: Fawk the GM push button

I am so tired of the push button 4 wheel drive in my s-10. The damn thing never works right for more than a month. I want to go with something that is more simple to get my front end to engage. I have heard of a cable operated system and I think I will go that route.

How does that work with 4 hi and 4 low if it is only one lever?

How much do they cost?

Where can I find one?

How easy are they to install?

All they do is replace the Vac. or elec. actuator that locks your front axles in. The actuator took the place of hubs. Basically with the cable enguaged, you are running around with your front end enguaged. Just like having your hubs locked in on a conventional set up. You will still have to use the push button for your range selection. I think Summit has them also. I have not looked too close at them to remember $. They screw in place of the actuator, and then you run the cable.

The cable takes the place of the actuator in the front diff. The transfer case will still be shifted by the push button. Take you truck to the dealer and have them test the Encoder Motor. That is the part that shifts the t-case. It has probably gone bad. $500 to replace, and that is just parts!

500 dollars??????? OMFG!!!!

Looks like I will be trying to find this cable unit.

So... If I use this, I will not have to replace the encoder motor, correct?

no, these are two completely different systems. One engages the front axle (the cable deal you want to install), and the other engages the transfer case (the button on your dash).

It would be like locking in the manual hubs and not putting your truck in 4 wheel drive, if you installed that cable lock and not use your push button.

Oh crap! That sucks! So, since I now have a D44 with manual hubs, this unit would be worthless. I guess I will be shelling the 5 bills out eh?

Where is the cheapest place to buy an encoder motor?

Do they make any aftermarket ones, or do I have to go to gmpartsdirect.com?

Hay SHAW are you from ZR2.com to. you should go to the 231 t case and use the manual shifter. You can get the t-case for cheap I got mine for a bill and then get the SYE from AA and you will be goog to go.

Does the rear slip yoke match the old t-case? I already had a custom rear drive shaft made for the stock t-case?

If so, that sounds like an awesome idea! Where do I find one?

Thanks dude!

Let's say I plan on finding an encoder motor and installing it. Could the average Joe install one without much trouble? Do I have to drop the entire t-case?

Okay, I read some stuff on the s10 extremists board and found out that the 233 and 231 are the same, only one is manual and one is electric.

Then I found out that the encoder motor is on the outside of the t-case and it shouldn't be too much trouble to swap out.

Anyone have anything to add???

Well, I know no one cares... but I bought an encoder motor and I am going to try to swap it out myself.

Thanks for the help with my last few questions guys... :flipoff2:
