: s-10 steering box?
RedTJ1997 08-19-2002, 03:07 PM hello, I am new to this board. I was sent here by some friends of mine in hopes that someone on here can help me out a bit. I am in need of a new steering box for my TJ. I have done some searches on some other sites, but no one has been able to tell me for sure that a late 80's steering box will have all the features I want. I am looking at the agr variable gear box, and super pump. supposidly this s-10 box has all the same features; variable turning ratio, better seals, and a stronger housing. Can any one varify this one way or the other? and if it does work, can any one give me somequick tips? tahnks for your help.
Todd
TheLakeRat 08-19-2002, 06:14 PM The S-10 box is a direct swap in upgrade as long as you stay in the 80's. But it is still a small piston Saginaw with better seals.
If you are wanting more power like an AGR box then you need a Fullsize Jeep J20 pickup box. Just look up the listing to see what the last year was you could get them and get that one and you should be able to just bolt it up. It will have 4 mounting holes so you will only use 3 of them.
i have a tj box if you need one .so matt a j10 is the box to get not a s-10?any year of a j-10...

He typed J20 and as far as year, the last year of the J20. ;)
RedTJ1997 08-19-2002, 07:35 PM ok I get what you are saying. how much better will the j20 box give me over a agr? is it worth the effort? or should I just break down and buy an agr? if I go with the j20, then should I end up going with the super pump for extra flow? sorry about the questions, but I want to make sure I've got a good hold on what I am doing and to make sure it is worth trying to do something cheaper then it can be bought. thanks for all the info guys.

66CJdean 08-19-2002, 07:46 PM You will be lucky if the AGR stuff you buy works the first time around so stick with OEM products in this case. The S-10 box did a fine job of turning 35's on my Jeep but I don't know of any that have the variable ratio but I never looked into that. To me the variable ratio is way over rated because how often to you need to go from lock to lock? The variable also add an extra load on the box but mostly the pump because it has to ram enough fluid in the box to keep up with the faster ratio. If you want a good pump then just buy a pump for an 80-83 Chevy suburban with the 6.2 diesel and hyroboost.
RedTJ1997 08-20-2002, 09:20 AM so say an s-10 box out of an 87 blazer or truck will work? also what is so special about that pump? flow rate would be my guess. anyway is it worth the effort to replace my original box with a s-10 box? I have also heard that a YJ box is a little more beefy, and may also be worth the upgrade? I am just trying to figure out what is rumor and what is fact. can I get some information on AGR system that didn't work and why? thanks for all the help.
Todd
P.S. I know a bunch of people in W/S. how much do you want for that stock box?
ah i dont dont know dude i just want enough to get a scrap box at a local yard for my jeep say 75$ let me know dude....
RedTJ1997 08-20-2002, 06:36 PM hi shawn, I didn't recogize you. This is todd from chapel hill, we chatted a while ago about lifts and stuff. anyway, I'm still investigating so I'll let you know sooner or later. thanks man.

TheLakeRat 08-20-2002, 08:17 PM CJdean, next time your in Texas i'm gonna buy you a beer:D
Next you need a J20 box not a J10 box. the J10 is the same as a CJ box.
A J20 will be exactly the same thing as what AGR will sell as a super box. But i guess if you really want that A$$ raping then go ahead. Same goes for the pump. Just get what CJdean listed and you will be fine.
And lastly a YJ box and a S-10 box are almost identicle. The only difference is the mounting holes. a YJ has 4 and the s-10 will have 3 just like the TJ.
Now that that's straight. the ONLY reason that you would want to replace your TJ box with a YJ or S-10 is because they have a better lower seal design that the TJ. they arent any stronger just less likely to leak with use of large tires.
RedTJ1997 08-21-2002, 03:44 AM ok great I've got this now. I just have one mroe queestion I thought of after I logged off last night. is that pump out of the desiel going to be a direct swap? any drilling? pulley swap? bracket making? required. I am guessing I will have to custom up some lines for it, no biggie. now I can start checking prices on a j20 steering box. thanks guys, you have been more help than anyone else on any of the jeep post boards I have been on. I'm hooked now.
Todd
P.S. shawn I'll try to call you about 5:30 this evening.
How do these steering boxes compare to those supplied in CJ's. I saw in one post that the J10 box is same as a CJ box. Is that good or bad? How does the CJ box compare to the YJ box? I presume the J20 box would swap into a CJ as well. Problem for me is there aren't many J20's in the yard. I was there on Monday, saw one CJ, many XJ's, a few older Cherokee Chiefs I believe. Of course, lots of Chevy/Ford/Dodges to choose from.
Thanks,
Chris
