How do you break in a front ring and pinion? Also why is it important to break in gear sets?

The break in process hardens the gears via the heating/cooling, and the pressure of driving.

That article you cited is in IMO the last word on gear break in. Randy has a whole bunch of other excellent articles on their web page.

Same as the rear if you have full time 4wd. But if you don't have it in 4 most of the time (read: enough to get the front end heated up), supposedly nothing. This is only hearsay, FWIW, but I read here that the brake in is to help the gears withstand the extreme heat that comes after being used for long periods of time at high speed.
All a break in really is, is a heat treatment. You drive 15 min at street speed, then let it cool completely, then repeat. After 500 miles, change the gear oil and you're good to go. If you really want to break in the front end, just do the same with 1 hub locked (in 2wd still).
