: another Cruiser for the collection !
Reddog 08-18-2002, 12:00 PM Picked up another FJ25 over the weekend, thanks to George Odell of the central Nevada Four Wheelers :D
This one must have come from south of he border, the VIN tag is all in Spanish.

This ones got a lot of the parts my other one needed :)
Reddog 08-18-2002, 12:02 PM Here's another shot showing some of the classic lines unique to the FJ25.......
http://members.aol.com/naldco/fj2522
note the round fender wells and the curved door jams
Reddog 08-18-2002, 12:10 PM here's the one that's in the background of the first pic...
http://members.aol.com/naldco/fj2523
This one was originally a california car, it's VIN tag is in english....
both rigs are 1960 FJ25 L , not many were ever imported into the States.
It's going to take a while but someday I'll post a pic of one of these babies all running painted and fully restored. That's my goal. It'll be a sunday driver, just for fun. :)
72rockcruiser 08-18-2002, 12:37 PM I dig 'em man:D Reminds me of something i was wondering about a few years ago. In the specter catalog, it has the specs on a 25, one being it's 4 speed tranny. Why go from 4spd to 3 and back to 4 again?
Reddog 08-18-2002, 12:47 PM They did come with a four speed but interesting was the transfer case it was simple, single range, in and out of four wheel drive only.
Maybe they figured they only needed three speeds in the tranny when they added a low range to the transfer case.
I've discovered lots of stuff that is not consistant to the later FJ40s. The 25 has odd third members, centered rear dif, longer rear springs, unique brake line fittings, single range transfer case and the Willy's like features in the tub. ie the rounded fender wells, and the curved door jams.
texican 08-18-2002, 01:10 PM Reddog, my 62 FJ40 Soft top shares many of the strange features with the FJ25, centered diff, rounded door jams, longer rear springs , but has squared off rear fender cut outs.
Butch
Reddog 08-18-2002, 01:38 PM That looks cool ! How long did they make that model ? Looks just like the FJ25 tub.
Looks like Toyota created that model to use up some surplus FJ25 tubs, maybe ?
texican 08-18-2002, 01:57 PM According to Henry Cubilan, and the owner of the green one that was on the cover of TT a few months ago there were only 4 or 5 of these brought into the USA...........and they seem to think it was a 1962 model only, I do know I had a 1963 FJ40 that was altogether different from this truck, but still had some very unique features different from the 1964 models.....Don't know the reasoning, it is not an identical 25 tub because of the rear fender cut outs are different Maybe they had tons of the FJ25 soft tops in stock to get rid of.......do you have any of the softop stuff for yours? All I have is the door frames.
Butch
FIXXXXAH 08-18-2002, 02:43 PM HEY REDDOG, DID THE SECOND ONE COME WITH A HOOD? IF SO, DID IT HAVE THAT BADASS EAGLE LOOKING EMBLEMS ON THE FRONT? IF SO, WOULD YOU BE WILLING TO SELL THE EXTRA ONE?? LET ME KNOW, MATT
Reddog 08-18-2002, 02:58 PM Texican, no I don't have any soft top stuff. That stuff is probably impossible to find. Though this 25 I just got has the original soft top windshield frame. The other one has a frame off an early 40.
FIXXXXAH, sorry bud, but I don't have an extra one of those. The second rig I got was stripped of all it's emblems.
CruisD64 08-18-2002, 03:45 PM When I was at mudraks 3 weeks ago, he was working on a 62 that was bone stock original and in perfect shape. It only had 68000 original miles. That thing was sweet. I shoulda taken pictures.
rocrawler 08-18-2002, 04:34 PM No reddog didn't get the badass emblem, that emblem along with the front bib is now on my 1964 FJ45 short bed.
texican 08-18-2002, 05:25 PM I wanna see a picture of this emblem!!!!
Butch
nuclearlemon 08-18-2002, 06:11 PM i've got an extra set of soft top inner and outer door handles from an fj40 soft top...don't know if they're the same. the windows were just plexiglass, the door weatherstrip (around the edge) is probably the same as the fj40 and is available through toyota. windows just sat in a channel that had a "L" shaped arm that went into notches on the door frame on the early 40's.

