I have a 93 T100 and I need a new motor. It should cost about the same for a complete chevy 4x4 drive train and I would prefer to have a v8. I own a 91 Silverado already and enjoy its simplicity as a street truck.
Does the TBI of the older or the electronic transmission of newer years work better in offroad situations?
Thanks

I thought today was wednesday
Maybe I could have worded my question better.
Other than power are the vortec motors any better than TBI in off road situations? A person was telling me that TBI's wern't working well in some landcruisers.
Is the 4L60 better (more reliable) than the 700R4? I wouldn't mind a 5-speed, but I'm worried about the clutch pedal assembly. Is that very tough to swap in? Might I be able to use the OEM Toyota clutch pedal assembly?
Thanks

If your only goal is EFI, TBI works fine.
The only time a TBI doesn't work is when people can't wire worth a crap or are removing stuff they shouldn't. Ie clueless newbs who fawk something up then blame TBI for their issues.:shaking:
I'm partial to the Vortecs because of stock 300+hp which means reliable.

I have a vortec 350 in my Jimmy and have been on some pretty exrtreme angles and have not had any problem with it cutting out or anything. I would imagine the problems are install related. The 700r4 is a deasent trans if built correctly. It has a really low first gear. Someone else will have to chime in on the differences between the 700 and the 4l60e. I believe it is the newer version of the 700r4 but computerized.

It really depends on your budget! If your go cheap a 350/700r4 and TBI is the cheapest. Its the simplest EFI pretty easy.
If you up to it, a good swap would be a 5.3L/4l60. Its not bolt in but the prices are under $1000 for the motor with very low miles some I have seen for under $500 bucks. You'll spend more up front but if you drive a lot on the street it will get way better gas mileage.
As for the 700r4/4l60e basically the same save for the 60 is computer contorlled. It uses a PCM to actually shift the trans.
Ok thanks this is all basically what I expected, I just wanted to poke around before I get too serious about the whole thing.
I won't really be driving it all that much I have a Prelude that gets me most of where I want to go, but I'll keep the 5.3 advise in mind. I've heard the exact same thing several times.
Thanks again
