: Cheapest Axle for series?
cheapo 01-01-2009, 07:03 PM newb around here but i picked up a 59 Series 2 88 Diesel. motors pooched but getting a free 2 1/4 gas soon, plan on a SOA and 34"-37"s but I know the axles are weak. Is it worth doing the toy conversion or just putting the mini truck axles under there when i am doing the SOA? Up in canada so Not so easy getting from rovertracks. How strong is the stock front? I guess just as bad as the rear?
tripm 01-01-2009, 09:09 PM 37's with 60 hp? Your gearing with rover axles isn't going work either. Mini truck axles don't work - center diff in rear and you need offset. (Just saw you're getting a gas motor - add 15hp!)
The stock gearing with 34's is way off and you're at 4.7 to start.
Get some 32's and use the truck as is or plan on repowering, changing the trans and xfer, modifying the frame xmember and swapping axles if you're going to put huge tires on.
If you're up for a challenge there are a few total swaps around.
Not a SII, but you get the idea:

looks like a lot of work for a marginal improvement. what's up w/ the hideous steering box location. i thought cj owners were the only ones that needed to worry about "death by steering column impalement"

If you run a LC60 PAS box you can set it further back as the pitman arm comes out from the front.

you would think that since the owner is a yota guy he would have figured that out...or run a saginaw off a scout.
Slunnie 01-02-2009, 06:19 AM Yeah, not wrong. It may have been a IFS Hilux (minitruck) PAS box or something which sits that way. He apparently works at a Hilux/4Runner parts place, so may not cross much Landcruiser gear.
LR Max 01-02-2009, 09:23 AM Get a suffix B transfer case, drop it in and it can easily handle 34" tires off road.
I do it all the time. I also rebuilt my 2.25, overbored cylinders, put a cam, blah blah. That helps a lot. Power steering is amazing.
hoggyn 01-02-2009, 10:36 AM I suppose the the modifications depend on the intended use. My '55 Series 1 runs 33s (actually 32.5") on standard, fully floating axles. The springs are Rocky Mountain parabolics. It has the original gearbox and 2 litre engine. The gearing is perfect - for me.
cheapo 01-02-2009, 10:39 AM well power isn;t really my problem because i plan on adding a 2.5 cam and a little turbo. kinda want to stay as much landrover as possible. I agree that 37" would be a little to much but i am open to what every come around. Also powersteering from a dodge van is going in because i have it.
Yorker 01-02-2009, 11:11 AM If you want to stay with the 4.7 ratio you could leave the front alone and convert the rear to one of those 4.7 ratio Toyota Diffs, I think Jim Young even offered a discount on axle shafts to the first guy who does that to a Series truck.
Otherwise you can swap in FJ60 or FJ40 axles in their entirety or something along those lines, but then you'll have 4.10 (or 3.70?) diffs and may need to regear to 4.88s, however it would make it easier to upgrade to disc brakes if you so desired.
It really depends what you want to do with the finished product.
HandBuilt 01-02-2009, 01:09 PM Leave the front alone for now, get a Salisbury rear or do a Toyota swap with upgraded axles and open up the wheel wells with D90 front fender skins, clearance the rear openings to match and you can run 35s. Spring over is not worth it on a short wheel base, the driveline angles get really stupid. When the front blows upgrade to a Toyota pig with longfields. FJ60 steering box or Scout is the easiest power steering swap, a sag. box from anything else is gonna fit in there a little odd. Remember the truck had 32 inch tires stock, so 35s are not really that big and they fit in there nice and will get you anywhere you want to go in a SWB.
cheapo 01-02-2009, 05:54 PM Thank you! thats what i wanted to hear! now too save up for the rovertrax kit. unless there is a better way? What about lockers for the front? welded or just open.

the other thing is some people say stay SUA because of too much lift and such yet the series 1 seems to do it just fine?
