: So I bought the pistol, what else do I need?
Amanda G 01-03-2009, 01:20 PM I have nothing gun-related at home other than a Browning 20ga.
What do I need?
I know I need extra mags, a holster (no idea what kind), mag holster.
What other basic stuff do I need, and what is good but not too expensive?
Cleaning kit
etc
School me, wise outdoor forum. :)
Priest 01-03-2009, 01:42 PM basic cleaning kit
range bag to carry your junk
ear and eye protection for shooting
The Black Sheep 01-03-2009, 01:56 PM Locked case/safe/lock box to store it while its not on you or in the vicinity. Priest mentioned cleaning kit, but I will take it one step farther and say get some good lube for it. Some personal defense ammo. I think you got the rest covered.
What did you get btw??
Amanda G 01-03-2009, 02:23 PM Sig P250 9mm
I have eyes and ears, and a lock box for under the bed.
the stinky truck 01-03-2009, 02:30 PM as much ammo as your second mortgage can stand.
Amanda G 01-03-2009, 02:50 PM Ok, so onto Ammo. Does it matter what I put through it to plink at the range? Whats some reliable 9mm thats not $$$? Whats best for carry ammo?

Alot of people use Federal HydraShocks. If you can get your hands on them Ranger SXTs are better, kinda the big brother to the old infamous Black Talons. While they aren't illegal to possess, they are pretty self regulated by Winchester to law enforcement and military.
Keith Strong 01-03-2009, 03:26 PM I have been carrying Golden Sabers, and pretty happy with the shooting results with them.
Good choice on the pistol A!
Triaged 01-03-2009, 03:35 PM Get some WWB (Winchester White Box) from Walmart in the 100 round packs for the range. It tends to be dirty but goes bang. For protection try to find some Speer Gold Dot Short Barrel (http://www.midwayusa.com/eproductpage.exe/showproduct?saleitemid=216634) ammo and see if you and your gun like it. You might have to order it online or ask your local gun shop to order it in for you.
When you get your cleaning stuff get a .40 cal bronze brush too so you can clean the chamber. Bore Snakes work nice for a quick clean at the range with some CLP (cleaner lubricant protectant...like Brake Free).
CDA 455 01-03-2009, 03:56 PM as much ammo as your second mortgage can stand.
Amen :lmao: !!
TNToy 01-03-2009, 06:41 PM Speer Gold Dot is probably the most proven/popular load among cops in this country that you'll find in most gun stores. Golden Saber is another popular choice.
I'd choose either of those over Hydrashok. Federal's HST and Winchester Ranger SXT are the best thing going if you believe in what the cops are using, and from the tests I've seen... But they've gotta be ordered off the interweb.
I typically recommend Gold Dot to locals who buy a first gun. Won't see it at WalMart, but I've never seen a gun store NOT stock it.
Expect to pay about $20 per box for the good hollowpoint stuff. And shoot 100 of whatever you pick through the gun, before you carry it. Some guns just don't get along with certain hollowpoints.
kwrangln 01-03-2009, 07:50 PM For plinking ammo, the best deals running right now are at walmart. Either Winchester White Box (100 round box runs about $19-20), or Blazer Brass (sold in 50 round boxes, about $9 each). I've shot both with success, no complaints about either. Used to shoot WWB exclusively, then did the math a bit closer, now I've been shooting BB almost exclusively. I stop by and pick up a couple boxes any time I'm around wallyworld, it builds up fairly quick in the safe that way with no huge outlay of cash all at once.

I can find them all day long in bullets only and loaded rounds on the internet.
TNToy 01-03-2009, 09:36 PM ...From places that 'should' be selling only to police. Same with Federal's HST. Win/Fed *discourage* selling this ammo to ciivies, but it's not technically illegal.
I bought 400 rounds of Federal HST in 147grain (9mm) earlier this week from Streichers, and that's a 'law enforcement use only' round, too.
kwrangln 01-03-2009, 09:43 PM Hmmmm, maybe I should see about getting some of these if my mil status will apply. Probably be even harder in the coming years, can't hurt to put some on the shelf now.
Off to look at ammo tests...
The Black Sheep 01-03-2009, 10:05 PM I see a shit ton on gunbroker, even old stock Black Talons. But you are gonna pay a premium on it because everybody that sees it think's its gold. There no fawking way i'm spending 60+ dollars on 20 rounds of .45acp.
Since some people seem to get it easily, post your sources so we can pick up a few boxes.
A camera so you can take pictures of yourself naked with it:D

Black Talon is a stupid purchase. As mentioned, you're paying a premium for the name. They've since redesigned it twice, and it's now known as Winchester Ranger T (SXT)... And one of the most popular law enforecement rounds in the country.
Federal's HST and Winchester Ranger T (not just the 'Ranger' you can buy locally - different stuff) have done the best, in every ammo test in every caliber, that I've seen.
You can order HST or Ranger here, although it'll probasbly be backordered:
www.streichers.com
www.mahsupplies.net
Streichers also had Gold Dot for about half the price I've seen locally, so if you like Speer's ammo, that might be worth a look.

No I understand that. I was just commenting that the only place I know where they are available to me are being way overpriced because some tacti-tool just sees the name Black Talon. The Ranger SXT's are in the same boat, rediculously overpriced.
broncman 01-04-2009, 03:23 PM Ammo, extra mags, and a mag loader, and LOT'S of range time!
Then more ammo, and more ammo.
I do not believe ammo will EVER go down!
Keep an envelope with a few bills in it for surprise deals. They do come along every so often and is a good time to stock up.
I just came across some 45 ACP Black Talon for $20 a box. I bought all I could afford.
SAVE ALL your brass as well. It can be reloaded in the future or used as baragaining chips for private purchases/trades etc.
PICS! we want pics!
Amanda G 01-10-2009, 02:11 PM Just picked it up. Sitting here at work doing something. Will unpack it shortly. :D
