Your gonna take a locker out? Hmmm I like that little pup on 39.5 it look sweet. But why dont you work on the steering and chassis and a little more motor to get the speed? What gears you running? I realize it is a short ride and that will make it a little hard to get strait, but to get up a locker?
Train Horn 01-19-2009, 10:13 AM running 538 gears
i will admit im not really happy with loosing my locker , if it doesnt make much difference im NOT gonna be happy , but the guys swear by it !!

KEEP THE LOCKER! That thing is light so with 500hp it should be flying? BUT 538 on 39.5? Speed is about tire speed, take those out and run some 373 or 410? If you have the motor thats all it takes, as long as you have the tq and hp it works. I run 44 boggers with 456's and can hold 2nd at 6500. Although I am running a 700hp/700ftlbs 582. My truck also wieghs in at 7800 lbs! When you run that 538's you are running out of gear to fast.
I would bet you $100 if you have a good motor like you say that if you swapped some gears you would gain speed and in turn run a quicker time.
By the way those pits look short? How long are they?
Train Horn 01-19-2009, 09:42 PM thanks for you input !! we always like possitive input
makes sence ......but we are gonna stick with the 538 for now
if this doesnt work out the truck will be done totally different in the VERY near future !!
we will change the gears & 4 link it also
we run at a few tracks ........they range from 80ft to 250
Train Horn 01-19-2009, 09:51 PM one more thing ....its not as much gaining speed ...as it is not going straight
the truck has had a few near flips !!!!!!!!!
TLittle 01-20-2009, 01:39 PM Some of your problems are right here. Work out the steering instead of the locker! I bet it steers real good one way and not the other right? Looks like the shittttttttty old chevy steering on it right? Of course having those blocks in there not doing any good either! And it is pretty short wheelbase too. Believe me instead of loosing the money on the locker? You said you paid $400 and would sell for $200. Just work out that steering and then find someone that thinks they need 538's and get you some 410's or 373's hell you can prolly find some of those for free! since everyone thinks they need real deep gear sets.:shaking:
TLittle 01-20-2009, 01:39 PM Shit the phone rang and I forgot this pic!
hilbillypulling 01-20-2009, 04:18 PM BUT 538 on 39.5? Speed is about tire speed, take those out and run some 373 or 410? If you have the motor thats all it takes, as long as you have the tq and hp it works.
I disagree with this. The lower your gears are the less stress you have on the axle shafts (I would run even lower gears 6.17 or 6.37). To get wheel speed change the t-case gearing or tranny. If you can't afford a SCS or ProFab case, look at the 3 speed kit (that's if you running a toploader).

the blocks have been removed .....my old motor ( stock 350 ) i had headers coming out wheel wells and they rubbed my brand new 39.5's so that was a quick fix to get me to a event !! they r now gone !! and still hasnt made a lick of difference ...ahhhhh it piss's me off
thank you very much for the tips !!
also .........we run a 205 tranfer case and its 2-1 gear ratio
we get to second gear at 6300 rpms with the 538's
we took the locker out hoping to have less breakage & easier to steer
we run a spool in the rear so it will still be good , we may be able to hang 3rd without the locker now . its all a TEST & TUNE !!!!
if it breaks we already have a dana 60 for the front & a dana 70 for the rear !!

money isnt a issue , its tryin to make due with what we have
we have 2 other more immportant trucks to sink money into .......lol

and represent for the girls !!
hilbillypulling 01-20-2009, 06:22 PM I'm also not a big fan of spools. Let me change that, cheep spools. Deflection is a major problem with these. I think Eaton had a deflection bolt that worked to fix this problem, but corp 14FF & 70's don't have this option. The detroit is great but I think Randy's or Driveline has a open carrier spider gear replacement that works better than any spool

But that steering link pointing down to the ground is you handling problem, or lots of it. Work on that, maybe build some crossover with a hydro asst.? Keep up the good post!:smokin:

