5".120 wall rnd with a forged 2.63 joint at the axle end. Bushings on all frame conections for cost and shock load absorbtion. Not sure on which bushings yet. Ill go with the 5/8 bore 2.63 joints and may go with polys PPM-4300-200. It also uses a 5/8 bolt and is similar in size to the ballistic joint. I would prefer this route over hiems for the rebuildability on the joints, strength on the single upper, and I believe the 2.63's have more misalignment that the 3/4x3/4 hiems steped down to 5/8 with the high mis. I would need. I also dont care about having adjustable lowers, I think I can set it up for the upper to be plenty.

Also from my understanding the load rating difference is from the larger head with the smaller bolt. This seems to be the way to go.

Thanks guys. I havent worked on it any. Been on the axles, want to get them "done" before I move on. I did score alot of parts/material since last though. Got some 1.87x.420 tube for my lowers, a bunch of 1.5" anywhere from .180 to .500 wall ;) As soon as I get the axles done i'll start working on the frame.

Im really thinking about putting the tin top tub back for a less hardcore family build later and going all out with a buggy type build. The TT will be a rasin within a year if I dont and I REALLY dont want the body to hold me back on stuff. We'll see what happens. Something like this if I do....

I wheeled with group at GMP last weekend. One guy had a rig that reminds me of that one. It had a 1.3, 4 link F&R, 100"WB, Yota axles, and 37" Krawler TAs. He idled up obstacles on the difficult rated trails that everyone else had to hit more than once. Even the bigger tire rigs didn't do as well as he did. I don't know how much difference his Krawler TAs make over Swampers.

Im at a turning point, help me decide. I have the body off the frame right now and will be making my own frame from 2x3x.188 either way. Really leaning towrds the buggy end of things as the top will be mashed eventually without an exo, which is out of the question for me.

A) Keep the top but no doors/glass
http://rides.webshots.com/album/560053585waYbYl

http://inlinethumb32.webshots.com/351/2955885390043391076S425x425Q85.jpg

B) Cut the top and keep the firewal, floor pan, hood.
http://www.muddevils4x4.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=510&st=0&sk=t&sd=a&sid=88a49b91819089e9864515ea8139905e

http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s260/rockmafia1/DPG%20-07-05-08/100_4707.jpg

C) Full chassis

http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/ll273/ruearmstrong/buggy002.jpg

http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/ll273/ruearmstrong/001-3.jpg

I have close to enuff material to fab the chassis, but it will cost more in the long run. Keeping the tub I will cut most of it up anyway, if I set it back I can build it later.

Thoughts?

Brad (Mossyrocks) says option 2, he is prol right. It will be cheaper, give me what im looking for and allow me to finish what I have started while using the parts I have at hand. I really hate to chop the top off but I know it is inevitable that it will be mashed. That and im going to need to modify all the pedals as well as the trans tunnel for all the toy parts im using. I would love to keep the zuk and build it 1 linked, mech/ass steering, mini axles and 37's. Then go all out on a bash buggy with the crusier axles and .180 wall tube I have.

Some days I just want to sell it all, I really have NO time or money for it right now.

i say option 1

roczuk

I feel your pain JJ3.

with kids there is just not enough time to build quickly. I think you should stick with Option 1. keep the top. design the cage so that in the future (if needed) you can cut the top off. I think as long as you fab some roof sliders you should be fine.

look at 2slo's rig, if he had roof sliders he probably would have not damaged his tintop as bad. plus if you bring women/kids along you are going to want some sort of element protection.

if you look at my build you will see that i've installed plates on the roof which are sandwiched and welded to the inside cage. therefore the roof sliders will be solidly connected to the cage.

on my first shakedown run i will prove that they work as i plan on pushing the rig over on it's side to devirginize it.

either way, keep up the good work.

Don't let it get you down, man. Many of us have those same days, where it all seems overwhelming/hopeless. But you've got things going for you that many people don't... great ideas, great skills, a wife/family who supports this positive addiction, and all the time in the world to build what you want (even though I know it doesn't seem like it sometimes). There's no deadline here. Build as time/money allows, and when you find yourself getting down about it, look at that pic of your oldest sitting in the passenger seat with that big ass smile on his face. That's all the motivation you need. Let him see you stick with this project. Let him learn the virtue of setting a goal and achieving it. Let him see how proud you are to have him there beside you building it, completing it, and hitting the trails in it. Trust me, it'll be worth it... in more ways than you can imagine.

I guess I'll go ahead and throw my vote into the mix. I say option #2. I also say to look around, and have your friends look around, for a non-TT sammy body that you can use instead of the TT (that is, if you still REALLY want to have a TT wheeler at some point in the future -- If not, cut that biznitch up! :D ).

It's good to see you're still around, man. Any time you think it's all hopeless, think about my situation and how long it's taken/taking me to be able to build a rig. I feel your pain, x100. But trust me, you'll probably have 3 or 4 more rigs built and sold by the time I'm done with mine.

My vote is for #2 for sure.

#1 looks cool while the body still looks good, but as soon as all those dents come into play it looks like shit. Dont get me wrong dents are battle scars but at some point it just starts looking like a mangled POS!!
#2 is just Awesome looking in my opinion.
#3 Too many people do, its been over done, might as not even call it a Sami cause theres nothing left of it. Just build a tube buggy, dont even try to pass it off as a Sami.

Stay up on your build man, its coming along. Dont make yourself work on it, work on it when you feel like it, and dont when you dont!

