This project was done in 16 months by myself and 2 others on occasion all funded by the owner .

77 cj7 frame.
82 front/rear axels.
77 304 out of cj5.
77 t18 tranny.
77 transfer case.
spring over axel lift.
shackle reversal kit.
2" lift shackels.
custom tranny crossmember.
fiberglass body from 4wheel drive hardware.
mickey thompson aluminum wheels.
36" ground hawg tires.
lock rite lockers front and rear .
Currently it has been sitting for the last 3 months with a broken front axel and he is convinced he wants to go with Dana 60's ,can the factory axels be beefed up enough for casual 4 wheeling ? Or are 60's the only way to go ? Rockwells ? Just need to get a good direction before he starts spending money on stuff he doesnt need.
Thanks for any help.

Nice Jeep.Should be in the Non-Hardcore section though. You should be fine with a set of Dana 44s if hes not going any bigger on the tires. If hes gonna go bigger eventually then just swap in 60s.I have a Dodge 60 foe a resonable price in Northeast Pa if hes interested.

Well any axle worth installing is going to be wider than stock. Also going to have a different bolt pattern.Which will require different wheels. You can get the wheels with more or less backspacing.Alittle extra flare width and youll still be street legal.

Grand Wagoneer Dana 44 front and Rear is the best setup to go

you can get them at the junk yard for basically next to nothing, and they can be beefed up

They went to drivers drop in the 80s I believe so make sure its a passengers drop. Some had an AMC 20 in the rear. They are also a good axle. They are not like the CJ AMC 20.They come stock with 1 piece shafts and thicker tubes I believe.

Looking around the local yards I have learned that about the drop difference on the amc's and now I find myslef looking under every jeep I see lol. What axels came in the old International scouts ? Are they tougher than the jeep axels ?

Yeah but the front doesnt have enough caster in it.You will need to grind the Ineer "C"s and rotate them. The rear is a good swap. For the front you would be better off getting a Waggy 44 and cutting 4"s off the long side.I believe there is a stock shaft that will fit but dont remember which one it is.

I assume you have 1 piece axles in the rear 20?I personally would just stick a stock shaft in the front and drive it till you have the axle ready to swap in.Theres no real bolt in application.Whatever you do is gonna require some work so if you find a good deal on a 60 mite aswell do it.It will require the same work.

Before you go any further, what exactly broke on the axle?

The shaft tragically commited suicide because it couldn't take being that close to a Z bent draglink any longer.
