So I have come to the conclusion that an Auto Transmission is the way to go. My question is for the guys that are running 4spd auto's. With all things considered and the fact that I will be running the mostly stock 4.0 in my 2000 TJ, Which trans have you had the best luck with?

I have a transplanted AW4 in mine and love it. Easy to install and wire, however if I was to do it all over I would probably pony up the dough and go 700R4. The AW4 is a power hog and it builds alot of heat when worked hard. To better assist you need specs of your rig. Mine is an 88 YJ with a 4.0 out of a 93 YJ, tranny came out of a 92 XJ. Still running the 231, dana 60 rear, 50 front, 5.38 gears and 38" SSR's. Will hold 75 on flat ground and run 65 in TX headwinds.

The 42RLE sucks. Eliminate that one from your choices.

I am waiting on the funds for a set of tires that I can put on some beadlocks. Hopefully 38" sx's or 37 Krawlers.

I have an 87yj with a 4.0, AW4, dana 300 with teralow, and then d60 and 14b with 4.56s, beadlocked 39.5in iroks and that works great for what I'm wheeling in, I occasionally wish for a little lower of a crawl gear but that means lower gears in the axles, all the auto trannys are pretty similar gear wise. But yes, like robs said, the AW4 is a powerhog.

I'm running an AW4 in a 97 tj (4.0) but my gears aren't low enough for the OD (yet). Seems to do the job good but it does build the heat up under certain conditions.

I have a 727 behind a 360 in my CJ and wished i had a 4th gear for years. Can't kill a 727 but the pan gives front driveshaft issues.

700r4 is probably the best overall but $$

A stock AW-4 seems to be able to take severe punishment without busting.

Also very easy to source used, and generally quite inexpensive.

I run 400+ HP through mine, swapped into a YJ, and haven't broken it yet.

Much aftermarket support due to parts commonality with certain V-8 Toyota car transmissions. Readily available heavier clutches = less heat and firmer shifts.

Thanks for the input everyone, I have been leaning towards the 700r4 from the start but I hadn't thought about the auto's in the 03-06 wranglers..I will do some research on that one. Are there any issues, problems, or other advice that anyone can think of?

Well Turbo 400 is my favorite tranny but the AW4 is a good tranny for your application. I have no heard any bad things about them over the years.

They effin SUCK. They had problems starving on steep inclines. They have a shitty OD ratio. They have no deep pan available. POS.

Using a 42RLE (wich is weaker than what you prob. need) would be a pain in the a$$. you need to run all the 03 -06 electronics and such to even make it work. The flywheels changed (CPS has double the notches)

Go with a 4l60E. If you dont drive it long distances on road go for something like a TH400.

Id stay away from a 700R4 and its TV cable like I would the 42RLE (03-06 TJ)

Another vote for the AW4... I have a hard time thinking anything would stay together in stock form like the AW4 has in my rig....
