And where's Suzuki? I'd pick one of three bikes before I ever chose a KTM. Those would be Honda, Suzuki, and Yamaha. As for your poll, I'll pick Honda.

What the heck, I hope you don't mind, but I thought I'd make it a little more interesting by adding 2 more to the poll!

soory guys for the lack of choices, but i was just thinking of the real four strokes!! suzuki and kawi are kinda bahind but we will let thier lack of real four stroke power show in the poll.

as soon as i can afford it the new KTM450 is going to spend more time on the trail then it will in my garage and as for the 300 exc that i'm rebuilding now , it will be a sand bike only.

hey any8 of you guys from AZ? thinking about going down there later this year and wondering what the traila are like down there?

Hey it's too bad you live a ways away or I'd suggest you take my DRZ400S for a ride. Behind the times:question:

Can you elaborate a bit on what you mean, because my suzi gets it awn. In fact I just went to a 47 tooth rear sprocket to slow the fawker down a bit. Oh and there was that bit of additional torque gain too. :p :flipoff2:

Later.

I voted for yamaha cause I still love the 125 and that's what I'd be racing right now. but I have a KTM that I love that just doesn't really fit in any category except fun :D

I I did'nt realize this was a 4-stroke poll, I was thinking 2-stroke. But I've rode a coulple Suzuki DR400's and I think they are prety damn fast, but they still don't compare to my RM250.

I havn't rode any newer CRF's, but I have rode a 01 YZF and it was cool, but not the most impressive thing out there.

I'm calling duh. :D

Hell no a DRZ ain't bringin' nuthin' up on an RM in quickness. The things weigh in at 291 lbs dry. Can you say tank?
:quitemanuverablebutatanknonetheless:

I was speaking in reference to the statement Fox made about the 'zukis and 'sakis being "behind the times" in engine design. I guess I need to start sticking up for the 'sakis now too since, well, you know, the KLX is kind of the same bike in '03. :emb3:

Now I'm not certain what an RM weighs, but I'll bet it aint over 220 lbs dry. Also what is the gearing on the RM? 14/50? or something? The DRZS in stock gearing will do better than 95MPH with the 15/44. I wonder if the RM will top 70MPH for any sustained period? Apples to oranges in my feeble mind.

Now Fox, hep me, I say hep me unnerstan how a big bore, short stroke, dual over head cam, four over sized valve, automatic compression release, liquid cooled, dry sump engine with a patented dual swirl combustion chamber design is, as you say "behind the times"? Oh yea, I forgot the electric start button too. :flipoff2: As far as I know, the only thing behind the times is the damn CV carb on the S model so it could be tuned lean enough to pass smog. I guess I forgot to mention that I found a 40mm pumper carb for it?

2 strokes are "quick" rockets. 4 strokes are "fast" torque monsters IMHO anyway.

Just my $.02

I’ll bite.
I voted for Honda. But the poll is very generic, so for a generic do it all bike, I’d take an XR400, with a street kit. It wouldn’t take the big hits like an MX bike, but I’m a little guy, so there is enough suspension and power for me to have a good time on the trails. Also there is a Honda dealer in just about every town, so parts are available.

It really comes down to what you’re used to. I have only raced a YZ 250 and I loved it. It was an easy to ride bike with good power and forgiving suspension. I rode an older YZ and hated it.

I rode an XR100 a little while back and it was GREAT! I laughed my butt off. I had to ride it up a rocky trail that my wife only made half way (yes I was stoked she got that far). I pulled a few wheelies with total control and a big old :D

well you know how much you see yamaha honda and KTM in the knews about what new changes they have made to thier 4 strokes nad how they are winning all the races and the Suzuki's well....... just don't

Hey Jimmy, my RM250's gearing is 13/50 and is by no means fast comparred to a 4-stroke dual sport, I mean it only goes like 60mph or so, but it gets there real fast! My XL 250 will do over 80mph easy, but it'll take awhile to get there.

I do like the DR 400's, they have a butt load of power for a 4-stroke, but you ain't lying about the weight issue!! I crashed my Brother in laws DR400 a couple weeks ago because it got slide from underneath me and I could'nt hold it up. Plus it sits a good deal higher than my bike so for me it's harder to control.

My bike weighs about 230lbs.

My bad, and sorry if I came across as defensive or anything like that. That certainly wasn't the intent. So please excuse me.

I think Fox was speaking in reference to 4 stroke race bikes which the DRZS clearly is not. :emb2: He did say four strokes though...:D

I'll just shut up now since I have zero knowledge of four stroke race bikes.

Hey Jimmy, the front wheel is always in the air! But thats how I like it!

As for a riding date, that would rule! The trails just above Forest hill at Sugar pine are good fun, and they don't inforce "RED STICKERS" Infact, none of the OHV places around here inforce them. I ride with a couple red sticker guys every weekend, and they never say anything. Even at Prarie City OHV Park.

Oh Jimmy, I've tried emailing youabout Labor Day, but my email keeps sending everything back?

Anyhow, I think I will leave early Saturday morning. We will be heading in the back way (Cisco Grove) and setting up camp at the 4th river crossing. Then playing all day and BBQ'n that evening.

Cool Jeff, color me there fo sho! Barring any unforseen complications that is. So should I just show up at your house Friday night? Should I just drop the skis in your driveway and leave 'em there until Monday? Should I bring the DRZ too?

What's my record for consecutive questions?

Later and let's get a consensus on the riding day, etc. It will have to be a few weeks down the road as we're hitting Dusy-Ershim the 13th through the 15th.

Anyone wanna hit Dusy?

Hi Fox, obviously I do not follow racing to much, but to me it's not so much defending "my" bike perse. It's more about the design of "my" bike. In fact I really wanted to get an XR400! I just couldn't bring my self to buy one "new" though because they aren't water cooled, or electric start. Sure both of those options add weight, but it's not a race bike so I didn't care much. I don't even think the XRs are dual cam or four valve. I do not know for sure though as I can't seem to recall if they are or not. I did find a killer XR I wanted, but the fawker litterally sold it out from under me while I was at the bank getting a cashier's check for it made out in his name! Can you say pissed off?

The DRZS was chosen as best dual sport for 2002. Not that that matters one iota. I had compared new bikes for well over a year and decided the new DRZS was the best of the streetable dual sport bunch if I was going to buy a new bike. The real clincher though was the fact that they slapped the DRZ E series suspension on the S model.

I wanted the bike to be able to take me to the Sierras, etc camping. So I wanted the water cooling and with the electric start it rocks

I here tales of an e-start water cooled XR 450 or something in the works. Hope fully that will be fact by trade in time.

So does Suzuki actually field the DRZ E series bikes in races? I thought they brought the RMs?

I had to gear my KTM down too. i think i'm at 14/44 which is good for only around 90. stock was somewhere around 110 16/40 never tested. I would love a new 525 or LC4 for the push botton start but for know i'll stick with my "old tech" 95 620 rxc. My next choice would be a blue 450 wr.