It's the little chrome "T-Bird" looking thing. The only other one I've ever seen came off a FJ25 and it's on the hood of George's FJ45 SWB out in Nevada. I must admit it looks fawking Sweeeet !
:)
Advent Horizon 08-18-2002, 09:35 PM I'm curious...would it be possible to send one of those emblems into a shop that does laser cutting or something, and have them duplicated? I think you could sell a few of those, at least, since I bet some FJ 25 owners need one, and more than a few 40 owners (such as myself :D) want one!
orangefj45 08-18-2002, 09:48 PM there's a 62 soft top cruiser about 5 minutes from my house, belongs to a guy named mike. pretty clean truck, soa with 35's and a chrysler 440!:)
so is neveda george coming to the 45 run?
don: a couple more and you got yourself a shrimp cocktail!:flipoff2:
but you know i'd be happy with any and all scraps! glad to see you finally went and got it!:D
BJ On Roids 08-19-2002, 12:49 AM any decent close up pics of that emblem?
60seriesguy 08-19-2002, 04:45 AM There were actually TWO different FJ25 emblems, the more common stylized chrome "bird", which appeared in 1959, and the ULTRA-RARE bakelite oval "Toyota" emblem, which came on earlier trucks. Of the second, I've only seen ONE ever, on a parts truck in James Asti's collection. I tried buying it for years but he wanted to keep it....sigh!
As for the truck above, which I believe is Butch Baker's 1962 FJ40, it's rare, but not quite as rare. ALL 1961-1963 FJ40 with a factory softtop came with the rounded door jambs like the FJ25, it wasn't till the 1964 model year that Toyota standardized the tub.
There is a TLCA member in Paradise, CA that has one of the rarest Land Cruisers of all times, a 1961 FJ40 that is almost identical to the FJ25 (after all, 1961 was a transition year), but the VIN number is actually 1FJ40-xxxxx, which indicates it was a 1961 *and* an FJ40.
Reddog 08-19-2002, 11:51 AM longer rear springs ,
Butch
I've been looking at those longer rear springs, I may have to try a pair of them on my 40.
Deep South Cruisers 08-19-2002, 12:52 PM saw this one on SOR's picture page:vader2: 1962 FJ25
Reddog 08-19-2002, 01:25 PM I like it !
If I had the resources that Spectre's got mine could look like that too !
Advent Horizon 08-19-2002, 02:18 PM What're the odds of getting either of those logos duplicated?

Do you know anyone who can do that sort of thing ? Like any of those emblems, this one looks like it's chrome plated pot-metal. In fact I'd be a bit leary of even trying to take it off the hood, it might break.
rocrawler 08-19-2002, 05:12 PM Sorry orange45 I won't be able to make the 45 run on Labor Day.
Our club Central Nevada 4 Wheelers are holding our 5th annual Labor Day Roundup. Three days trail rides with plenty of ghost towns thrown in. Along with some of the most extreme rockcrawling that Nevada has to offer.
Advent Horizon 08-19-2002, 08:58 PM Oh, they're not screwed on? Ick, don't want you to screw up your cruiser then!
I would imagine a laser etching shop could do it fairly easily. They just take an object, scan it, and cut the same shape again. I've seen it done with plastic, I would imagine a transition to metal would be simple, but if not, plastic is paintable...
orangefj45 08-19-2002, 10:36 PM sounds like a pretty good excuse to me! have fun!!!!!;)
Mr McGee 08-19-2002, 10:57 PM hey seriously, somebody do it!!!
i want one!

Hey Reddog, that ain't one of Marv's rigs, that's mine! I P.M.'d you a while back about parts, we should talk.
Jim
1960 FJ25, Two of them (the '62 is really a '60), it's a sickness.........
Reddog 08-26-2002, 10:18 PM Jim, I must apolagize. I'm real bad at keeping track of all my emails and I'm especially bad at losing track of peoples names.
I just sent you an email cause I am interested in doing a little networking on the FJ25 stuff. It's funny how quickly things can change....a month ago I was going to sell off all my FJ25 stuff, now I'm totally committed to a full restoration.

Anybody thinking about restoring a FJ25 should be committed......................to an institution!
What I can't believe is the survival rate of these things. I count about 20 in the USA that I know about. Wish I knew a real import number for the FJ25?
Jim