So that is your choice? But the lower gear get a weaker pinion! Also you must use the common sense rule here. If you run a 538 or 617/637 as you say how fast will it run down the road?
45mph? Run a higher gear and you can go faster right? of course you can that is as long as you got motor to turn it. So if you can go faster then that means more tire speed right?:shaking: I will put my 44's with 456's and my 582 up against your combo all day!
hilbillypulling 01-21-2009, 11:02 AM So that is your choice? But the lower gear get a weaker pinion!
At 6.17 and lower the pinion is not an issue. That's why I suggested running a lower gear
Also you must use the common sense rule here. If you run a 538 or 617/637 as you say how fast will it run down the road?
45mph?
Common sense would be to remember that her truck is perpose built for mud, not running down the road at 45mph
I will put my 44's with 456's and my 582 up against your combo all day!
Ok, I'll webwheel first with my little alky inj. 463, th400 in 3rd & 31" tires:
tranny 1.1 x case 1.25 x axle 6.17 = 8.483
RPM 8,500 / final 8.483 = 1002.00
1002.00 x 95 tire dia = 95190in.
95190 x 60 min/hr = 5711400in.
5711400in / 12 in.per ft. = 475950ft
475950 / 5280 ft per mile = 90.14 mph
I disagree with this. The lower your gears are the less stress you have on the axle shafts (I would run even lower gears 6.17 or 6.37). To get wheel speed change the t-case gearing or tranny. If you can't afford a SCS or ProFab case, look at the 3 speed kit (that's if you running a toploader).

The SCS & ProFab are illegal in some of our lower & mid-level classes. Just another thing to consider.

Lower gears are not going to help your axle shafts, as they are after the reduction, it may help with drive line u-joints, t-case out puts, ect,
But even that is only theory, & theory that I think could be proven wrong in some cases, if you have the power get your wheel speed up, 39.5 boggers I would shoot for 4.88:1 or 5.13:1,
I was running 5.13:1 with 44" tires, but I had plenty of power to work with.
hilbillypulling 01-21-2009, 12:59 PM Lower gears are not going to help your axle shafts, as they are after the reduction, it may help with drive line u-joints, t-case out puts, ect,
You are 100% correct with this statement, I was wrong. I had it backward.
But even that is only theory, & theory that I think could be proven wrong in some cases, if you have the power get your wheel speed up, 39.5 boggers I would shoot for 4.88:1 or 5.13:1, I was running 5.13:1 with 44" tires, but I had plenty of power to work with.
This theory has been proven time and time again in truck pulling. There is something about the 5.13 to 5.88 ratio that causes driveline failure. Outputs, joints and mostly pinions with 5.88's, it don't matter if its up front or out back.

skipped_Link 01-21-2009, 03:16 PM mostly pinions with 5.88's, it don't matter if its up front or out back.
2-cents
The pinion is getting pretty small with a 5.88 gear, could be part of the problem,
When hooked to a sled, & getting a good bite to the track it don't matter if its, 4.10 or 5.88, in a sense you are stopping the tires & inputting the same load to the D-lines & D-line u-joints, even though the lower gears makes it easier to spin the tires, if they are hooked good & not spinning then everything would see the same X number of ft lb of torque that the engine is putting out,
Mud racing, ( & even drag racing the 1/4 mile) is similar but mostly at the starting line with the launch.
It is hard for me to wrap my mind around this, & even harder to explain it.
hilbillypulling 01-21-2009, 03:53 PM The 5.8++ pinion on the R/W 103 rears break, but when changeing to the 6.17 pinion on the 106 the problem (almost) goes away. The gears heads are very close, but the shanks are very different. I don't know the differance between pinion size for the Dana 60 or 70.
After spelling out finals, engine rpm and wheel speed, my skull can't wrap around my brain.

i know you don't want to but what about some tractor meats? get some 16.1's and run the piss out of it.
Big91RustyBucket 06-01-2009, 07:47 AM How do you cut Boggers like that?
A company does them. They call them Jimmy Dean Cut Boggers. And they are nuts ;)
Train Horn 06-01-2009, 08:38 AM i know you don't want to but what about some tractor meats? get some 16.1's and run the piss out of it.
I agree
have been considering tractor tires , like 42in tall . can my 10 bolt handle them or then should i just change my shit out to the dana60 front dana 70 rear or just do it and see what happens .............lol trying to avoid major shit right now , and also my 39.5's are like new , never hit pavement for more than a second just to get off the trailer , so gotta part with those to help with cost , i try and keep mine low budget .....but that isn't cutting it either .
Jimmy deans is a company based in new york 716-652-9218 they are a bit pricey but worth every cent , if you really wanna get some hook going on:D
cj5 buggy 06-01-2009, 09:13 AM that 10 bolt won't last for a second with 16.1's. the only reason it's lasting now is that you can spin the boggers and such, the 16.1's wil hook up and it'll pop that 10 bolt every time.
Train Horn 06-01-2009, 09:45 AM 'i'm leaning towards these 11.2/24's ............but we have said 10bolt isn't gonna cut it !!!...........this will be after our mud drag truck is done , gonna start working on hooking me up , also getting rid of the leaf springs
To many options , open for ideas and suggestions
Thanks for your input :grinpimp:
Word is the old guy who cuts tires for Jimmy Dean Off-Road is sick of it & not planning to do it much longer. They come highly recommended, but if you can't get 'em to do your tires, try Scott Ohlrogge at www.racinginthedirt.com Some folks claim his cuts are even better than Dean's.

