: Black 04 Cummins dually crew 6spd 300,000 miles?
Shadow Crawlers 12-30-2008, 06:11 PM Black 04 Cummins dually crew 6spd 300,000 miles. Just had an injector pump, ball joints, and injectors put in. SLT has all the guages etc.
I should be able to pick it up for around 8 or 9k. This truck is really clean inside and out and looks to be taken care of really well. What would your guys take be on this being that it has a sh*t load of miles? I know 300k isn't bad for a cummins but being a 24 valve I don't want to risk my chances if it's not worth it.
BTW blue book is around 18k in excellent condition.
Thanks
Chris.
GmManDan 12-30-2008, 06:30 PM What was the truck used for, personally owned, is there any other maintance that has been noted what clutch does it have in it? I would worry about the rest of the truck falling apart around the engine.
66cummins 12-30-2008, 06:36 PM If you could pick it up for 8K why not. New injectors and pump already to boot. That truck won't fall apart any worse than any other make. Like the chevy doors that used to be basically glued on sagging
ironworker378 12-30-2008, 07:29 PM sounds like a good deal to me i had a 01 with 310,000 when i traded it in on a 07 it ran great and the truck was not falling apart..:smokin:
Shadow Crawlers 12-30-2008, 07:55 PM Reason for being so 'cheap' is that it's from a wholesale/carlot buddy. traded it in for 7500. He sold it to the same guy that traded it back in and spent the maintenance money on it. I will test drive it tomorrow and report back. From what is known it hasn't really be abused from heavy work. Has a brake controller for what its worth. It can't be anyworse than my 87 f350 :P. I want to do some research before getting too excited lol.
redcheetah 12-31-2008, 09:40 AM I just bought a 2003 Dodge 2500 SLT with cummins for $8700 with 124,900 on the odometer. It is in good shape with just a few minor dings in the rear bumper and one scratch on the front bumper. New lift pump, and maintained on a fleet program. I would try to hold out for a better price, maybe just the $7500 he paid for it. This was in So Cal private party off of Craigslist.

IMHO, count yourself lucky. You still can't hardly touch a 12 valve mid '90s Dodge with ~300k miles on it and in reasonable condition for $7500 around here.
Dhorn33 12-31-2008, 11:40 AM I am selling my 97 12v xcab 4x4 long box for $8100 here in MN but it only has 134k on it. It seems like the diesel trucks in general have really come down in price in the past several months and the newer ones even more than a 12v Cummins rig. That is a cheap price for that truck I think - but it does have 300k miles so you have other parts besides the engine/tranny to consider. If everything is tight and there then it seems like a fair deal to me?
LCexplorer 12-31-2008, 12:08 PM When I look at newer model high mileage trucks like the one you describe, the first thing I usually look for is a hitch in the box, either 5th wheel or gooseneck (Usually followed by looking for possible exhaust brake). More times then not it will usually indicate use as a hotshot truck which should be a consideration when purchasing. If that is the case, the truck was used for hotshotting, then we all know hotshotters always tow way below the limit of the truck ;)
rpm4x4 12-31-2008, 12:52 PM Dude, If the body is solid looking you can afford to throw a couple grand at it to get what you want for that price. I wouldnt hesitate. On TDR there is a guy that has 600K on an 02. original engine used as a cross country hauler. Milage means nothing. Its all in how it has taken care of. Ive heard of people needing a manual trans at 120K and others still running the original over 300K. Used is always a gamble but for that price you can afford to take that risk.

Most hotshotters keep thier rig in pretty good shape so the dont break down in the middle of nowhere. I would still buy said truck.
Shadow Crawlers 12-31-2008, 04:14 PM It was used as a hot shot truck most of it's life. My buddy sold it once a couple years ago, and the guy traded it back in. Has all the reciepts for the recent work. Injectors, aftermarket frame mounted fuel pump, ball joints, front tires, ats turbo and exaust. The engine light is on and was told by the mechanic that did the work that its because of the aftermarket turbo and jake brake. Has egt and boost guages mounted on the steering collumn as well.
Took the oil cap off and there is no blow by. Drive solid and hear no driveline noise. The interior is very clean and hasn't been abused.
4.10's in the diffs.
Thats all I can think of now.
prolly going to pick it up for 8500 since I've had good feed back on it so far.
He's listing it for 10,995.

Don't know what clutch it has but feels strong. Doors feel good, drivers you can tell has a tiny bit of slop, but not bad especially compared to my 87 F350 lol.
Shadow Crawlers 12-31-2008, 04:20 PM Whats up mike :D. hope to make it out to moab this year especially if I get this truck and diesel doesn't go sky high again lol.
The body isn't bad the bed is a little beat up and the tail gate needs some work at the hinges but nothing I can't handle. Considering my dad paid 8k for our 87 f350 460 10 years ago I don't feel so bad paying the same for this truck.

Joey D 12-31-2008, 06:21 PM There are 03 trucks on the lots in my neck of the woods for 10-11 with just around 100k miles on them. With 300 K I would buy it for maybe 6-7 max.
Keep looking
Shadow Crawlers 12-31-2008, 06:24 PM Well I'm trading a 98 eclipse gst and getting 3500 out of it so I'll only be paying about 5000 in all actuality. Besides that eclipse is pretty useless as far as I'm concerned :D.
Shadow Crawlers 01-01-2009, 10:32 AM ok pulled engine codes... Let me know what you can find. Thanks Chris
P0243 P4777
rpm4x4 01-01-2009, 10:39 AM I know a p0243 is a wastegate malfunction. A chip will cause that. I dont know what the other one is, I will see if I can find out.
rpm4x4 01-01-2009, 10:50 AM P4777
Are you sure on this number? I cant find anything on it?
Shadow Crawlers 01-02-2009, 03:56 AM I will double check when I get to the lot tomorrow.
04 or 04.5? the engines/injectors are a little different. Seems like a lot of miles, but with good maint, should still have a bit left in it.
stomp-a-jeep 01-02-2009, 07:02 AM the aftermarket turbo is causing the p0243. no worrys
Shadow Crawlers 01-03-2009, 06:36 AM The build date is 03/04. Would this be an 04.5 truck? I verifyed that it had an ats manifold and turbo. Drove the truck on the highway yesterday and man at 70 the fawker revs lol. Thats what you get when it has 4.10s in the diffs lol.
Going up a steep hill the truck would pull about 25-30psi of boost with cruise set at 70.
I sure like how this thing drives but at 70 it's a little loud from the exaust. Guess when your pulling a load to moab you don't aneed to haul ass lol.
Shadow Crawlers 01-03-2009, 06:37 AM What kind of fuel mileage can you expect from a dually with 4.10's. loaded and unloaded?
Shadow Crawlers 01-04-2009, 08:33 AM Well I drove an 04 crew cab, short bed auto yesterday and must say I'm going to save my pennies. I liked the way the truck ran much better. Glad it it came in on the lot yesterday . I won't probably end up buying it but glad I drove something else.
Thanks for all your time and effort. If I hadn't posted on pirate or colorado4x4.org I would have been more likely to make a spontaneous buy lol.
I'll be posting when I'm ready to dive into a lower mileage truck . Besides having a dually is kind of ridiculous for what I need, plus shifting 6 gears with 4.10's got old driving it on 100mi round trip eron.
