did any travelalls come with hydraulic steering?
what engines/tranny/xfercase combos came in them?

the reason i ask is i am looking at a 59 dodge truck that is for sale
the owner said it has the drivetrain from a travelall
the transfer case has a single lever shifter and the tranny is a 5spd if you count the ultra low gear
he said it has a 346 cu in engine or something close to that
i drove it and it drives good but it needs the front axle seals replaced
it has 35s or 36s
it is going for 2500$ obo
does this sound like a good deal?

thanks for any help

hydraulic steering= power steering?
T-alls came with power steering but not hydro

It's a 345 and the t-case is a 205.

Could also be a 202 transfer case.

The 5 speed is a t-30 series, probably 34,35,or 36.

If you shifted all the way through the gears and didn't have a problem, its not a t-34 (odd OD shift pattern)

The 35 and 36 are direct drive, the 35 has a lower low. 7.12?? to 6.32??

the shift pattern was:
L 1 3
R 2 4

i didnt check the xfer case
can someone give me the shift pattern on it?

where can i find a pic of a stock T-All steering set up
i have looked for info on them but i havent found anything usefull

Late 50's early 60's 4x4 IH trucks and Travelalls had hydro assit steering like some 70's fords.

there was no tie rods
there was a small hydraulic ram(i think)
the ram was about 12inches
i could be totally wrong but i have never seen a steering setup like this

edit, my friend, EDIT!!

Also, its a t-35 or 36.

I'm still not visualizing the steering set up you are talking about.

I've seen that set up on an early ('60's), 1-ton. Small ram on the passenger side, kind of weird looking, but I guess it works good.

Basicaly a manual type box with an "auxilery" power assist. Kind of looks like an add-on, but I guess its factory (or "dealer option").

Unfortunatly, thats about all I know about them.

if its a t-36... I'll trade you a t-34 (OD)

:D

the ram is a hydrolic asist (very strong setup)
they switched to the swagensaw setup in 68
the x-fercase is a 202, same reatio as the 205 but a bit stronger and most likly is dorvorced.

If is has a factory front axel it is a 44 closed knuckle big or small ball or if it was from a 1 ton travelall (yes they were made in the 60s, well at least in canada) it would be a dana 70

no problem

divorced is whene the x-fercase is sepret from the tranny and a small drive shaft comes from the tranny and goes into the x-fercase

I would say the steering setup is a good one if in good shape, its a very strong setup big rigs had (maybe still do) this setup as well but only bigger

if its the 202 it would be

2H
4H
N
4L

Depends on a number of factors... With the drivetrain swap, I'd say its worth less, unless the parts are in great condition. What kind of condition is the rest of the truck in? And most importantly, how bad do you want it? ;)

i drove it the other day and it drives great
the steering is kinda loose
and the front axle seals leak a little
it kind stutters in first a little but i think i could fix that by rebuilding the throttle linkages and cables
i want it to be as responsive as possible
when the guy started it it fired right up

the truck is in ok shape
its primer gray right now and i knocked on the body panels and it sounded like steel all around
its SOA and its got 33s or 35s
it looks awesome
i am going to talk to him today and i will post some pics as soon as possible

i figured i could offer the guy 2100 cash and see what happens

edit:
i talked to him today
he went down to 1900$
so i got 600$ to put in it
the engine/tranny/Xfer case is out of a 68 travelall
what are the typical problems with the drivetrain?