When we got ours about 7 months ago or so, the guy was out sick ( we were told @ time ) so it took like 3 months to get em , Thanks for the tip, we no a few people wanting a set in the future when money isn't so tight.

Out here, cut tires automatically put you in the open class; which is why I typically recommend saving your money and going straight to ags. Lets face it, any dot tire, even a bogger, can't touch an ag tire in the mud.
However, looking at the cut pattern of those, I can see how they'd grab even better than many ag patterns. Pretty damn pimp :smokin: Granted, I myself would stick with ag tires. I'd think the void in the front of the lug that creates that killer scoop would fill full of mud asap negating their advantage. They'd be sick in the sand, though.

I say try it and see. There is a lot of guys down here running Horseshoe trucks with anywhere between 6 and 9 hundred horse power on IFS fronts. There is a guy running 38" tractor tires on a complete 78 Ford with a D44 front (stock shafts I think) in the super mod class. not sure on the HP but it is a BB Ford with a 8-71 and nitrous.
Out here, cut tires automatically put you in the open class; which is why I typically recommend saving your money and going straight to ags. Lets face it, any dot tire, even a bogger, can't touch an ag tire in the mud.
For a lighter, faster machine, a quality cut like this will kill an ag tire as you'll wind up going OVER the mud instead of through it. But, it takes a TON of power to make them work properly. We also typically have more than 1 class that allows cuts. Sometimes it's a nitrous "truck" class, then a nitrous "rail" class, then a scoop tire class that allows blowers, and even a separate class for tractor tires. Granted, it's rare to find all 4 of those classes at one event, but 2 or 3 out of 4 is typically the norm. Even where it's all combined into 1 class, the guys on Ag tires are duking out for fastest loser while the 2,400lb rails on cuts or paddles are going for the win.

I can totally see that, with the lighter, high horse dedicated mud racers. Those suckers just skim the surface they move so quick. You guys are blessed out there with a much more active racing body/regulations. Out here the rules vary from track to track and they usually change year from year :shaking:

Train Horn 07-17-2009, 12:54 PM well im looking for a tractor r1 , don't no if they make a 46in tall 44 smallest???

send me some sizes and price , not sure about rims
PUP is 10 bolt now ( sucks ) so if anything we are gonna go dana60 front

We will be racing in Douglas Ga when race truck is done & Cobb
you could not even see my gas or brake pedal after that run it was buried!!
We got the wiring down pretty good now and sealed as best we can !
had to buy a new fuel pump , got it put on yesterday :D:D
my main problem is starters !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I go threw them all the time
right after that run , i was done ....my starter died and forgot extra one , we had just had tow rig detailed and all shit was gone :shaking:
we put a shield around starter area and it just held the mud in .
so back to the drawing board !!!!
we have one more trick , i will tell you how it works out " If it does "

3 truck team race
rabbit truck
2-1 tons pull a tire
The dozer came and parked right in front of our dually & the fence( for safety )....We thanked him for that , right away !!
The very first race as you will see he hit's the dozer head on @ full speed and moved it a few feet !!!!
Not sure what he was thinking at the time, but he didn't stop fast enough.
This could of been alot worse for alot of people if it wasn't for the dozer.
he's pretty fucked up broken bone's but in good spirits.

nvrsatisfied 09-14-2009, 10:14 AM 1. the exit of the track looks too short?
2. never park/stand at the end?
3. jackass flying threw the pit needs to learn how to drive.....
Glad you guys were not injured......casue this mud forum would crash also!
now get to working on your rigs :D
Train Horn 09-14-2009, 12:34 PM agree the shut down seems to short, the finish line is right where the mud ends.... that was addressed earlier in the day ,and the rest of the race went the other way after this incident, the shut down is only that way for this type of race. All others its the opposite.......And we race there ALOT with NO issue's.
I'm sure this will be changed now for good!!!!
We parked the dually there on purpose,It was parked so close to the fence the bumper was touching
people don't watch there damm kids, so we figured this would keep people back, you can replace a dually .........not a life.
We didn't sit there all day, till then........ guess it wasn't our time to go
Tommy has been driving along time with his dad . hes the last person the track officials would of thought to fuck up , he's got a busted hip and is in surgery ...........but he will be back !!!
Thanks
build coming soon , but not soon enough :D

