Ok so my friend is going to move to alaska and he is going to buy a new truck(he got a new job). he is going to buy a dodge diesel but we are worried about the fuel gelling up on the cold weather that they have up there, should we be conserned with that or will the block heater preheat the fuel enough so that this will not even be a problem?

The additive is important! I live in Norway for a few years, and part of my stay was 200 miles above the artic circle. You should not have too much problem if you use the right fuel and the anti gel additives. Dodge had great engine heaters that also work well in the cold. The dipstick oil heaters also work alright to help keep your engine warm, but the pull a ton of electricity. Hope you are not worried about your electric bill.....:D

Tell your buddy not to worry about the fuel gelling. All the fuel you can buy in AK in the winter is a blend of #1 and #2. Some of the better stations (the ones that sell to truckers) have the temp that the fuel is safe to (typically -70) on the pump. If he does happen across one of the few stations that sells straight #2 (I know of only 1 station) there will be a big sign on the pump that says "Don't use this fuel unless you have a heated tank".

The one other thing your buddy might want to do is to run a good fuel additive. There are many to choose from but almost any of them will help with the lubricity problems the fuel in AK has year round. This along with changing to synthetic lube in the diffs/transfer case and maybe engine is all he needs to do.

Tell your buddy to go to www.turbodieselregister.com and have a look at the forums. Everything he needs to know is there.

One other note, if he is moving to the Anchorage area tell him to email me, I am the ring leader of a group of Dodge Diesel owners in the area (Alaska Diesel BOMBERS) and we are always looking for new members.