Thanks. I really wanted a fresh start, and a soild foundation. I think I would have had more time in grinding/plating than I do in the new frame. Plus I gained 1" clearance using the 2x3 (depending on how my lowers mount)

I would do another but I would have to have 4-500 and the stock body brackets to do it. Its really more of a one off personal use project.

if it rains hard where you are, option "A" would seem nice. it gets darn cold where i'm at and we've also been caught in a few high country snow storms that quickly invaded our sunny july day! as much as i love option "B", mine has kept it's body. i like doors and glass when it's cold and wet, or when our cursed winds hit 50+. i don't like going home due to severe weather, especially considering how many hours that can take. keep the body, use the doors when necessary. ditch the doors when not.

Adapter from toy trans to zuk case;
http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e37/33JJ/leftovers/100_1845.jpg

This where I need help. Link/belly design...

T-case is more or less where it is going. Ill prol use one of the case spine (wraps entire bolt pattern of case) with bushing set on itand the trans. Ill use a 2 peice front shaft so the lowers will break over at the same place as the shaft and give me a flat belly. I would like to run tri lower, straight upper 4 links. As well as make the case removable with out pulling the susp loose. The motor/trans will be removed together when any trans service is needed. I could build a small subframe assembly similar to buggys???

Any ideas would be great.

Looking at the way you connected your case to the trans, my worry would be driveline vibes. did you do something specific to eliminate this? Also, it might just be the pics but it looks like the 2wd yota trans shifter sits really far back?

JJ3 sorry bout that didnt explain it well. PVKJ454 im glad you understood. do you recieve any vibes? do you drive it on the road? My only worry with connect them strait together JJ3 isany kind of twisting or bump on the t-case would put too much stress on the joint. I would think at least with a set up like PVKJ454 you have some kind of wiggle room.

JJ3 i was asking about the trans shift and placement. it looks a bit far back but it might be the picture. how is it in relation to driveability?

JJ3
11-05-2009, 04:18 PM
I see, no speed here so ill risk it. I will prol have to bend the shifter to where I want it.

Saying you're sorry for something WHILE you're doing it means you're not really sorry. People put a lot of time and thought into their build threads in this forum. I'm fairly sure JJ would rather not have his thread watered down with extremely generic questions that have nothing to do with his build.

12-19-2009, 08:10 PM
i think a single ended would put a lot of strain on one knuckle, not that it couldn't take it but a doulbe ended seems like it would share the load. you could also tuck it up out of the way.

JJ3
12-20-2009, 04:03 AM
Its more about fitment now. The frame side panhard mount is where the single ended ram wants to be at full stuff. With all ive put into this axle I would really like to run double shear high steer and a double ended ram. I have the arms milled out, just havent had tim to finish them.

Post a pic of your setup man.

b/c of the leaves i could get the ram up higher. when i link it i will redo the mount. the tube is a little higher than the bottom of the axle so it works out pretty good for now

D Boz
12-21-2009, 05:18 PM
The front end came together very nicely. Those panhard mounts are scrap/leftovers? :smokin:

I know you said your tie rod side ram mount would interfere with the frame side panhard

Its more about fitment now. The frame side panhard mount is where the single ended ram wants to be at full stuff.

Nothing wrong with a DE ram, but with mechanical steering and a panhard, the single ended would be easier and less expensive.

Maybe I am missing it, but it wont fit off of the side of the diff, right behind the tie rod?

http://i792.photobucket.com/albums/yy206/DBozsPictures/for%20other%20peoples%20threads/JJ3front.jpg

I am guessing there isn't much room between the panhard and tie rod, so at full stuff (when they are closer together), there isn't room for the ram in between them?

JJ3
12-22-2009, 02:53 AM
Thanks man, the lil tires are really discouraging at times ;( overall happy with it though. All my mounts are homemade from scrap, starting out with cut up debbie cake boxs ;)

I already have my orbital valve so the cost diff. is only in the ram. I have a few steering boxs setting here so it is an option but I will have to run mid steer for the single ended. This pic shows it better...

http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e37/33JJ/leftovers/SD530686.jpg

At full stuff and full lock to the drivers side the frame side panhard is below the tie rod (highsteer) Thats with around 4" vertical compression

Give-er Hell Your rig is looking good.

I had to read your whole build from the start, and even though I have a soft spot for Tin tops, I definately like the Pro mod style move I think you will be way happier in the long run.

I think you made the right choice. The chassis looks awsome keep plugging away...

You a chip slinger by trade??? (machinist/toolmaker)

For a carpenter you have some Fine metal fabrication skills. most carpenters I know dont know there ass from their elbow when it comes to building rigs.
Kudo's to you sir.... keep up the good work :smokin:

Now the tough Questions for you since you inspired me to build a 9.5/80 hybrid front for a future rig...Thanks like I needed more projects :flipoff2: haha

Anyways I tracked one down but want to know some more before I throw money at it. The high pinion would be a dead give away but the third member is gone. First time with yota axles want to know more I guess.

Read your axle thread. defiantely good tech...

Do all 80 front axle housings look like the photo below?

Are you running 80 stock shafts?

Are they 30 spline?

What are the front axle shaft daimeter's inner outer?

OK, after a long delay from 60-70hrs weeks at work, lots of cussing, and a commitment to never touch it again, I got a half day it on it. :shaking: Traded a buddy the 37's for some 39's, and finished the roof bars.

Moved the back roof bar out 5ish" for more head coverage.
http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e37/33JJ/leftovers/SD530765.jpg

The roof bars complete, these about did me in. Very complex (IMO) notches. In the end it will have a 1/16" stainless steel top on it.

That last one you sold is looking good. The 4 links, airshocks and axles are mounted. Only a couple of easy mods had to be done to the chassis to work with his combo.

You did a great job on the tube work. Now I want one.