dragoonranch 09-17-2009, 01:23 AM Did the center break out of that rim? I can't figure out what happened. It doesn't look like the center is still on the axle, or maybe it is and I just can't see it through the mud.
nvrsatisfied 09-17-2009, 12:34 PM been there done that....got to welding, drinking, welding, drinking weld, drinkkkiinnggg, pass out. head out the next day, forgot that you welded three rims instead of four...good times.... well now is a better excuse than ever to up grade.......
Train Horn 09-17-2009, 12:51 PM Yes the center broke off :D.....but stayed attached to the axle
But the rims were light weight aluminum rims,we put them on cause of a
few race's i was in , and just left them , they were to weak for my driving
style ...............lol
Like 5 guys said lets get the welder and fix it, and get you back out
as you can see that wasn't gonna happen , once i showed them the center.

Train Horn 10-01-2009, 02:06 PM I couldnt change the name of the truck, people would'nt like that much !! :D
My progress has slowed down, cant get my 2.5 front till this sunday,A guy was
supposed to have me one this last sunday, but it never went threw after waiting a week for it, so that set it back even more.
I'm a bit disapointed with that situation.
And i may sell the 11.2's and get 14.9's ......just get it over with.
they all know i will want more ................
Train Horn 10-07-2009, 11:07 AM Got a little change in plans on the set up for the pup :D
We are gonna go with the wish bone /reverse 4 link ..........what ever you all call it .
gonna stretch the front roughly to a 120 wheel base , its gonna be set up like a " Hill n hole " truck .
We will be making some NC & Georgia trips when the drag truck is done, So The pup can fit right in :D
The truck is gonna be set up for the future 14.9's ..........we are also debating on Air shocks, looking into how much they can take " ya no " ....lol...................FOA'S
How do you like the air ride shocks,to the guys that are running them ??
For now we are sticking with the 358 SBC ..........but if work picks up, steve is gonna beef that up also !!! ( new motor )

blazentrout 10-07-2009, 10:30 PM Got a little change in plans on the set up for the pup :D
We are gonna go with the wish bone /reverse 4 link ..........what ever you all call it .
Train,do you know any mini truckers? The reverse 4link is a popular term with themand install, but its not something i would want in a mud truck. the best way to describe it would be all 4 bars running from the back axle toward the back bumper area aka reversed of the normal way. it causes all sorts pinion angle issues.
cant wait to see how it comes together. Trout
Train Horn 10-08-2009, 05:44 PM Yes blazen my son is a mini trucker ( pic below ) he mentioned he wouldn't
do it either , but i have faith in my fabricator and he says its good .
I'll be sure to keep you posted on the out come, we know some that run that way and haven't had a issue that i know of .
Thanks for you input :D

blazentrout 10-09-2009, 06:17 AM cool, could you tell your son he has a nice looking truck, and ask him if he remembers seeing a purple right hand drive s10 blazer with cali grafics on it. i own/built the truck.

That's why, no diff locks (all axles are open on a terex). 6 wheel drive, diff locks, interaxle locks and even 33 / 33 / 33 weight distribution. I can walk this thru mud pushing over the front of the hood/grill area and keep moving loaded down.

Train Horn 11-06-2009, 07:36 PM Exhibition run gone bad
This was the first Pit bull truck
we are on our second body after this little oops.
We did the whole truck all over , and made it as safe a possible.
now our focus is speed :D
Stucco Steve luckily came out with a few gash's & a bruised ass bone, as the truck was climbing the tower, he leaned over in the seat & saved himself from serious injury!!
we learned the importance of a roll cage , wich was getting put in but not yet put in the truck at that time.
We are aware of the stupidness of it now !!!!
He hit a set of deep ruts and his tire's pulled him in.
the girl video tapping , was young and didn't comprehend what had just happened, she did real quick!!

Now I'm all for the skinny pedal but it seemed he never let out of it or hit the big fat wide one. Why not let out? Maybe a kill switch next time?
Train Horn 11-07-2009, 08:42 AM letting off wouldn't have made a difference, The truck wouldn't have stopped in time !!!
he landed in "deep" Rutts that you cant see when that high up or even in the video, .......... and it happened so fast...as it usually does.
If he would of moved over more to the right at launch, it would of been smooth sailing.
Kill switch ...........I don't no who would flip that switch , its not over

You have a good point, ... I have a rag top and a roll cage, all our trucks do.....
ive seen "alot" of rolls and everyone came out good with the standard roll cage!!
If you properly wear your harness that helps alot also.
Thank you
