Just picked up this 'new' pistol from a disgruntled PO. The story is that he took it to a gun smith to have 'tuned' and its been jamming and running like crap ever since. I tried to put a mag through it and it stove piped 2 times! After disassembling it, I found a chopped recoil spring. I 'think' the spring is so weak that its not allowing the stiff ass extractor claw to completely grab the spent shell therefore not allowing the slide to close all the way. Or the extractor is really too stiff causing the problem.

So before I go and order some new recoil springs, are there any 'real' gain from using heavier springs in a 1911 style pistol? I had one bad experience with one several years ago and swore them off... But the price was criminal:grinpimp:

I would think the spring would help, but can't answer for sure.
I would also wonder if the gunsmith had any idea of what he was doing, and messed something up. Why didn't the PO have the gunsmith make it right?

Any groves on the barrel ramp, causing the shell to grab and stick?

No grooves. The thing is like new with night sights and all.

The guy that had the shop conveniently closed shortly after doing the job.

Its got a 'trigger' installed and it works perfectly. It looks like all the contact areas have been polished. Someone told me to check the 'fingers' for a booger welds, but it looks 'ok'.

Pics tomorrow-ish.

My P14-45 has had 1 jam. Stock everything except grips. I have run a few factory loads and a bunch of hand loads. I have mix and matched ammo in the same mag. This thing runs everything clean or dirty, ball, FMJ, hollow points.

Great gun. I've actually had two. Sold my first one to a buddy, then replaced it before the 10 round mag limit law went through.

Sorry I can't comment on the .40 though. Now if you want to talk Sig .40, all of the above it true for my Sig P229 as well both .40 and sig .357

I have had a few double feeds on my P-12. but thats what "tap, rack, bang" drills are for.

If you can clear it with a tap-rack, then it's not a double feed.

No but the drill does. Because next in line is strip the mag. They just don't call it tap rack maybe strip the mag, insert new mag and rack again bang drill.

IMHO , without knowing exactly what was done to the weapon by the "gunsmith" it would probably be a good move to return the weapon to as close to factory as possible, ie recoil and firing pin springs.
