: Looking for advice!!!
DESERTMARAUDER 01-08-2009, 12:22 PM I am going to the hammers in february and it will be my first time there...was wondering if you guys who are experienced with the terrain there could inform me on the things that i will have to look out for..
My buggy is all tube and has a wheel base of about 116"
is riding on 37" boggers and has a 60 front and a 60 rear
rear is spooled. Have pretty good ground clearance under the belly and am making skid plates right now...buggy is pretty narrow only about 50 some odd inches wide or so.
Can lift the front tires 40" and the rears 50"...i have leafs all
the way around. Am getting thicker driveshafts too...anything else that i am forgetting that you guys can advise would be appreciated!!!

Steering. Beefy steering is a MUST.
After that, don't worry about it. The Hammers will find every weak link on your rig, almost immediately. You'll know after the first trip what works and what doesn't.
DESERTMARAUDER 01-08-2009, 02:46 PM Thanks for the great pick me up...lol...i am sure it is going to be rough...i do actually have a 2 1/2 hydraulic ram assist steering on it so i hope i will be fine. Is a winch mandatory at any point in there?

You should not wheel the Hammers without a winch. Seriously.
chvyhs 01-08-2009, 03:41 PM I wheeled the Hammers with out a winch for a couple of years. Just make sure one of your buddies have one.:D
When in Feb. are you heading out?
RCKRATZ 01-08-2009, 05:03 PM A gps or someone to show you around the place :D
Tinman 01-08-2009, 06:02 PM Make sure you bring lots of gas for the V-bombs!:D
Hammer Hog 01-08-2009, 08:32 PM I think he needs to see a photo of the old sign that used to be at the bottom of Sledge...before some punk stole it :shaking:
Anyone have a copy of it? ...Post it ...you know the one
Rock-Wear 01-08-2009, 10:20 PM rear is spooled
You have no front locker? Your not getting anywhere out there without one.
tjmark 01-09-2009, 07:25 AM I was doing hot laps up back door last weekend with no rear locker...
My personal opnion is to wheel with a group that knows the place and can help you out if needed.
So if his rig is built in other areas he will be ok and he can drive...:)

That is getting it.
I have done it once, and it was everything my car had.
As far as no front locker. It's ALOT harder than no rear locker, and it brings the suck, but its doable.
I've done just about every trail out there without a rear locker (gotta love ARB's ) but only a few with no front.

I could see that needing to pull yourself over things rather than push uphill..

That sucks. That sign was created by the late Paul "Fuzzy" Winters.:mad3:
Broke That 01-09-2009, 02:05 PM Does the Victor Valley group know about the plans to replace it, or will this be a suprise kinda' thing?

DESERTMARAUDER 01-09-2009, 04:31 PM Thank you to all for the advise...i guess if i have to i will spool the front till i can afford a better locker...i will be there the weekend of the king of the hammers event. From the 18th to the 22nd. Look forward to meeting anybody who decides to show up and associate. I am going with a group of buddies from washington and some more of there friends...i was told that we will have a group of 10 to 15 rigs so i am hoping between all of us we should be able to help one another...all of their rigs are built pretty good from what i am told...mine is the last one to be put together...again thanks again and anymore info on the topic would be helpfull!
David Taylor 01-09-2009, 05:02 PM i will be there the weekend of the king of the hammers event. From the 18th to the 22nd.
Might want to check that date again.
Hammer Hog 01-09-2009, 07:11 PM Thanks Jes,
That's the sign.
It's hard to believe the mentality that someone thinks it'd be cool to steel it for themselves...lowlife punks!
But I can see how cool it'd look on my shop wall all the same.
So lets sell copies for the cauze! I'd buy one...or two... :smokin:
Oh, and BTW...
Hope we didn't scare you too much there DESERTMARAUDER. Just thought you deserved an honest answer to your original question concerning your upcoming first trip to the Hammers, and what to expect.
And to add to that, I don't think I'd spool or weld the front. You'd likely bust something quick, plus you'll not be able to steer for crap. When I first started to wheel, I had a Detroit up front on one of my rigs and I hated it...but it'd be way better than full time locked. My other rig has ARBs front and rear, and believe it or not, I hardly have them locked until I absolutely need them, then there open. It's way easier to turn/control, and turns much sharper.
Our group will be doing recovery at KOH, so stop by and see us. We will also be doing the Taco Bar with Allied Wheels.

wilez5150 01-09-2009, 09:26 PM there is plans in the works to replace fuzzy's hammer sign. i helped fuzzy put it up in 96 and was heartbroke when i saw it missing. fuzzy passed away 2 years ago an the new sign will be his memorial if i can get the machinist off his tush to finish it.
wilez5150 01-09-2009, 09:29 PM i talked to a guy today who wants to print it on t shirts to sell for saving jv
DESERTMARAUDER 01-10-2009, 04:25 PM Thank you hammer hog...no it is going to take much more than words to scare me off...lol...i do appfreciate the honesty by the way!! I will have to stop by and see you guys there...again i am a nwby there so you will have to tell me what to look for as to where you guys will be...my rig is kinda easy to spot...all black with the pirate flag on the hood...i am sure i will catch shit from the guys from
'pirates of the rububicon" but i am not a poser of their club...got my own here in az. But anyway i guess my dates were wrong i will be there from the 25th to the 1st of march... So hope to grind some paint off with you guys on the trail.

That was me you talked to.
I'll be sending a picture of the original sign to see how it will look on a T-shirt.
I'll also try to get some FOJV shirts done prior to KOH.
